Straight from the official BioShock forums:

We have tallied up the votes, read your comments, and are happy to announce the details of the BioShock Limited Edition. Available on August 21st (the same day as the regular BioShock edition), the LE will include a Big Daddy figurine, a “Making Of” DVD, and a soundtrack CD. The LE packaging will also be an embossed graphic designed by the winner of the Cover Art Contest going on now at www.cultofrapture.com.

The BioShock Limited Edition will be available to US and Canada exclusively at GameStop and EB for US$59.99 (PC LE) and US$69.99 (Xbox 360™ LE). The Limited Edition will also be available in Europe and details about ordering a copy will be coming soon.

I’d like to personally thank everyone who participated in signing the petition for the BioShock Limited Edition and those who voted about what should go inside the box. We had over 26,000 responses to our poll, and those votes were the deciding factor in what we choose to put in the Limited Edition. We wanted to make the package affordable, but valuable and special for everyone purchasing it, and I think we did just that.
Nice extras, but the exclusivity is worrisome.

I was really hoping to never have to shop at GS again. Now, I might actually have to. I could always order it online...

Seriously, when they had a petition for a LE version of Bioshock, they should have mentioned that it would be exclusive for Gamestop/EB. I bet that petition would have had less signatures.

Actually, they both happened independently of each other. There's no malice here.

I get that, but Irrational Games or 2k were the ones that let news outlets know that they supported the petition, they could have warned us then.

I don't see why so many people are pissed off at these LE's being limited to Gamestop. The idea of the limited edition was brought around purely because of our signatures in the first place; they need to have them in stores where they can be certain they will sell due to the manufacturing costs associated with them. Gamestop is probably the most heavily known (good and bad) for the pre-orders, the pre-orders are probably what made this thing possible in the first place.

That said; i do most of my game shopping at Gamestop anyway; due to the fact that i know everyone who works there which has quite a few benefits - especially when something rare shows up.

I'll be pre-ordering the PC version before the end of the week.

I will just buy the normal edition from Futureshop.

I used to have that, but then the manager I knew left and the other guy that I knew got bumped up to manager and I don't really see him anymore, so I just get treated like a regular customer now which sucks.

I've pretty much gathered that once it's established that you know a tiny bit about gaming, the people who work there stop badgering you into whatever they're supposed to badger you into.

Of course, no matter where you go shopping they tend to badger you; but I don't look absolutely crazy when I say I'm looking for a Shin Megami Tensei game at a gamestop.

That sounds like a pretty crappy LE anyway. The soundtrack and Making Of will be online instantly... though I guess that figurine is a must-have for the 10-year-old nerd demographic.

On that note; why bother buying the game at all? It will surely be online in torrent form a week or two before the game actually hits the stores.

Some people like having physical copies of things that aren't stolen goods.

I don't get why people are shocked.

A small kinda obscure game that barely managed to get a special edition, and the special edition is only at the store that loves to do pre-orders and gets all the special editions of every game.

Best Buy would probably skip on special editions, as would most other stores, just the little stores. Even though it sucks that the few indie game stores can't have it as well.

Some people like having physical copies of things that aren't stolen goods.Doesn't seem like the same thing to me. If you've bought the game, you already own the soundtrack -- downloading it just saves the trouble of extracting the files. As for the Making Of, sure, avoid downloading it if you feel bad about "stealing" it, but that's a far cry from pirating the game itself. Not even the MPAA gives a damn about bootlegs of DVD extras -- this is the same thing.

The sad fact is that this ploy will probably succeed, because usually people buy special editions not for any rational reason but because they say SPECIAL EDITION in big embossed letters on the front.

I forgot that it was late August now. I may have a 360 by then (if the elite has become the premium by then). I'd still like to upgrade my computer again this year in which case I would get overlord/alan wake/bioshock for the computer, but I probably won't because I'll need fucking vista. I'd rather play the games for the computer, but Vista is preventing me from upgrading. PC gaming just has an allure that I find hard to resist. I'll probably pick those 3 games up for the 360 and do what I can with Team Fortress and Quake Wars on my 7800 GT (on the plus side, Company of Heroes runs great on my comp which is all I need).

WastelandDan

this sucks because I normally like to buy my games from a local game store. They hire kids who actually seem to know games and the asian woman who runs the store is fantastic. Also, it's the only store I've found in the city that deliberately underprices their games so that the sales tax takes less of a bite out of your ass. Most of their new games sell for around 56 or 57 dollars, which I think is a great consideration for them to make.

PREORDER OR DIE!!!!!

So, I'm not a fan of Gamestop/EBGames and actually have them on boycott. They are the best outlet for selling Limited Editions, I'm sure, as so much of their business model is around preorders. . . Oh well, I don't really want to pay $70 for one game anyway. $60 is already ridiculous.

MaiXu
04-24-2007, 06:55 AM
While I totally understand all the EB/GameStop hate, you guys are being ridiculous.

You want that SE of BioShock? Buy it, and support Irrational for listening to their fans.

You wanna stick it to EB? Don't buy their used crap. Don't sell games back to them for half the new price (only to have them turn around and sell it at $5 less than the new price). (In short, don't sell games back to them at all.) Don't buy bundles, don't buy strat guides, don't pre-order blockbusters, don't bite on any of the crappy third-rate shit they push on you. In short, don't support their crooked, industry-crippling business model.

Not buying this special edition is not going to hurt EB/GameStop. If it hurts anyone, it'll hurt Irrational, when 2K gets word that the fans that signed the petition aren't buying the product they clamored for.

If you like Irrational and want to support them, get the LE. If you think not buying it is hurting EB/GameStop, you're deluding yourself.

bean19

You wanna stick it to EB? Don't buy their used crap.

1. Irrational getting $60 for one game is more than enough support. The extra $2-5 they get from the limited addition (minus the cost of tchotkes) isn't going to keep the lights on.

2. I think for a lot of people, Gamestop is there only real "used" market, but I don't buy their used crap either. . . because of how annoying the service is there. . . and because everything is almost always cheaper at www.half.com.

I was thinking the exact same thing.. what if this game turns out to be a dog?.. what's the point of paying extra for it?.. You never know.. I've been burnt too many times in the past with overhyped games.. I've learned not to get to amped up for any game nowadays.

IagoTheHunted

Yeah the exclusivity is a bummer, but I have to agree that ultimately getting the LE supports the petitioned special edition more than those gamestop bastards. In fact they probably get even smaller than normal profits off an LE because of the considerably higher cost of materials and the fact that it's new (IE not used). Remember that NEW games DO support the people who deserve it reguardless of where you buy, it's the used crap that bleeds you and hefts their profits.
