Official Press Release:

Codemasters Online Gaming is pleased to announce that Sensible World of Soccer (SWOS) has been listed as one of the ten most influential games of all time at this year’s Game Developers Conference. In order to gain a place on this prominent list, games must represent the start of a genre that is still a key component of the games industry today.

David Solari - Vice President of Codemasters Online Gaming commented, “‘Sensible World of Soccer is a seminal title which delivers a very pure gameplay experience. It’s fabulous to get such an accolade and we are really looking forward to bringing this classic game back on Xbox Live® Arcade and PC later this year. We think it’s important to stay true to the original and we’ll be delivering what fans of the original SWOS have been eagerly waiting for years, SWOS online multiplayer!”

Sensible World of Soccer is scheduled for launch on the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft via Xbox Live Arcade in summer 2007, with a PC version to follow thereafter. Sensible World of Soccer brings with it all the classical elements to the next generation of players.

Sensible World of Soccer for Xbox Live Arcade will keep all the original touches that made it a genre-influencing title, as well as introducing optional enhancements to bring its look right up-to-date. Retaining all its rapid pick-up-and-play-ability, get ready to play your friends online in this fast-paced, genre-defining title.
Cue non-soccer fans lining up to point out that the words "sensible" and "soccer" should never be used in the same sentence. Bah!

I eagerly await the Xbox Live Arcade version.

One of my all time favorites, and just about the only game I actually purchased for my Amiga.

Can anybody justify calling it soccer?

Football, the real name, is far more appropriate.

American football? When the game is played mainly with the hands?

Please not this argument.

It's as bad as PS3 vs 360 or Windows vs Linux.

it's a british team. they clearly only chose 'soccer' because of the aliteration. meh.

back ot: i don't think i ever played SWOS, but i played a lot of SS. it was awesome :)

might have to get some *** points for the first time when this arrives on XBLA. though i'll have to import them from somewhere, as the price is artificially inflated in the UK, and i'd rather pay the same amount but give a third party the shipping-money :)

SWOS ruled, and it had the best intro in any sports game, ever.

I was expecting more "soccer haters" but I am pleasantly surprised to find otherwise! I never played, or even heard of SWOS, but being a soccer fan (sorry, I'm American and must call it soccer so other Americans understand what I am talking about) I can say that I am very curious to see what this game is all about.

What makes SWOS stand-out from Fifa and Winning 11?

SWOS is basically a legendary game for those that started gaming back in the mid 90's.
I remember when back in the day when some of my class mates ditched classes just to spend the day playing the game.
It actually came out before Winning 11 and at the time Fifa was a bit different game, it had an isometric view and you were able to kick the referee and run around the field until he catched up to you to show you a red card. It changed to view to the one we know in FIFA 96 I think, and at the time it had futsal (5 vs 5) and besides some specials moves like elbowing adversaries you could also simulate fouls, which would sometimes work.
The best thing in SWOS was definately the carrer mode which was similar (but better) to what the master league is now in WE.

When you walk through a storm, Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm, There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown,
Walk on, walk on, With hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone...

This is the most oxymoronic title ever. Or whatever "contradiction in terms/paradox" the kids find hip these days.

It's as bad as PS3 vs 360 or Windows vs Linux. or porkchops vs. cannibalism.

The controls in that game are amazing. One stick, one button, and you can do anything you want with the ball. It just feels right.
