Siliconera takes a look at a new strategy RPG in development for the Nintendo DS, Rondo of Deception (http://www.siliconera.com/index.php/2007/05/08/success-corps-srpg-rondo-of-deception/). The fantasy-themed title has armchair strategists drawing battle plans with the stylus to control units. Expected to launch in Japan this Summer, Famitsu.com is also hosting additional screen shots and character artwork (http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/2007/04/21/104,1177143245,70628,0,0.html), including the obligatory anthro temptress (http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/2007/04/21/h-104_70628_ituwari039.jpg.jpg).http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa55/goodavatar/104_70628_hon037.jpg (http://www.siliconera.com/index.php/2007/05/08/success-corps-srpg-rondo-of-deception)Instead of moving your characters on a grid you draw a path for each character to move with the stylus. If your character walks into an allied unit he/she will heal or boost them. However, if you run into an enemy unit an animated battle begins. While some of your units are actively participating in battle other units in your army can be assigned to raise war funds and train to increase their strength. It sounds like the title brings a lot of interesting ideas to the genre. Lets hope they turn out being fantastic.

I saw this earlier and it looks very interesting. It's still a little ways off in Japan yet, so a US release is still a total unknown at this point. It'ts developed by Success Corp, who did Touch Detective and Izuna, so not exactly a dev with a great history, but it could still be good.

That's a really cool game dynamic with the stylus. I wish the art wasn't so cliche and boring, but I want to play it anyway. Conventional art doesn't always predict a conventional story.

I thought this had something to do with Rondo of Blood...just what the hell does Rondo mean anyway?

From Dictionary.com :
Rondo - A musical composition built on the alternation of a principal recurring theme and contrasting episodes.

I've always thought that turn based strategy games are among the few applications that are well suited for handhelds. I've always had difficulty finding many handheld games that really interested me. However, games like Advance Wars, FF Tactics, and Fire Emblem can keep me occupied for hours. I'm actually surprised that the DS hasn't seen more games like this already.

The game seems interesting but this art style has me cringing. I guess I just need to remember this is the DS.

Rondo? Wasn't that a cheezy '70s era "manly" soda? Come to think of it, with the whole energy drink craze these days maybe it was ahead of its time!

Strategy JRPG = my hopes up
I hope we see this over in the west.

Seconded, looks interesting but why the hell is it always kids in a smushed cartoony style. ARGH.
No matter how bad it is, its gotta be better then that festerting pile of shit that was MageKnight.

From what they mention with the stylus, you use that to move your units instead of the d-pad.
I'll keep an eye on this anyway.

Was Mage Knight all that bad? I just got outbid for that on eBay a few days ago for $5.

I LOVE using the stylus to plan attack routes - AKA Star Fox Command.

Geeze, the character sprite on top isn't that bad, but the bottom screen style just looks so... RPG-Maker-esque. If they even so much as improved the sprites I think it'd look WORLDS better.
Still gonna watch it none the less, but it's gonna have some VERY heavy strategic RPG competion.

It was terrible, absolutely terrible, simply put one of the worst games I have ever bought. Not only was it horrifically boring and convoluted, it was downright broken in some cases, where you simply could not complete objectives in the time allowed. It was a horrible horrible game, I would perhaps give it a 1/10.

Isn't Mage-Knight a light tabletop strategy game?

Yep, it is, but they made it into an apparently terrible DS game.
Thanks Serapth for that, btw, I've been looking for DS games, and that looked like a decent time killer.

It IS a killer of time, but also sanity. I wouldn't recommend it.

The games sounds very cool. It's giving me Fire Emblem vibes, which is a damn good thing. If nothing else, the title is cool.

Not a great history, and I know I'm in the (significant) minority, but I enjoyed Touch Detective. I just wouldn't recommend it.

I have a feeling this game will look better in motion. Are there trailers up?
FFTDS might have some competition - or an opening act.
