From Go Nintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=17484) :
Seems like Square-Enix can’t keep anything a secret for their upcoming party! Rumor has it that Square-Enix will be giving Final Fantasy IV the 3d makeover treatment to appear on the DS. The team working on the game is the same team that handled the 3d remake of Final Fantasy III. Of course, Square-Enix has no comment, and most likely won’t confirm anything until their party...

I really hope not. Do a 2D remake, fine, but we don't need a 3D remake of FFIV.
EDIT : I'd take a 3D remake on a system that could handle 3D better, like if they made it for the PSP, PSN, XBLA, or the VC. But the DS? That's just not a great system for 3D games. If they want to do it on the DS, I'd just much rather see that they stick to 2D. And take better advantage of the DS's features this time.

I take it that you haven't seen any of Square-Enix's 3D outings on the DS? They are the best looking games on the system, and all of the ones I've played are great.

I have, and while they're decent, 3D is not what the DS is best suited for. I'd prefer my DS games stick to being 2D. That's my personal preferance though, I'm not trying to say that's the way it needs to be.

Personally, I think that FFIII DS is the sort of thing I should be looking at when I'm playing on my DS. It was stylistically awesome, even with the DS' limited 3D capabilities.
But I want FFVI, fuck this IV shit!

While I will concede your point that the DS is far more suited as a 2d game system, if only because I prefer handheld games in a 2d format, the DS is perfectly adequate as a 3D system. My only other option in terms of portables is a psp, and it has fuck all in the way of games that interest me as far as portable entertainment is concerned. Adding to that, I rarely play portable games and only tend to do so if I'm out and I've got the thing in the glove box or in my bag. I can't imagine carrying around two expensive little devices that I barely use just to get a bit of 3d gaming on when I'm in the mood. So while the DS's 3D functions aren't the best, they're more than serviceable for someone who only plays 1 out of 3 games in 3D.

I have officially lost count of the remakes of all the stupid FF titles. Between the originals, re-issues, re-makes, and the new ones, I just can't keep up.
I guess not caring might have something to do with it ...

Bah, fuck that. FF IV is my personal favourite, and it totally deserves this remake treatment. Besides, you KNOW they'll do VI eventually, so sit down and shut up. ;)

I haven't played a final fantasy game since 5. Or whatever the one with the terra girl was called. It was on the snes. Actually I've played ff tactics on the game boy but that doesn't really count does it?
[Edit] Actually that's not true either, I played one of the ps2 games at a friend's place. It was the one with the poncey little shit with the sports in the floating arena.
That game made me very angry with the japanese people for a while. I got over the rage, now it's more simmering resentment.

Now that I could totally get behind. I'd prefer FFV though, but I know I'm mostly alone with that being my personal favorite.

Here's my question: Did the graphics convey a visual representation of concepts in game that would otherwise be left to the users imagination? Did they convey emotion and personality?
I was a little turned off by them at first also, but then I realized that they accomplish every storytelling aspect that graphics are supposed to cover.
OMG is people actually paying for remakes theese days?! Man if that is true then why bother doing something new at all?! I mean SE could make remakes for like forever considering how many gazillion FF games there is out there. Seriously... pay for remakes?!

Okay, the FF games are very good, especially the earlier ones (IMO), but my god, can Squeenix beat the cash cow any more here? How many times have they released remakes of their old games for full price, and people keep eating them up?

Squeenix isn't the same since the merger. Prior to becoming Squeenix, each Final Fantasy title was unique. Since the Enix merger, they have turned the whole place into a dairy farm with all that milking.

I'll agree that the FF 1 & 2 remakes are excessive, and Dirge of Cerberus needs to be forgotten, but if you look at the games that have come out, they've been quality games. Revenant Wings for the DS is getting good reviews, Crisis Core for the PSP looks damn good, and the FFXIII project has some good potential. I'll agree though, since the Enix merger, the orignal IPs have all but gone away, which is a shame.
Also, this has been confirmed, it's not a rumor anymore.

"Look and feel"-wise. IMO.
Final Fantasy 1 re-draw on PSP >>>>>> FF3 3d re-make on DS.
Yes, it's the same damn game, but I'll be damned if it doesn't have some of the best 2d on a hand-held ever.

Okay since no one has yet...
Of all the FF games, 8 is my least liked. It felt like it was going to drag on forever. Here here for either 4 or 6... Hell, I'd like both please and in that order. :D

I can't believe I'm going to be playing this game AGAIN after getting to level 99 in the GBA version...but what can I say, I'm a Final Fantasy bitch.

Final Fantasy IV is one of my favorite games of all time, and though I've held off on getting the GBA version, I may jump on this one.
Can't they make ORIGINAL games anymore? They JUST did a remake of FF4 for gba, which will play just fine in the DS. 3D is nice, but I would much rather see a _new_ game in 3D than old IP.

They have 2 new games coming, FFXII Revenant Wings and DragonQuest IX. I think a 3D remake of FFIV will be great. FFIV was one of the best RPGs on the SNES and is astoundingly better than FFIII.

That wasn't a remake, it was a port with some extra content. Not that I'm trying to justify this, there are people that have already bought this game 3 times already, we really don't need another. I like the idea that someone said earlier about a 2D remake of VIII (VII or IX would work well too).

Furthermore, the blog notes that the game is near completion which sort of backs up the author’s claim about it being unveiled at the Square-Enix party.
Better article, better info.

So this will be what, the third time I'm going to purchase this game?
I'm glad that they chose to go with the Final Fantasy III DS engine with this one. I always liked the classic look of Final Fantasy before its transition into the art style that the series currently sports. The scans look positively wonderful.
I hope that Square Enix follows this trend for Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI (I would gladly pay a hundred dollars for VI). I've got Final Fantasy IV/V/VI Advance, as these are my favorites of the series, and while I usually look down upon rehashes, quality remakes seem to be where my milk recepticle/teat (whichever makes more sense) is at.

Getting on my soapbox here....
There's a reason that S-E is doing all these remakes. And it's a bit more than money. It's quite simple. They don't want the stories/games to die. Now, I think this might be a bit overkill. (I think a 2d version of the PS1 FF games would be more interesting, to be honest), I'm a IV fanboy. It's my second favorite of the series. So this excites me.
And that's what they're counting on. Besides, they're doing some different and interesting stuff with the other various DS remakes. Just because they're in familar locales doesn't mean that they have nothing new to offer.

Wow, I really don't like the look of the Dark Knight... can he really stand on those legs without them breaking in half?

This is one of my favorites, but since I never actually completed the GBA version, I don't think I'll get this when it comes around to the US. Unless they add a ton of new content, also if they're smart they'll include a selectable difficulty option.

Speaking as someone who never owned a SNES (I was getting drunk and playing PC/Genesis during that period) and did not play any of the pre-VII games before the DS version of III came out, I'm loving this news. Maybe I'll start getting irritable like so many of y'all once they start doing remakes of VIII through X (I think a high-definition remake of VII would be welcome to 90+% of the Square fanbase), but until then I'm pleased that I get to play these older games in a "nicer" form - with a few exceptions, and RPGs aren't nicluded, I prefer good 3D to good 2D.

These lazy asses need to get off their rumps and pump out a remake to FFXII! Am I right?

Eh, I'd only be upset if Square was doing this in lieu of new DS games. We're still getting A2, Revenant Wings, Dragon Quest, Wonderful World, etc etc etc.
It is a little baffling that this happens so soon after the GBA re-release, but I didn't actually buy those (SUCKERS), but eh. This is, in the end, is awesome, even if his little legs are kinda goofy. :p

I rather it stay 2-d with 3-d backgrounds and some tweaks to the ATB system, but no 3-d engine please.
