The crew at Twisted Monkey (http://www.twistedmonkey.net) have posted an interview with Kevin Bachus of Infinium Labs (http://www.twistedmonkey.net/index.php/2005/06/08/twistedmonkey-interview-infiniums-kevin-bachus-part-1/#more-196), where they discuss the Phantom console and the public perception of their fledgling company.

At this point I’d say we’re kind of at the goal line. I joined the company about a year and a half ago and at that time the company was started by a couple folks down in Florida who had experience with the networking side of the tech industry and kind of said, “Well gee with all this capacity that’s out there, people being on broadband all the time, datacenters sitting idle, why is it that I have to go out to BestBuy every time I want to buy a video game? Why isn’t there a service that let’s me get games over an Internet connection?” And of course it’s a question that we in the game industry have been asking for a long time as well. What I find interesting is that they claim that they're creating a service, not a console - giving us a slightly better idea of what they're trying to achieve with the Phantom.

I thought their plan was Take the money and run.

Ahh, Kama beat me to it. Although the phantom does look better than the 360, I'll give them that.

BTW link fixed.

*Evil cackle* I'll love to see who ends up buying one.

I seriously doubt there will ever be one. This whole thing is just a pipe dream.

One of the reasons that this will not succeed is that it is meant to play PC games yet can not be upgraded. Lack of upgrades are okay for consoles, as the games can be fully optimized to take advantage of the given hardware, thus giving the systems a longer life than they would otherwise have. With the Phantom, games will not be optimized in the same way, as it will supposedly play regular PC games, which typically do not take full advantage of hardware as they have to account for thousands of different PC combinations that are constantly being upgraded and changed. Thus, a new Phantom is bound to be left in the dust around the two to three year mark, when new PC titles might not work on the damn thing at all. So, just buy a damn PC.

[Of course, none of this is revelant considering the people behind this thing seem shady at best and kind of come off like douche bags.]

My guess is that the Phantom itself will be just a brand of PC and the real product will be the streaming content service which will work with any PC.

I really don't see too many devs or publishers signing on board for this. Streaming games is hard

Didn't Infinium say something along the lines of they don't think the Phantom will come out? I remember reading that somewhere in the last few months. I hope it wasn't just something I dreamt up.

This is a joke that has far better legs than I ever imagined.
