More than just Romans in Space, Mythic Entertainments Imperator is shaping up to be what could be the sci-fi hit of the next MMO generation. With that, Vox Plebis has some left over E3 footage they have edited into a decent trailer showing off some of the combat and gameplay. Definately worth checking out.

I really hope mythic is keeping the features that make this game worth playing secret until a later date. Cause I gotta say that right now this is looking a hell of a lot like Anarchy Online with a better game engine. And AO is free for a year if you signed up at the right time...

The old range weapon combat where you are not even pointed at the enemy or slow ass timer system that was used in AO really hurt its appeal when it came out like what 4 or 5 years ago? Today it's simply silly.

I just hope this game is good, though with my recent experiences (and past ones to be honest), I cant say that I'm very hopeful.

I agree with Klade. I spent too much time on my free AO account, and I see striking similarities between the landscaping in AO and this. Especially with the grated metal flooring and ranged weapon combat. And the combat seems like it's the same as AO, if not most other MMOs in that you just stand there exchanging blows. I don't totally want to sound like a nay-sayer, though. I'm still interested in trying the beta, since my roots are in sci-fi, err speculative fiction.

I can say I was more interested in the music than what was going on in the game. And why, exactly, did they feel the need to slowly rotate around the overly saturated chick? Okay, you can model one cyberpunk looking girl, 'grats.

Finally, who the hell tries to shoot something when in melee combat? If some monster is ripping at me with claws and teeth, I'd rather have a sword or something else. Just standing there and taking aim with a pistol seems really dumb.

It's a pity, I was interested when I read about this concept, this trailer has just lowered my curiosity.

Ouch-- this trailer was a disaster, almost a parody of the last-gen MMO.

The guy's standing there, shooting sort of off to the side of monster while the monster claws him. Damage numbers fly in the air. Words continually spring up in the middle of the world, like "you can't use that ability while moving" and "that ability is not ready yet".

This is going to need a Tabula Rasa sized overhaul. That, or just cancel it. I can't believe anyone, let alone a company with as respectable a start as Mythic, would put out something this behind the times.

They're still releasing updates to their first game. What do you think their attitude is on this?

And on that note, why don't I see anyone questioning Sony's contsant release of new expansions for EQ? I'm not saying it probably doesn't happen...but I've never seen it...

Considering it's a guy with a camcorder, filming images being projected on a wall, I'm not sure what you were expecting. Mythic didn't release this, a fan did.

Uhm, where do you want the words to appear if your ability isn't ready to be used again, or if you are too close to a creature to use an ability? Does placing them where they are easy to read, somehow ruin the game?

For people who've never seen the game first hand, I'm suprised at how many naysayers there are.

My opinion is shared by people who have seen the game first hand-- I just talked with them about it over lunch. :)

Where do I want the words to appear if my ability hasn't recharged? How about nowhere? City of Heroes already solved that problem quite well-- just steal the solution if you haven't got a better one.

That's a small problem, though. Much worse is the outdated combat system. That sort of thing was fine with Anarchy Online, but it's not okay any more. This game is going to flop, and hard.
