At a press conferance today in Japan, Square Enix announced (among other things) remakes of Star Ocean (http://psp.ign.com/articles/787/787042p1.html) (originally on the Super Famicom) and Star Ocean : The 2nd Story (http://psp.ign.com/articles/787/787043p1.html) (originally on the PS1), both for the PSP. The remakes will be subtitled First Launch and Second Evlolution respectively.

From IGN on SO1 :
First Departure is a refurbished version of the very first Star Ocean, complete with 3D graphics and CG cutscenes, not unlike the retelling of Final Fantasy III that was released on the Nintendo DS last year. Although no actual gameplay footage was shown, the screenshots we have here give a glimpse of what to expect.

Both should feature updated graphics and additional content. No release date has been given yet, but we should be hearing more this coming weekend at the Square Enix Party 2007.

This is damn nice to see. The original Star Ocean never made it out over in North America, so this is a remake that is actually a very welcome surprise. That scratches off one SE game we need to get over here, now how about Seiken Densetsu 3 and Bahamut Lagoon?

Man I loved the Star Ocean original PS1 game. I never picked up the second one for some reason, but I might pick it up again for the PSP for some rpg goodness.

2nd Story was pretty amazing on the PS1. I believe it's also the one they pitched to have somewhere near 82 different endings (If memory serves). Also a very fun real-time battle system similar to the one from FFXII. Methinks I won't trade in my PSP just yet...

Yeah, SO2 had a shitload of endings, depending on what characters you had in your party in different combinations and what choices you made at certain parts of the story. And, yeah, the battle system in SO2 rocked, though I don't recall it being much like FFXII. You could move yourself around a lot.

Haha 82 different endings? Reminds me of the Chrono Trigger days...although I don't think it was quite that elaborate...

God that was over 10 years ago.

Never played either of these games originally (I was a PC gamer at the time), but I would LOVE to check 'em out on the PSP! This is good news.
