XBox Elite owners who have upgraded from a regular ol' 20GB XBox noticed something missing from their Elite Packaging; the data migration kit (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/datamigration.htm) to copy your contents of one hard drive to the other.

Thankfully Microsoft has come through with a solution for you, and the solution is free! Hit up this link (http://assets.xbox.com/en-us/support/MigrationKit-OrderForm.pdf) for the order form. And be sure to check out The Gamerscore Blog (http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2007/04/26/544410.aspx) for details on the process.

Free is good!

Why don't they just put the transfer cables in with all of them? Do they cost that much to produce?

... so the third post is an important achievement on these forums? You seem to have high expectations of me, I'll try harder in the future! ;)

Originally packaged is better!

What is an HD migration cable? Does it change your TV from SD to HD, not even passing ED on the way?

Oh, I get it. Hard Drive. Just when you thought the HD waters were cloudy enough, lol. :)

Yeah but how many people are going to actually upgrade from one to the other. I would be silly to assume that many people would need it.

At least they are including an HDMI cable.

I guess I don't understand the point of the migration cable. Since all it does is copy your data from the 20GB to the 120GB drive, it doesn't do anything more than re-downloading all your stuff other than erase your old drive. In fact, since your stuff remains tied to your old console, it's an order of magnitude worse.

I would just keep my old drive the way it is so I'd have my saves from the older games on it.

The problem of course is if you want to trade in your original 360 you cannot just transfer your data since you no longer have your hard-drive. Can you redownload all you DLC? Can you migrate saves using an overpriced memory card instead and redownload (Most) everything else (since you can longer play online or some such)?

You answered your own question right there....saved games is the reason.

Why don't they just put the transfer cables in with all of them? Do they cost that much to produce?Probably because MS knows not every one will use them. When my friends 360 was sent in for repairs last year, MS told him not to send in his HD. MS sent him a new 360 with another HD. He just popped it in and went to account recovery, and got 99% of his content back (I think the only thing he was missing was the Kameo Holiday pictures, as they were no longer available). Can't you do the same thing now? Or are tv, ect. different? I don't know because up here in Canada we don't get movies or tv shows. I guess that limits my need for more storage space.

I think I remember in some of the Elite threads that if you trade in your original Xbox to the EB\GS chains they're letting you take your original hd home with your new Elite, and you have 30 days to bring it back for full credit, etc. I might be making this up out of wishful thinking though.

I must be misunderstanding the issue. Can't you just copy your saves to a USB drive?

Peace

No. Would pretty much destroy their overpriced memory cart market if you could.

No because no money is transacted that way.

Thanks Bap. I was looking for the transfer kit in the box. I bought a Memory card to transfer everything but looks like I don't need it now. The only thing it would not let me transfer was my Halo & Halo 2 information.

Nope you can't.

That's crazy! I was certain you could, but you are right! Then I wanted to see if I was just making stuff up and tested out the PS3, and there you can copy saves via USB. Which is very cool. = ) (Though can't copy demo games over, which is dumb. Bought ones i could see, but demo? I mean, you just wanna share)

Peace
