Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&refer=conews&tkr=NTDOY:US&sid=akC4ohHFOXS4) is reporting that Sony has shipped two thirds fewer PSPs than Nintendo has of their DS.

March 14 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's biggest maker of game consoles, shipped 5 million PlayStation Portable machines in Japan by the end of January, lagging behind Nintendo Co.'s DS handheld devices by about three to one.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s spokesman, Satoshi Fukuoka, gave the PSP shipment numbers in a phone interview today, confirming an earlier report by the Nikkei newspaper. Both the DS and PSP went on sale in Japan in December 2004.

Nintendo, the world's biggest maker of handheld players, has shipped 14.4 million DS units in Japan by the end of 2006, the Kyoto-based company said, giving its latest available figures.

Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer is facing declining profit for the group because of losses at the game unit on costs related to the PlayStation 3 and slower-than-expected PSP sales. The company is losing market share to Nintendo's DS, which attracts users with the help of a touch-sensitive screen and games that let them play Frisbee with virtual pets.

Incredible turn of events.. It blows me away to think that modern manufacturing can produce 14.4 million of identical little plastic boxes stuffed with electronics. Exciting times, chaps.

You know, my local store has not be able to keep DS Lites in stock... and seem to be abandoning the PSP all together (the only one they have had in weeks is their display model, marked as "Clearance: $100"). But reliably, the one handheld you can get there is a GBA Micro. They have a few dozen of those that haven't moved since the product launched. They even have a bunch of those Famicom models. Has anyone actually bought one of these things?

Between the Gradius Collection and Metal Slug Anthology, I might just have to dust off the old emulation machine.

Anyone know of any extended-life battery for purchase? Back when I last played the PSP, the short battery life was one thing that bothered me.

Well, let's not blow this story out of proportion - our store, for example, has plenty of DS' in stock, and in most of the vailable colors (Black, White, Pink).

It's just that the unpresidented demand of the PSP on a global level, has left Japan with fewer units. That's all.

If the news was "The DS is outselling the PSP" then it would be "the sun rose this morning".

However, showing that Sony has about 25% of the marketshare is a little bit more significant.

How are you guys going to flame the guy when he quotes an article from fucking Bloomberg? He added absolutely nothing to the article, no opinion, no anything and yet the flames rage on. Get a fucking grip, his job is to post news and he did just that. Do most of us know this already, sure. Does that make it any less newsworthy, not so much. If fit had quoted some offbeat blog from some asshat analyst than flame on, but hello fucking BLOOMBERG. OMFGWTFBBQ is wrong with you peoples sometimes?

The company is losing market share to Nintendo's DS, which attracts users with the help of a touch-sensitive screen and games that let them play Frisbee with virtual pets.

You know, I almost made fun of the fact that one of the two selling points they referenced for the DS is Nintendogs, but then I thought about it... Just like Wii Sports Bowling seems to be a gateway game to a wider audience, I remember all the fuss about Nintendogs when it came out (have a couple nieces who begged for a DS specifically for that game), and that may just have been the title that pushed the DS over the tipping point past the PSP and started it's dominance avalanche up until this point.

Never really cared for the game myself, but Nintendo certainly was able to leverage the title to greatly contribute to their overall strategy of branching out to non-traditional gamers.

This isn't exactly unknown information. the only real reason to post this is just to stir up the local fanboys some more, for yet another round of idiotic me-too bullshit. "HUR HUR PS3 is TEH LAME! HUR!"

What's interesting is that whenever this gets brought up, of course no one bothers to point out that the device still outsells every other console on the Japanese market except the DS, including home consoles. More than the Wii, the PS3, PS2, Xbox, any of it.

the sky is blue?

/gasp

Technically its not... its purple

The sky appears blue for a combination of two reasons.

Different frequencies of light (in other words different colors) are scattered differently.

Higher frequencies (blue and purple) are more easily scattered and thus bounce around in all different directions more than lower frequencies (red or orange) do.

The scattering of high frequencies alone would cause the sky to appear blue and purple, but our eyes work better at frequencies near the middle of the spectrum (yellow and green).

Since the color blue is closer to yellow or green than purple is, the sky we see appears blue.

The difference is, on Bloomberg, and to a lot of the mainstream media, the DS outselling the PSP by 3:1 in Japan is news. Here, it's not. It's common knowledge.

Has anyone actually bought one of these things?Wait.... If the store, in your own words, "seem[s] to be abandoning the PSP all together" by apparently not restocking it and trying to get rid of the floor model. But isn't in trying to do anything to get rid of the GBM, doesn't that mean that they are selling?

I mean the merchandiser can return unsold items to the distributer to get their money back. Or could slash the price on the units to get them sold so they can free up the shelf space.

I still fail to see how this is not newsworthy. If nothing else it shows that even the mainstream media is picking up on how bad the PSP is getting beat by the DS. And we aren't talking mainstream media here, we are talking Bloomberg, which isn't exactly small fries.

I just don't get all the flaming that goes around here when someone posts a simple news item, regardless the system. The guy (or girl) is doing what he is supposed to be doing, without comment even.

I think your language is a bit wonky. According to your text they've sold two thirds, not a third. The article text says 1/3. Which is to say 5 million, which I guess to them is terrible.

Personally, it just seems like telling us something we already know. The fact that Bloomberg is reporting it doesn't really strike me as newsworthy itself, but that's subjective. Bloomberg could just as easily report that the PSP has outsold the 360 by 12:1 in Japan. Would it be just as true? Yep. Would it be newsworthy to a site that caters to a community that would already be familiar with that information? Not really in my opinion.

How did the 360 do in Japan last month anyways. If it keeps the 5K + units it was shipping post Blue Dragon up, im actually rather impressed.

So, what this article is saying is that Sony jumped from about a 0% market share in the handheld gaming category (ignoring cellphones) to about a 25% market share in just a couple of years? Wow, not too shabby.
All this spinning is making me dizzy.

Compared to other people, Sega, Nokia, who have tried to take on Nintendo in the handheld market(shit even cell phones). Sony has done better than most people would have expected. They have sold what close to 15 million world-wide? This reminds me of the SONY FANBOYS who said that the Xbox was a failure because it sold less than the PS2. When you go up against a two ton Gorilla, is it a failure if you manage to limp away alive to fight again?

LOL! How did I defend Sony by what I said? I don't own a PSP, nor do I have any interest in getting one any time soon. I just don't know why we need a "DS IS OUTSELLING PSP IN JAPAN" or "DS SHIPPING MORE UNITS THAN PSP IN JAPAN". All this is known, it's just flame bait at this point.

Why not post something interesting, like Mark Rein standing up for Sony at GI.biz? Or the new game from Koei that uses ONLY the Nunchuck?
