DailyTech reports on a study they've completed about the enhanced visual quality (http://dailytech.com/Xbox+360+Spring+Update+Improves+VGA+Image+Quality/article7216.htm) the Xbox 360 Spring Update provides to VGA users, increasing contrast and making black really black. Be sure to click on the image in the full article (http://dailytech.com/Xbox+360+Spring+Update+Improves+VGA+Image+Quality/article7216.htm) to see the high-rez version.
While the increased richness and color in Need for Speed Carbon is noticeable, the more appreciable difference of the new IRE settings comes when watching movies. In all parts of King Kong, but especially the dark scenes where accurate black levels are essential, the new “expanded” reference level produced images that were far richer and less washed out, providing a significantly improved picture.
Turn Ons: A good popping contrast ratio
Turn Offs: washed out images

It looks a bit better. No need for HDMI if your TV has a VGA input.

Hooray for me and all other VGA users!
Anyone else using their Xbox on a PC monitor? I got a nice 22 inch widescreen for Xmas and since we lack an HDTV, it is a much nicer choice than the ol' SD.

Awesome! I'm using VGA, but then again I never noticed a problem with the colors or black levels.

I am using a 19" CRT set to 720p as many games do not have their settings for 1280x1024 done right at all.

I never noticed a problem on my monitor, but I'll be sure to check this out.

Sorry Disgustipated. I didn't see your news submission in the listing. Had I seen it, i would have probably approved it, even IF it didn't have a sweet little photobucket image.

It's ok, Bap told me that you couldn't see the submission so it's a case of coincidence and miscommunication.
I have to go steal boxes now.

So this means I'll be pretty much holding a candle in a cave when playing Gears on Bullet Marsh. :p
The VGA update is nice, better blacks and 1920x1080 works for me now.

Anyone know what benefits of using the VGA vs Component on a plasma might be? Or would the differences boil down to the particular TV?

Hmmm... I'll have to check with bap to make sure you can see submissions.

Or would the differences boil down to the particular TV?VGA will upsample DVDs, and will provide more specific output resolutions to pick from. Beyond that, you'd have to look into what your TV supports over each connection type.

The difference between VGA output before and after the update on my 32 inch Samsung LCD is night and day. Blacks look black (used to look dark gray) and colors are much more vibrant. I'm using the "Extended" setting.

The Picture is definitely great... but, I am saddened to see the continued lack of 16:10 Support...

I have always used VGA over component due to sharper looking pictures on my Westy. I was somewhat disappointed over the washed out look but lived with it for the sharp picture. Now I can have both! Thanks MS!

It'll depend on the TV, primarily what resolutions it supports. If it is an old SD plasma, VGA output isn't going to buy you much.

My TV has a VGA input (And my computer is hooked up to it through that) but, for some damned reason, it supports some screw resolution. I know I can't play the vast majority of my h.264 videos over it. Bleh. The TV supports up to 1080i. But the 720p setting for my 360... I dunno, looks nicer for some reason.

That is because progressive is superior, and runs at I higher frame rate, increased resolution be damned.

Kick ass. I was wondering what was going on. I first noticed it today while playing Splinter Cell:Double Agent, I thought it was some setting my kid fooled with on my LCD but when I switch over the my CRT the output was as good. In any case it's damn pretty...thank you Uncle Bill.

I use VGA, so this might prove to be more awesome than I expected!

This is fantastic...when I switched from component to VGA I noticed a huge difference and was almost tempted to go back to component and forfit 1080p support.
But now it sounds like the problem has been addressed!

I just tried this and there is a huge color difference. The colors are significantly brighter. I haven't tried it with a movie yet, but I would imagine it will make things look a ton better than they were.
Where did I leave my Dawn of the Dead DVD?

Awesome, I too have thought that the images were much better and just needed someone to agree with me.
Thanx MS, now support 16:10 will ya.

Amazing. This is officially the best Live update ever for me. So far, the BC titles look like complete ass on the 360, so I still play them on my little 15" TV on my Crystal or Halo Xbox 1.

Maybe it's me, but I think my VGA looks better than my HDMI. Does anyone feel similar or are my eyes failing me at the age of 25? :)

I tried this out last night and find it to be excellent. The images really pop off the screen now. Didn't realize it was so bad before.
Best system update ever!

Ya know, I was reading what they had to do to improve VGA outputs (basically adjust what is considered to be the colour black) and it all sounds so... simple. Like something they should have picked up ages ago.
Is it just me? is changing your baseline black colour much more difficult than that? Would it be a very difficult problem to identify?

Since I had my system ISF calibrated, I'm not sure what benefit this would have. Plus, that screenshot of the expanded config looks too dark, like details are lost in the darkness.
