From the lads and lassies at Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=75154) comes the story of one Zander Urquhart, a personal trainer who has begun to integrate the Wii into some of his clients' fitness programs. The 32 year-old, who runs WestCoast Fitness, reckons it's the perfect way to reach out to people that don't normally associate themselves with traditional exercise, and decided to give it a go after he saw a porky youngster work up a sweat using the console. At first I took it along to private clients who had children that didn't take part in exercise - and they loved it," Urquhart beamed. "While the adults were doing a hard work out, the kids were getting involved too. After that I started getting requests from adults and I started looking into it a bit more. It turns out that it can benefit everyone." The article goes on to quote university studies that show that 15 minutes on the Wii can burn 125 calories (roughly the equivalent of a can of regular soda)

While right now I'm not quite ready to declare the Wii as the next big fitness craze, it does present some interesting possibilities. If nothing else it can get people off their duffs while they game.

integrate the wiimote into a pair of weighted boxing gloves and you have yourself gaining some muscle and a nice workout. Many possibilities for exercising, but I suppose only the future will tell.

That is an excellent idea. Can anyone find a pair of inexpensive wrist-weights? I'll order them and go boxing every night. Maybe with a bit of effort and dedication, I can turn my man-boobs into pectorals. ;)

Now if I could just find a Wii to purchase...

This is a VERY good fitness system. Ms. Kamalot uses it several times a week. The 'game' is quite well put together, and very positive. If you need a motivating home workout program, I would very much recommend Yourself Fitness.

Edit: Yourself Fitness also runs on the 360 through backwards compatibility.

QFT...

On a side note, I've been to 4 house parties since the Wii was released where the systems were up and running during the parties with a pretty large crowd gathered to watch & play. I have never seen such a thing in my life.

Ms. Kamalot works at a financial firm office. For a recent work event, she took the Wii and hooked it up to a projector. Her boss brought in a 360 hooked up to another projector. Wii was the life of the party. Everyone there wanted to play, and several people purchased one based on the event. Even her boss got one.

And I probably would of been on the Xbox 360 alone and happy. :P

I understand. I olove my 360 and enjoy it regularly, but the 360 games don't appeal to a wide audience the same way Wii does. Typical non-gamers look at the controller and start to freak. But hand someone a Wii remote, and tell them to pretend they are playing tennis, instant fun.

I guess. I haven't been able to get a Wii at the moment. Shun that of which you don't understand.

That seems really unlikely to me. When I'm on an elliptical or a treadmill it takes a fair amount of work to burn 125 calories, and I can't see a Wii workout being comparably intense for the same time interval.

This is all well and good Nintendo but where is the real backbone of any system... the porn . I mean party games are fun but when you just want to sit alone and touch yourself, there is just no recourse. And don't tell me about the wii browser, I want games with real motion controlled porn, Nintendo is too kiddy etc etc...

I've been thinking about this for a while....why hasn't Pelican or Nyko or some third-party peripheral company make weighted wrist straps for the Wiimote and find some way or tacking on a similar strap to the Nunchuk?

These straps should be weighted 2, 4 and 6 pounds each. Hella workout right there. Excellent conditioning material.

Just so you guys know, Nintendo is developing a game oddly enough called "Wii Fitness".

I was it as well, and it can be a bit harsh. I was hoping for reup but i think the company got put out of it's misery during a court case against them.

Edit: Checked there website and they are back. A new version is already in the works.

Ask and ye shall receive. Joystiq had this article (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/09/wii-wrist-weights-why/) pointing to this blog (http://alchemi.blogspot.com/2007/02/wii-weights.html) with a prototype for exactly what we are discussing.

I think those numbers might come from this guy's experiment.

It's just boxing, and I think you have to really work to get near 125 calories. Really punch and dodge. Not just move the hands.
