Another Monday, another VC update (http://gonintendo.com/?p=15467):
Star Fox(R) 64 (http://www.vc-reviews.com/review/459/star-fox-64-lylat-wars.php) (Nintendo(R) 64, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Players take the controls of their Arwing and complete 15 missions to reach the final objective: a showdown on Venom, the home planet of the interplanetary tyrant, Andross. Throughout the adventure, players have to accomplish challenging objectives in order to reach and conquer every mission. Skim over the surface of an alien sea, weave through the concrete canyons of a futuristic metropolis or dodge planetoids the size of mountains. Between missions, players will be treated to real-time 3-D movies that progress the story of the Star Fox team of space mercenaries in their struggle against the evil ape emperor, Andross.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(R) (http://www.vc-reviews.com/review/15/teenage-mutant-ninja-hero-turtles.php) (NES(R), 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Cowabunga! Players take control of the turtles in a half shell and rescue reporter April O’Neil from the clutches of the evil Shredder. Players must scarf down some pizza to keep up their energy, as they’ll need it to defeat Shredder. Turtle Power!
(C)2007 Mirage Studios, Inc. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(R) is a trademark of Mirage Studios, Inc. All rights reserved. (C)1989 Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd.
Dragon’s Curse (http://www.vc-reviews.com/review/484/dragons-curse.php) (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): After defeating the Mecha Dragon in the depths of the Dragon Castle, the wounded beast casts a spell on the hero, turning him into an ugly creature. To return to human form, he must find the Salamander Cross, which can break any curse. This side-scrolling action role-playing game is nonlinear, allowing players to venture freely. Collect gold and items while upgrading equipment and powering up stats. The hero starts as Lizard-Man but, upon defeating the dragon bosses, is changed into other creatures such as Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man,Tiger-Man and Hawk-Man. Each creature possesses distinct abilities such as the ability to fly, swim, walk on ceilings or cling to walls. Players use each creature’s special skills to widen your search for the Salamander Cross and bring the hero back to his human form!Starfox 64 - finally! Whoo-hoo! Wait. Why the hell is that bastardization of a TMNT game 600 points? That had better be a misprint.

TMNT: NES - Most underbought VC Game ever

Nintendo's Virtual Console really needs some more 2-player Co-Op games that are easy to pick up. After beating all the Mario games with my girlfriend, she's having a hard time with Donkey Kong Country, which is the only other game I could see her getting into.
Simple, two-player co-op please. :)
PS: Star Fox howls! Ahem.

I remember the NES version of TMNT. May it burn in hell with all those other hard to control games. I remember dieing so much with that game.
The sneaking... the top-down view/side scroller hell... the incredibly slow bo attack for donatello...
I remember begging my parents to get it for me on my ninth birthday! They went through such extremes, as it was sold out everywhere. They went out of state to get the game for my b/d. Shame the game was as difficult as it was.

TMNT: NES - Most underbought VC Game everAt 500 points, it would have been hard to swallow. But at 600 -- that' just ridiculous.
Konami should be paying US to download this game.

Donatello's attack is slow because it has crazy reach. I can't be the only person that likes this game. Yeah its hard but most NES games were. This game is a classic.

This is true, I remember getting past the first area just once. That game was haard, especially if you were a kid.

Agreed, the game was so bad it wasn't even funny. I remember back as a child having beaten 50+ NES games by then, and that one by far was one of the most INFURIATING ever. Especially the Dam level and defusing the frigging bombs. That was just ridiculous.
Nintendo, I'll take my money to play your game now. :D

This game was fun, and for the record Donatello was the best character in the game. If it was Battletoads, the opinions would be different, a game which truely was infuriatingly hard.

Yeah, the first TMNT was pretty enjoyable, but difficult. I've never managed to beat the game, although I almost killed Shredder...like once or twice, and gave up afterwards.

Too many of you people listen to that angry Nintendo nerd. I beat this game when I was like 8.You were the most gifted 8 year old ever, then. I still have this game on my shelf with my other Nintendo games, and to this day, my blood boils a little when I think about it. 2 of the 4 Turtles sucked, and having a bunch of places in game where one misstep killed your Turtle made the game infuriating.

If TMNT had a save feature, maybe (MAYBE) I could forgive the difficulty. But as it is, no way in hell, that thing is a piece of shit through-and-through.

Wow, so much TMNT hate! I remember having a hell of a time with it when I was very young, but I picked it up when I was a bit older and got the hang of it. It was very hard, but I felt accomplished when I finished it.

I believe Ultra games made the first one. Konami made TMNT2: the arcade game for NES (a port of their awesome arcade game).
TMNT1 sucked balls. I BARELY beat it with a game genie.

I would definitely agree the price is too high, despite my fond memories of the game. Maybe they're thinking the movie being out might drive people to buy it.

I managed to beat the game when I was...Oh gods...how old was I? *Has to actually pause and think since he is 1 year from the big 3 0* 9? 10? No wait...yeah...10ish. Somewhere in there. Cripes my memory is swiss frigging cheese. I seriously hope I don't die from Alzheimers later on. Cripes.
Regardless, yes, the game is difficult as all get out, and Michaelangelo and Raphael are damned worthless because of their range of the weapons. Donatello was the best and then you had Leonardo. Put simply, the game wasn't tested well enough nor balanced.
But I did beat it. I put this game up there right up with the difficulty of Ninja Gaiden III for the NES. Though far more difficult. It was a rough brutal battle, and I died more times then I even care to count/had to start over etc. But I beat it. I think I managed to beat it an entirety of 2 times before I said screw it and shelved the game.
Shame too, some of the game was actually good, but man, alot of it was just downright BAD.

And you KNOW a TMNT game has to suck when the cover art features the turtles all wearing red masks.

Weren't all their masks red in the original comics?Yes, they were. In fact, the boxart to the first TMNT game was taken from the cover from one of the comics.
But the funny thing is that this game was coming out at the height of the cartoon craze. The characters in the game had the proper colored masks from the cartoon, but the cover had them all in red masks. It was just strange. It baffled me as a kid until I discovered the comic books some years later.

Konami made the Ultra brand when Nintendo of America would only let third parties make a certain number of games a year, so this way Konami could make double the games. Acclaim did the same thing, making another label called LJN.

I loved TMNT1 when I was a kid, and was sorely disappointed in TMNT2: The Arcade Game. Sure, TMNT was crazy hard, but many games were back then. Beating it is one of my proudest gaming achievements, and I remember frantically bouncing around trying to record the ending on our VCR after beating it. Good times.
And Donatello is broken. Real men use Raphael.
Starfox 64 any good? Is it worth playing (in 2007) without any nostalgia attached to it? I enjoyed the original Starfox.

Wonder how long until Star Fox (SNES) and TMNT IV (SNES) make the list.
And just to get it out of the way: "Do a barrel roll!"
I'm guessing the extra 100 points on TMNT is for royalties or whatever. One might expect all royalty-based games to have higher prices to cover those bases.

"Do a barrel roll!"
The fact that it took this long really says something about this website.
TMNT is one of my best friends favorite games ever, I have never played it.
Either way, Star Fox 64, good stuff. I loved this game back in the 8th grade, and beat it more times than I can count. I need a Wii, more for the VC than anything else.

Goodness - Starfox 64 is EXCELLENT, and I believe is generally accepted to be better than it's predecessor(goodness knows that I think it is). Totally worth 10 bucks.
Also, Nintendo, so far, hasn't released an 64 games that weren't in-house. Wonder why that is?
Also, why is TMNT breaking the usual pricing structure?

I am going to be cycnical here and assume that they are releasing a Turtles game because of the movie, and they aren't releasing the arcade port because Microsoft has the licence rights to the actual arcade game for Live, so they might not have been able to get the NES version, in all of its pizza-hut sponsored glory.
Of course, they are overcharging and late, which only serves to help prove that marketing is involved.
I tried playing through a friend's copy a few times back in the day, but usually died and/or lost interest on the level after the dam, with the maze of warehouses and blocked streets.
I am going to have to look into Dragon's Curse. I really need to get an actual controller. Even for the games it supports, the wiimote is not ideal for classic gaming.

Well, the comic books started in 84. The cartoon started in Cctober '88 as a Saturday morning cartoon. Before then there was a 5-part mini-series in December '87. The game came out in May of '89, so the cartoon was still in its infancy.
And they made Stockman a white man.
So, what exactly is Dragon's Curse and should i be interested in it enough to buy it? I honestly can't recall ever hearing about the game.
Starfox 64 is a must own.

Damn you guys! Now I've got the music for the goddamn first-area overworld stuck in my head!
Curse you Nintendo/Konami and your dragging up of cruddy games with impossible-to-forget-music that only reminds me of their horror!
I'm gonna go buy Starfox and hope that cleanses the soul a bit.

I didn't know that. Wow. Wikipedia rocks.
I had a neighbor who worked for LJN and got to play GI Joe for NES months before it was released to Nintendo power. The games all had basic white labels on them written in marker.

Wow man. I don't see why people hate the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game so much. I LOVED that game so much. As for Don being slow.... So what? Most bosses could be beat w/ him by just jumping over them at max height and attacking down. He rocked.
As for hard... That dam level was pretty hard. After that the game was still hard but I liked it. I just had trouble swimming through the electric crap on the dam level. Other than that I did pretty good at the game. I never beat it but I did get near the end many times. If I had kept playing it, I might have beat it but usually I'd play, then a friend would play, then I, then a friend... And we ended up doing a lot of other games. I had like 30 NES games and liked all of them so...
