AlanWAKE.Net (http://www.alanwake.net/), official fansite for Alan Wake has an interview (http://www.alanwake.net/forum/showthread.php?t=121) with Remedy up at the site.

AWN: Alot of people are comparing this game to Grand Theft Auto, what makes Alan Wake different?

SL: Alan Wake is more tightly character-driven and story-oriented. Meaning that the player’s goals and missions are closely focused around Alan Wake and his story. Also, the setting, the tone and the game being an action thriller all set it clearly apart from the GTA games.

This game's tech demo engine thingy at E3 was awesome. I love my Alan Wake T-shirt.

I can’t wait for this game. It seemed that most people in the press missed that at E3 this was running in real-time on a 360 dev kit and was being controlled with a controller S. This would be a very strong launch title for the 360.

It looks like you're going to get your wish, Achilles, if EBGames.com is right. They have Alan Wake listed for $59.99 with a release date of 11/1/2005.

E-tailers are never right. They make up dates and prices as they see fit.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a 2006 game.

Secondly Varsity is right that they do make up dates, I used to work there and they do that just so they can make an entry for it and start taking pre-orders. Thirdly Royal Fool, launch window is the first 6 months, so as long as it’s in there someplace it’s still a good scene. Thanks for the responses!

Why is any game that features an open environment and non-linear gameplay always accused of copying GTA? I mean, don't we fucking want our games to be open ended and non linear? It's getting to the point where people are going to say "Look, that game has cars in it, what a GTA rip off!". I mean, great job by Rockstar on pushing the industry forward, but just cause they did it first, is no one else ever allowed to do something even remotely similar? Alan Wake uses a fucking light to destroy shadowy enemies at night that may or may not be figments of his imagination, while becoming more and more insane, and wondering why this woman looks just like his dead wife [from what I can gather]. That is a far fucking cry different than taking over the streets of LA or getting drug money back from the people who stole it or getting revenge on a backstabbing girlfriend. I think that Rockstar has started something great, and the more games that attempt a similar framework the better. It only means that the ideas will evolve faster that developers will be able to create even better open ended games. Until then, I just wish that every other game would not be compared to GTA. /end rant.

Anyways, to bring this thread back on topic, I am madly looking forward to this game. Thanks to the Max Payne games, Remedy is now one of my favourite developers, and when they talk about Alan Wake they do so with great passion, something that can only be a good sign.

I don't think anyone compared it to GTA in a negative way... I think most of us do believe open-map non-linear gameplay is a great thing.
