It took three months for this? I'm still waiting for the patch that keeps it from crashing in every game.

I use http://laptopvideo2go.com/ for new NVIDIA drivers. Much easier than waiting for the slow-ass laptop releases, and it's still quicker for my desktop too. LaptopVideo2Go has had the 97.94 drivers up since February 23rd.

I'm curious how you crash in every game, I've been using a 8800 GTX for a few months now and haven't had problems like that.

How about freaking drivers for the other cards? Like my 7800GT SLI setup? They haven't update the others for 6 freaking months!

I use the www.tweaksrus.com "Xtreme-G" drivers for nvidia, have for quite a few years now. I just seem to get much better performance out of them than i do with the stock nvidia drivers.

Don't be dumb like me and download these thinking they affect the 7x00 series ><

On the one hand, nVidia seems to have completely abandoned us XP users with our 7 series and below.

On the other, at least our shit works. This is why I'm sticking with my 7600GT until they fix the 8 series, which will be this winter, if ever. I'm praying ATI makes a comeback. I miss the 9800 generation.

Seriously, cut them a little slack here guys. Do you have any idea how HUGE a project these unified drivers are? They have as much code in them as the entire Windows NT 4 Kernel. That's a ton of code.

...that's still not an excuse to not have this done earlier. It's not like they didn't know they were coming out with these cards.

These arent unified drivers. These only affect the 8800 series.

As for my crashing, it's pretty much inevitable and almost seems like overheating, but my temps are fine when it happens. The thing just gets stuck in a loop. These drivers still crash for me, too.

Then something is wrong with the card.

I've had an eVGA 8800 GTS since late February and have had not a single crashing problem. It sounds to me like you've got some kind of hardware issue, whether it is your videocard or something else entirely I cannot be sure of, though.

Yeah, not crashing here either. You have a system problem.

Damn MSI POS. They, of course, claim it isn't their fault. It's past the newegg RMA time. I'm not sure what to do, really. Part of it is that I don't have the time to deal with these companies.

I have a MSI brand 6600GT where the fan literally fell off. The connecting wires looked burnt through... I'm still using it though, and haven't noticed any ill effects. :o

Mmm, OpenGL 2.1 support...

Not that it really matters, since it's an XP driver, and Microsoft "encourages" people to use DirectX instead. Still, I'm glad to see 2.1 getting some love, because it really is a frakking awesome spec.

Exact same thing here. Except when I tried to RMA, MSI said that I caused it to happen by OCing it...which I didn't.

My 8800GTX is rock "f" solid. Welll, that is after only a few days. That said, Stalker and Oblvion run at max eye candy with nary a hiccup. I'm talking wavy grass and effing tree leaves visible from 8 billion yards away.

I'm serious. Some of the vistas I can get in Oblivion now, with nary a slowdown, are freaking amazing. My roomate who doesn't know dick about this shit asked me what video I was watching when I was playing Oblivion.

Is there an ATI equivalent?

I have an 8800GTX running on Vista 64 and have had no problems in WoW or CnC3.

mpsmith, I'd try swapping the power supply first and then running "Memtest86" overnight. I will say, I'll never buy another MSI motherboard again. I had one that simply never worked right from day one. RAM speed had to be downclocked from day one for it to pass memtest86 testing.

You'd be surprised at how many people are running with bad ram but, they don't notice it till they run apps that use tons of RAM.

Why are people complaining that drivers haven't been released for the older cards? Are you having problems with games? I've got an old 6800 GT and I have no problems with any of the the current games that I've purchased. Why would you want new drivers if everything is working?

Also, why would any hardcore gamer switch to Vista at this point knowing that XP is a very solid platform for pc gaming? That has to be one of the dumbest things a pc gamer can do.

make sure theres proper ventilation underneath the video card, if you sandwiched a sound card in there right next to the cooler its likely you are getting reduced airflow through the heatsink, another option would be to stick a blower in a pci slot underneath it, the 8800 series are long as hell, id say in 90% of mid tower cases they are literally going to subdivide the airflow of the case in half leaving you with a potentially hot situation on the bottom half of the case.

or your card is just borked...

thankfully i got a evga +++ on lifetime warranties.

Well, I lowered my CPU/RAM back to stock and the problem SEEMS to have gone away. The crashes were kind of random before so its hard to say... Odd that my 6800 never crashed with the same settings.

Yeah, I didn't OC either, and my case temp is 23C.

mpsmith. that's kind of a big "duh" moment then isn't it? You blamed Nvidia because you were overclocking? Backing off the overclock's the first thing you should have done with the first crash.

I sell software online, when people bitch about crashing and I find out they're OC'd I basically wash my hands of them. XP never crashes so, when people report XP crashing, I know automatically that something's wrong with their PC's.

I've run prime 95 on both cores for 20+hrs and my 6800 never crashed. It just seemed stable enough to write it off. I'm still not convinced that was it, though.

MasterKwan

People who OC say that all the time. It doesn't matter. All it takes is one app to use more or use memory differently and your PC crashes. You probably should have been running memtest86. It that'll run over-night then I consider the OC successful (though it doesn't factor the PCI-E bus speeds).

You stopped OCing and it stopped crashing. I'd call that reasonable evidence

mpsmith
04-07-2007, 10:52 PM
Certainly reasonable, but not verified. The worst part of it is that it was random. Sometimes I'd just start BF2 and itd crash or other times it took an hour or so.

[edit]
And another reason I didn't think it was the OC was the preponderance of other people with 8800s that seemed to be having the same issues (do a google search).
