From Next Gen (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5380&Itemid=2). 360 owners looking to pick up some more storage space worried that they'd lose all of their existing datat in the process can breathe easier today. The larger hard drive can be purchased individually or as part of the Elite 360 package due to begin retailing in US stores this weekend. The 120GB HDD comes bundled with a migration kit and simple instructions for transferring saved data from 20GB HDDs. However, those who want to upgrade their 360s to the Elite system will have to order a migration kit from Xbox.com, free of charge, to carry out the data transfer.
It has been reported that migration from the smaller HDD will wipe out any saved data on the 120GB hard drive so those upgrading are advised to carry out the process as soon as they purchase their Elite.
A data migration FAQ (http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2007/04/26/544410.aspx) can be read here and a demonstration of the process can be viewed over at Major Nelson’s blog (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/04/26/120-gb-hdd-and-elite-migration-how-to-video.aspx).The FAQ goes into greater detail about the process, but it all seems relatively painless.

From the FAQ:
You should also know that licenses for downloaded content like Xbox LIVE Arcade games and TV shows from Xbox LIVE are tied to the console they were originally downloaded on.
This means that while all of your Xbox LIVE Arcade games and TV shows will transfer, you will have to be connected to Xbox LIVE (to verify your identity) in order to access that content.
This is just lame, I had assumed that the license would transfer over since your old hard drive was getting wiped.

This process is permanent, so do not transfer your data if it is important to you to be able to access this content offline.
Consumers that purchase the standalone 120GB HDD will not experience any change in the way they access their data online or offline since they are using the same console and only upgrading to a larger hard drive.
Great. So, it's still an issue. It's good to see them hitting a viable solution for this.

YOU NEED 2 CONSOLES?! How the fuck are you supposed to do that if you just buy the after market 120 drive?
Secondly: HOW IS THIS SIMPLER THAN INSTALLING A HARD DRIVE ON A PC?!
God Damnit Microsoft, when did Sony get the GOOD PR?

THIS IS WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN. ALL CAPS NONSENSE BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.
You do NOT need 2 consoles to do the transfer, fuck man, get your facts straight or shut that goddamn mouth of yours. All I see is you in threads these days looking for things to complain about.

If you are upgrading to the standalone 120GB HDD and using your current Xbox 360, the process above is the same except that you don’t disconnect your 20GB HDD and instead attach the transfer cable to your new 120GB HDD. You then put in the software, follow the on screen instructions and when done remove your 20GB HDD and replace it with your new 120GB HDD.
I missed that little gem in the 8 step process. Yup totally easier than installing a SATA or Laptop hard drive. I mean those two steps of open bay, plug in are fucking tough.
Also, was it ever explained why it is a 1 time only, and 1 drive only process?
And what is to become of your now useless 20 GB drive?

Kinda like cotton.
I am still curious as to what is to become of the 20 GB drive after you "Upgrade."

Why would you need it? I don't see how this is a big deal. If you're upgrading to a 120gb, what would you do with the old one? You expect MS to give you compensation for the 20gb since you voluntarily decided to buy a bigger one??

No, But at least when I get a new HDD on my PC, I can keep and use the old one for a myriad of purposes. Just a crazy thought that maybe you would want to use your 100 dollar disc drive is all. And I think it shows one of the weaknesses of how Microsoft chose data storage. I do not think a lot of people are going to do this or anything like that. But at the end of the day, those who do will have a useless 20 GB drive on their hands.

I'm going to guess that this particular issue will NEVER go away with the 360.
I'm thinking it might be written into the legal agreements between MS and developers of games on Arcade.
I think it's lame and sucks serious ass, but they don't care what we think on that issue...

I guess in retrospect they could have made a USB connection to the HDD that would let you re-use the old one. I see where you're coming from there. Personally, I still think the 120gb is unnecessary for what's out there at this time though.

Lessee... It could become your 'MP3' HD! Remember when some PR guy @ Microsoft mentioned that you could buy a 20GB HD for all of your needs? This is my video HD and this is my game save HD, etc etc.
Good times...

Just responding in kind to the initial caps post. But for sure, serenity now! ;)

You send it to me, to put in my core system. That step go cut off by a misprint in some of the instructions, though, so that might be why you didn't see it. ;)

I know, it is kinda silly of them with this whole process. They should enable a one time "key change" with the transfer software to make it attached to the NEW console and not the old one anymore.. Goofy DRM.
