Pro-G has even more Nintendo DS coverage with a preview and gameplay move of Metroid Prime: Hunters (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/previews/pid/957/79/) and a video showing a full race of Mario Kart DS (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/previews/pid/108/77/).

Upon starting the multiplayer game we were given the choice of four playable characters: Samus Aran, Noxus, Spire, and Kanden. Each character has a slightly different HUD while playing the game and each has a different second form. While Samus has her morph ball, the others change into rather different things, which to be honest, look far more dangerous than a ball - even if it can drop bombs. Still, it's good to see that there is going to more to the character choice than whose name you like the best.

Hunters is certainly looking nice, but there is no sign of a single player game at the moment.

Yeah, they're keeping the single player under wraps for now. Apparently there are some surprises in it they don't want to show off just yet.

I certainly hope there is a single player game in there. Multiplayer is fun and all, but most situations where I use a portable console I don't have any friends with me.

From what the one developer I saw on the G4 E3 coverage was saying, they were doing a full-ass campaign like with Metroid Prime on the Gamecube.

That's good... if you're going to have a campaign, it might as well be full-ass.

Am I the only one who had a really hard time with the controls on Hunters? It wouldn't make or break my picking it up (this and Mario Kart alone are enough to warrant the purchase of the DS), but I'm wondering if anyone knows if they're messing with the control scheme or leaving it the way it was within the demo. It might be one of those things where it just takes some practice and time getting used to - I'm actually better with a console FPS set-up than I am a keyboard and mouse now - so I might just need to work with it. It'll most likely be customizable (here's hoping at least), but I'm still slightly concerned that my concentration on the controls will make me less likely to enjoy the game itself.

The inclusion of, well:

That's good... if you're going to have a campaign, it might as well be full-ass

makes this even more or a must-buy. I loved Prime and Echoes, so I'm more or less convinced at this point that they can do no wrong. Sadly, however, I doubt I'll get much use out of the multiplayer aspect unless they include bots, but I won't hold my breath. None of my friends are "Gamers" so I'll be the only kid in town with a DS, so the inclusion of a single-player campaign is almost a must for me.

Especially Samus ass. Much better than Master Chief's ass. :D

I think it is the best implementation of a FPS control scheme on any console, with the exception of the mouse on the Dreamcast.

I picked up a DS at launch, and I've had a good time with it so far. Now that some of the games I've been looking forward to are coming out, it makes it all the more worth it.

Off topic: Did anyone else notice the freakishly long thumbnails the guy had who was playing the demos? (Mario Kart in particular?)

Lol. I've heard of this 'Inter Web' you speak of. I was under the impression the DS needed to be around other DS's in order to do its multi-player thing, similar to the PSP. I know I read somewhere that people were setting up "portals" (or whatever) so I could plug my PSP into my computer here (using the 'Inter Web') and play Lumines with others, but can the DS do the same? As i don't own one, I'm not quite as familiar with its various ins and outs yet. Or, can I just use the DS wirelessly and 'find' others with one and play head-to-head against them? If so, that would make Nintendo's little hand-held twenty times cooler than originally figured.

At E3, Nintendo promised online Wi-Fi multiplayer for the DS. So far, it has been confirmed for Mario Kart and Animal Crossing.

I'm thinking that Mario Kart is a farily intense game where latency matters a lot. If they can pull off Wi-Fi Multiplayer with Mario Kart, why not Metroid Prime: Hunters?

Also, there will be no fee to play online.

Currently, none of the games support playing with others online, only locally. Nintendo's approach is two-fold. The first layer of Wi-Fi allows you to connect over the Internet to only friends on your buddy list. The second layer allows you to find other people online and challenge them to a game. You can imagine that the first layer will be used for games like Animal Crossing, where you don't want complete strangers coming into your town and chopping down your trees. The second layer will be implemented in games like Mario Kart where you can find complete strangers and school them.

Online Animal Crossing? If you'll excuse me, I have to break out into a song and dance number now.

:D

I know how you feel. My wife and daughter are huge Animal Crossing fans. It is the game that got them into gaming. After Animal Crossing, it was a short trip to Phantasy Star Online and now Guild Wars.

I like games we can play together.

No, the PSP can actually already connect to wireless access points and play online.

The DS is physically capable of internet access (it uses 802.x wireless), but it lacks a built-in TCP/IP stack for it to actually get online. But any game that implements the TCP/IP stack (which is likely in the hands of most DS developers already) can both play on wireless Internet as well as the already-supported wireless LAN between any other nearby DS.

Really? Because I have wireless set up in my house and can't get online to play anyone with my PSP. I downloaded the first pack for Wipeout wirelessly, but haven't found a way to go head-to-head using the same method yet. Is there a way to search for others that I'm just not seeing? Because I have yet to be able to figure that business out unless they're either right next to me or just a few feet away.

The sports games support the INFRASTRUCTRE wi-fi mode. You need to look for that on the box. That means wi-fi play via the internet. I know the basketball and hockey game both support this.

ps - I noticed the long finger nails too...eww. :)

Does Wipeout Pure support Internet play? I thought only sports and Twisted Metal did.

Actually AC does support internet play. But you're right, strangers causing havoc would suck. So they're not allowing just anyone to come into your town, you have to have them on your buddy list for them to enter. Which is a good idea considering the target age for the product. Sounds interesting.

The target age being...anyone who can read?

I think you and I are in agreement. I was trying to say Animal Crossing WILL have Internet play, but maybe it didn't come out that way.

I hope playing online is better in the DS than it is on the PSP. Entering text is so bad on the PSP and the play is laggy too. Maybe by taking the extra time, the DS will actually turn out fun to play online and easy to use.

Bah. I am not a fan of this new-fangled sports genre business. Well, not traditional sports, in the larger sense of the word. I definitely enjoy me some Hot Shots Golf and some Wipeout Pure, but I wouldn't readily throw them into the sports catagory. HSG is more of an arcade golf sim (though it does have some excellent physics), IMO, and Wipeout is insane stuff blowing up all around you while the dude in your rear-view takes some spikes up his backside. Those two certainly need online play.

I seem to remember an interview from E3 with the lead designer mentioning that the single player mode would involve playing as other characters. That would certainly be the easiest way to implement a wide variety of different abilities with the interface they currently have.

When I saw the hidden video in the demo, I immediately thought 'I bet we get to play as them' and 'I can't wait'.

Metroid Prime: Hunters will not be online. They said in an interview that given the timeframe they had to work with it came down to a choice between fully functional single cart multiplayer or unrefined online. They chose single cart multiplayer.

Also, the impression I get from reading interviews is that the single player mode will be a series of missions not a traditional Metroid adventure.

Being a huge Metroid fan I'm hoping they can pull it off. I'm very glad they went with characters that have different abilities (ie: one of the additional bounty hunters in "ball form" can climb walls). I'm bored of FPS games where everyone has the same abilities, uses the same weapons. Team Fortress was always one of my favorite Quake mods.

The single player mode could be good.

I certainly don't mind them mixing up the formula as long as the quality is still there. I don't really consider this a Metroid game anyways.

I'm just really hoping that the "Metroid Dread" Game Informer announced but was absent from E3 is actually a real game that is in development. A 2D Metroid game alone makes the purchase of a DS worth it.

I hadn't heard about a 2D Metroid game for the DS, although it sounds great! I imagine a map and the ability to select weapons on the second screen. What other cool uses could they come up with for the Metroid series?
