No announcements regarding God of War 3, but the site (http://www.islandofrhodes.org/) evidently contains God of War 2 developer commentary and videos (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/god-of-wars-islandofrhodes-org-is-developer-commentary-site/).
The site does have some neat commentary with Cory Barlog, director of GoW, about the Colossus scene (like it was originally even longer) and other developers. Remember, in a world without the intertubes, to even learn about the site you had to reach an insane combo count, so this was originally meant as fan service. If you've played God of War 2 and are interested in some of the technical background information go check it out.

I think the hype machine took over on this one... If it had been a MAJOR announcement they wouldn't have hidden it so deep in the game. That said, I was a little disappointed.

Wasn't all of this making of stuff included in the bonus content with the game?

What a crock of shit! Hopefully this will the gaming "news" websites to chillout when they see a countdown, instead of stir up a hornet's nest with wild speculations.
Hopefully this'll throw a monkey wrench into viral marketing, poor marketing will probably be refered to as "pulling a GoW".

coo coo for comments.....everyone was hyped up all over to for just some comments, and to get this you had to get like some billion points or so.

No, I think poor viral marketing will forever be known as "pulling a sony". That PSP blog was truly disgusting in every way shape and form.

I've read that Jimmy Hoffa hid the God of War developer's commentary in Al Capone's vault (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mystery_of_Al_Capone's_Vault).

Island of Rhodes wasn't Geraldo's fault.

Clearly it was devised in a world where the intertubes didn't exist.

Which is more of a sensationalist? Geraldo or Sony?

True! And GoW is a Sony product, pulling a sony +1

Yes it was a let down... But I don't think it was ever meant to be something major. Sony didn't pull a Summa by hyping this at all. They clearly stated it was fan service and that it was unrelated to the PSP or PS3. WE got carried away, Sony did not.

How lame. I'll never look at countdowns the same way again

Why didn't they just put this all on the actual game disc? You know, like they did with the original game?

The PR guy who decided to have this much hype built for something that is such a letdown should definitely get written up. Bad move.

This behind the scenes stuff was much cooler than some lame promotional site for a PSP game. Plus, there's even more hidden stuff and another countdown hidden in it! Maybe you guys that just want marketing material will get your wish after this countdown.

The whole thing is marketing material. The countdown, the videos, etc. People who, 'just want marketing material' should be happy with the whole fiasco.
People who want game announcements may be disappointed.

On the bright side HD-Mode does look much better. L1+L2+L3 + Square + Circle on start up. Purple Legal screen and prettier graphics.
It also leads to another count-down in 12 more days.

Try clearing your cache and reloading, it was still showing the timer for me too until I did that.

Go to K0taku... they have all the dirt. There are a number of puzzles to complete to get to the next countdown. And HD-mode isn't really HD, just fewer filters, etc. so the image looks crisper on an HDTV. Looks a little nicer (Kratos' armor looks more detailed).

I thought you were gonna show us the difference between the two modes.
Wouldn't this have been better if the game just asked you when you first turned it on? Before you start play, it should say, "Are you on an HDTV? Yes | No"

Whatever.
Also: I have changed my opinion of God of War. Fuck this stupid franchise. Fuck it until it dies. God of War 2 fucking sucks a nut. There I said it.
What the hell is up with all the hating? They put up a bunch of promo vids, which you find through an easter egg in the game. Now who hyped what, and why aren't you happy? Some people have a strange sense of entitlement....
That said, I never realised that GoW's boss battles were just Dragon's Lair type things, which is a bit of a dissapointment. Pretty, though :)

MacD - The use of a countdown for press materials is the hype-builder. People expected something more interesting than simple promo videos. However, now that people know that there is an HD-mode that the game can be played in, it is not as much of a let down.
Boss battles have cinematic "Dragon's Lair" type things going on in them as events, but this is in addition to the normal things you expect in adventure game boss battles - attacking, dodging, figuring out weak points, etc.
