View Full Version : Playstation 4 in 2008? Not Likely

Last week (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29271) outgoing Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi claimed that he was already working on the Playstation 4 (as well as the PS5 and the PS6). Now comes Australian magazine Smarthouse (http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Media_Centres/Industry/R8W6V6L6) which spoke to a supposed Sony insider, who seemingly dropped some bombshells.
A new Playstation 4 could be less than 18 months away according to a Sony insider. The device will include the same chipset as the current PS3 but where it will differ from the current model is in the drive bay and in the attachment area. It will also include an extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source.

In addition Sony is working on improving the output experience so that the device can become a true home entertainment centre eliminating the need for a media centre. "We have even looked at a Sony home server based on Playstation technology. This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library" said one Sony source. So instead of the PS3 having a 10 year lifespan it looks like it may be closer to 10 months, right?

Not exactly. Clearly something appeas to have been lost in translation here. The key part of the article - "The device will include the same chipset as the current PS3 but where it will differ from the current model is in the drive bay and in the attachment area." - makes it sound more like a redesign of the PS3, a la the PSOne and the slimline PS2, than a totally new console. And even if Sony is planning a PS3 redesign, it's still a long ways off.

Thanks to GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=25607499&part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6170092) .

or perhaps PSthree

That's definitely a translation thing. PS4? I highly doubt it.

A PS3 redesign is probably a cost thing. When they say "differ in the drive bay and extension area" I'm thinking they're going to do something that costs less to produce. It would be sheer insanity to take what the PS3 is now and add more features (thus adding to the cost).

But what about gam3ing in the 8th dimension, only $1599!

1) The PS3 will not have a ten year lifespan if Sony has any dreams of remaining one of the big-three. Gaming technology just doesn't have that kind of lasting power. Unless, by lifespan, they mean "We're gonna make a new console five years, but we'll keep making PS3 replacement parts for the next ten years!"

2) This is obviously a translation error. Either that, or Sony is completely batshit, more so than before.

It's a PS3 Elite, which everyone will think is terrible for putting in stuff that "should have been there day 1". Then they will complain that the price is too high, and should have been much lower then as well as now. Someone else will say all the games suck, and somebody else again will say that the games are awesome, and the first somebody sucks, and that the 20GB model actually "broke" game development for 4th dimension programming of teh next generation. Everyone then agrees that Kamalot is a fanboy, but nobody can agree which side he is on.

For myself, I will still be complaining that HD video disks are overpriced and selection is too small can can't believe I have been posting about it for 2 years without Mr. Sony listening to me on the intertubes.

The only logical reason I can see for this is that they're desperately trying to redesign it so they can release it at a far more competitive price without commiting financial suicide.

However, the fact that it's logical means that Sony is instead likely just making an 'Elite' PS3.

Im sorry to say this but this is not the PS4

Sony has said all along that they will be bringing out difference varieties of the PS3 to suite different consumer needs.

Expect to see more of this type of thing along the life of the PS3

I'm going to assume that redesign is ALL that they mean.
Of course, with the completely unpredictable way that Sony has been handling things lately (Calm down fanboys, not a sony bash, just a statement) it wouldn't surprise me if Ken came back, announced the PS? (a system so advanced it's NUMBER shall remain a mystery) and proceeded to bite the heads off live chickens while screaming MASSIVVVVE RACEEEER! and hurling unbought PS3's loaded with nitroglycerin into the crowd.
Punch and pie following the press conference.

Just when you thought Sony had run out of bizarre bits of news, it looks like we're going to get the PS3.5.

You know, there might just be a market for a PSthwii Ozzy Osborne edition. It could come with a breakable guitar for GH XXVII, to smash on the amps while warming up.

Sorry, feeling silly today.

So they are going to economically engineer the PS3, much in the way volkswagon economically engineered thier cars. Result??? about a 300% drop in quality lol.

I don't know why you guys are cracking jokes.

I, for one, hope there was nothing lost in translation. This is fantastic news, and exactly what Sony needs to kill the 360 headstart and Wii craze.

Sony is a frickin' genius. Remember what hype was like a year before the PS3 launched? Sony's figured out how to turn back the hands of time. If it markets and pushes this PlayStation 4 properly, it can kill the 360 just like the PS2 killed the DreamCast.

This is fantastic news. Absolutely brilliant. MS thought they pulled a fast one on the industry by dropping the Xbox like a carcass, and bringing in the 360 after only 4 years, well it looks like Sony is going to beat them at their own game.

This is awesome. We were beginning to see what the installed base was going to look like this generation, and Sony says "F U" to all the predictors. Clean slate, hitting reset and letting them know who has run the industry for the past dozen years.

It's officially a great time to be a gamer again.

Why not just get right down to business and release the PS5 in 2009? or 2nd half 2008. Just release a new PS every 4 months. You can even pimp them as seasonal art. Put colored leaves on the Fall model.

Don't get worked up, I'm just using your post to make a point. The PS3 is in it's infancy, and most consumers won't foot the pricetag for one (myself included) until either the game library grows (which it will) or the price goes down.

I don't see how jumping to a new platform will improve their standing. They NEED to concentrate on bringing back the Sony that ruled over us all when the PS1 took hold. They announce losses, job cuts, and THEN a new console?
If they DID, it could only mean they are in desperate need of revenue.
Not exactly a GOOD sign. Just my opinion.

Despite this, I still think any "NEW" console for them will just be a rehashed PS3. Maybe like the elite 360. It won't be a new console.

Here's a suggestion:

What would the reaction be if Sony released a Drive-less (Blu-Ray or even DVD) version of the PS3 for say..300 dollars, combined with a full-court press on the Playstation Network including Home, LittleBigPlanet, Warhawk, and a metric tonne more?

I know, dude. I was doing a Sony Defense Force impression. I'm glad I was convincing.

But seriously, if there's even a hint of truth to this report, Sony must be thinking in terms of what I said, even if they are planning an Elite-type system (if not a full generation jump), as you said.

Right?

This is a non arguement that you see pop up on the forums once in a while. Once again... you need a physical medium. Without one you can only reach a certain % of people (not everyone has braodband). Warhawk, LBP, ect. would fill up a HDD before you know it. 60 gig just is not enough space. That being said, neither is 120. For pure digital distribution, you would have to have an HDD of unheard of size, if you wanted it to last the duration of a system's life (and don't give me that "you can always download it again" crap).

Edit: When you say "Drive-less", do you mean hard-drive? If so, where would you store the games you downloaded? If you mean to alter the disk drive, see above. Altering the hardware is not an option after release.

sony needs to sit back and analyze the current situation that they are in now. If they did release any new system that does not support blu-ray they are FUCKED, see above post for referrence. sony want's blu-ray to pull out the big win over hd-dvd that they have literally bet the whole damn company on it, and because of the fact that they put it in the ps3 it is supposed to win right? WRONG. no one NEEDS 50 gig of freaking space to make a good quality game. I don't want to hear about engrossing atmosphere or game worlds that are mapped out to the actual size of countries or whatever, I want to hear about good original games that ANYONE can easily pick up and play. and before anyone starts yelling fanboy I am not, I enjoy great games, period. I bought my wii on launch day and have not regretted it yet. will I buy a ps3, not at the current asking price because the features that it touts mean nothing to me yet. hd is coming for me but I prefer to have my movie, gaming, and pc features to be different devices, not all in centers that can do a hundred things but does none of them well. the next gen war may just be starting but unless things turn around by this time next year sony has or will have lost it's #1 spot...just my two-cents...

What does this serve aside from being utter troll bait and fanboy fuel? Is it a big secret that the next run of hardware is well under way once the current crop is out? The Nintendo Dolphin project, was well known as early as 1998 to the public as an example. As well as rumblings of Xenon from Microsoft in late 2002.

So Playstation 3 will use software and some downloadable content, while the PS4 will use mostly downloadable content and some software. I'll keep rockin' my PS3 thank you. Anyway, is Sony ready to lose more money? It's only going to cost hard working people their jobs so who cares right?

Sure it is, it's been going on since the SNES days. You are right, however, what I meant was once hardware is released, that is the standard that must be maintained throughout the system's lifespan. Any new, or should I say revised hardware must be able to play the games that were out before the modifications. Simple.
