From Major Nelson (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/03/20/video-marketplace-factoids-and-top-downloads-for-week-of-3-12.aspx)...

Did you know:

-Within four months of launching, Xbox LIVE has become the number one online distributor of television and feature film content in the living room where it's most easy for consumers to access.

-In the same four months, the service has quickly become the number two online distributor of television and feature film content, second to iTunes.

-Is currently the ONLY online distributor of major feature films and television programming in high definition (HD) resolution.

-The service is a breakout success, with double-digit, month-over-month growth since launching.

-Monthly downloads from Xbox LIVE went up 400 percent since the service launched in November.
That's some impressive facts right there.

Wow!

I've watched quite a few rental HD movies off of the 360. It is quite nice. It takes about a half-hour before the movie is watchable, during which time I usually play some Live Arcade game (since it downloads in the background while playing a game). Also, it takes more than a half-hour to hop in the car, head to blockbuster, find a movie, deal with the register biscuit, and get home again.

Ive been using it, but really wish it was about 50% of the current price. At that price I would feel it was a good deal, and use it probably more than twice as much.

You know what would make the service better? A way to keep all the stuff you actually own. The 120GB HDD will help, but it would be nice if there was a way to burn it to a dvd that played only on a 360. Sure that would leave it open to hackers but I don't think they'd have much to worry about.

What other online distributors of "television and movies in the living room" are there? It isn't a criticism, I'm really asking, because I'm not aware of any. Though, digital cable and satellite's on-demand features are much quicker. That is the primary reason I haven't rented anything yet, I'd essentially have to rent it the day before I wanted to watch it, and then leave my 360 on while it's downloading.

I think Amazon.com sells online movies. Something tells me that WalMart also sells online movies, or at least plans to.

After having used the 360 video marketplace, I wouldn't rent again. I also purchased some shows (Enterprise in HD), just to check out the quality. I've even picked up free shows of South Park and Skyland.

A bigger hard drive would be nice, but I'm not chomping at the bit for it. If I want to watch something again, I'll download it. It really does not take long.

Unlike iTunes, it will actually let you redownload your stuff. iTunes will not, you are on your own to back your stuff up.

I actually like it the XBOX LIVE way, where if my HD goes tits up I can just redownload everything with no worries.

I don't think there's a comparable service yet to what the 360 has here, where you can download a show/movie and play it on your TV. Well, without actually connecting your PC to your TV, which most people don't know how to do anyway.

Now that they have all this, now its time to get more content faster. Also, they need to drop the price on TV shows. I just feel ripped off when I rent a TV show on Xbox live. They need to half the price. IMO

Yea, sorry. Didnt mean rent, but I am talking about season to season. I dont buy one or two episodes I get a season of something and for me to only play it on the xbox I htink it needs to be a little cheaper.

Still no Outside USB storage...what is this shit? They could at LEAST let you use an External Drive for the movies and TV.

Not in the living room though. iTunes has them beat when it comes to digital distribution in general. But they're essentially saying they're the number one set-top box that distributes movies and television shows through the internet. As far as I know, they're the only ones who do that.

It really does not take long.

In my experience, download rates on XBOX Live can vary heavily. It took forever and a day to download the free episode of South Park, but when I downloaded the Superman demo (I think it weighted in at around 1gb) it took very little time at all.

I suppose that's why they are claiming to be the #1 service for the living room.

They compare themselves to iTunes here.

It would make a lot of sense if I could watch the downloaded movies/shows on a Zune as iTunes people watch movies/shown on their iPods.

You're telling me. I've been doing a lot of album ripping and downloading the past few days. Every time I flip to the video section, it's empty and has me wondering each and every time when I'll be able to view shows and movies on the device. I'm hoping this is part of the spring Live update.

Umm... what about On Demand with the likes of Time Warner or Cablevision, it is technically streaming movies to your Set top box through the internet isn't it?

Kamalot

That would be something if the 360 video service was more popular than OnDemand services.

I think I know the reason for the timing of this announcement...
Apple has started shipping their AppleTV set top boxes. Microsoft probably only has a short window where they will be number one in the livingroom.

I certainly don't see Apple taking over the living room. I just don't.

Amazon and TIVO just launched a service that is similar, although they don't have TV shows yet(at least ones downloadable to the TIVO). I tried it the other night and their selection is odd and most new movies aren't rentable but only purchaseable. Its not bad overall but the video is a little odd, in a fast moving scene there is some terrible "ghosting" very prevalent on scenes with light backgrounds...

Oh yeah if you add your TIVO to their unbox service you get a $15 credit, until April 30th... http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_4526112_1/104-2940569-9141557?ie=UTF8&pf%5Frd%5Ft=201&docId=1000063051&pf%5Frd%5Fm=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf%5Frd%5Fp=278754301&pf%5Frd%5Fs=special-offers-1&pf%5Frd%5Fr=0JK6JCYPA4P2FKFW7710&pf%5Frd%5Fi=B000MR1V22

It seems like after all their previous failed attempts (UltimateTV) and good-but-not-widely-adopted attempts (Media Center), MS might have finally found the magic bullet to get the foothold into the all-in-one living room appliance that everyone in the set-top electronics industry has been trying to establish for years now.

Of course, it's too early to call it as such; but if the Zephyr 360 comes out with full IPTV and DVR support, AND if IPTV providers start offering bundle deals on a service/IPTV-enabled 360 bundle, then MS might finally have all the pieces in place to actually bring the idea to successful fruition.

They're so close to the tipping point that I'm almost leaning sideways, waiting for the media-floodgates to open.

Seriously though, I'm uncertain of the details which is why I ask, but it has to do with creating an American account and voila, you're in. Question though is do you just insert a bogus address and use a credit card from anywhere? Can't seem to find the answer to this one just yet.

Update: Nevermind, figured it out and it's easy peasy...not that I'd really do it anyway seeing as it's illegal and all ;)

I know, that's what I'm saying. You'd think that would be a point you'd want to brag about much more than being "#1." I mean, I know I'd rather being the only game in town than just the best.

It would make a lot of sense if I could watch the downloaded movies/shows on a Zune as iTunes people watch movies/shown on their iPods.

Stop being a dumbass, logic goes against the philosophy of the Zune. Balmer hate sense, Balmer smash puny synergy!

Hilariously, AppleTV started shipping today, so MS will need to spin their PR a bit more. I.E., Xbox LIVE is no longer number one in the living room, but the Xbox 360 has the largest install base.

I'm not personally a huge consumer of television/movie downloads, but I see this as a very important feature to a large and growing base of consumers. It helps keep the 360 console base growing as a result, makes the platform attractive to the entertainment industry, and keeps the product on the forefront of technology. All of that is good for me in what I care about, which is a console that thrives so I can play games!

So...good for MS! I'll watch my lousy SDTV broadcast television, my three movies a year, and play games! :)

Can't believe people enable this service to keep its high prices by actually using it.

For one, most TV shows found on Live can be had for free if you have OnDemand. Second, the movies are way overpriced and the new releases are usually weeks behind DVD, which I can always get at my local RedBox for $1 per night. So what if I have to drive 1/2 mile to my local McDonald's to get it?

I'm trying to figure out a way I can live without my $140+ a month Cable TV bill. If IPTV is reasonably priced (and available in my area) I just might bite.

Xerxes

I think it would kick a bit more ass going a little cheaper. I mean they have DVD vending machines for a buck and you get to keep it longer than 24 hours or whatever. $4 bucks(think that how many points it converts to) seems a bit old school I guess. I'd even roll with $2 bucks. Also, I need fuller selection and more of the HD movies. It's getting there but one night it struck me that I wanted to watch Wedding Crashers. I pop on to live hoping they'll have it and nope. Make it big dammit.
