Nevrax sends along word that their MMORPG, The Saga of Ryzom (http://www.ryzom.com), is getting an expansion pack, The Ryzom Ring, due this fall.

Nevrax, developer of The Saga of Ryzom, the ground breaking massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), announced a new expansion to The Saga of Ryzom entitled The Ryzom Ring, first presented at the recent E3 Expo in Los Angeles, California.

The Ryzom Ring is a set of tools for editing and sharing player-made “maps” that are customizable with terrain, monsters and NPCs all run by individual players. Maps can be integrated directly into The Saga of Ryzom world of Atys, where thousands of other players can experience one person’s handiwork, or kept as a private sanctuary only accessible to a select few. Maps can be made exclusive to player guilds or select friends while running their own invasions or events.

“Our hope for The Ryzom Ring is that it will bring back the power to the players,” said David Cohen Corval, CEO of Nevrax and creator of The Saga of Ryzom. “The Ryzom Ring will empower individuals to create their own adventures and lands and to share them. The only true limitations will be their own imaginations“.

Player maps will be hosted on Nevrax’s servers and developed with tools that have a point-and-click interface. Nevrax plans the first phase of the tools to be easy enough to use that even the most inexperienced MMG player can create content with ease.

“One of our goals is not only to make the players be truly a part of the world of Atys by giving them the tools to create their own areas, but also to make it easy and fun to do so,” continued Cohen Corval. “We believe that the player-empowering nature of The Ryzom Ring is ground-breaking and we hope it will change the way MMGs are played forever.”

The Ryzom Ring is currently scheduled to ship in Winter 2005/2006.

I reviewed this game when I was still writing for Adrenaline Vault. Very high on concept, and by that token it is one of the coolest MMoRPG's ever coded. In terms of gameplay, it is roughly as painful as Lineage 2 to suffer through. No content at all, just endless grind from lvl 1 onwards, and there's 250 levels all told per skill you're grinding, so you can imagine how endless it is...

Sounds like a cool idea to let the players setup maps. This might make it easyer to explote the game. i can see then putting in a whole bunch of easy npc to grin off of. :(

I played it, was to write a review of it, but really had a hard time with the game. The crafting was great. Very cool concept and people who like to craft would love it and all the intricacies. There is no class per say - only how you choose to take your character. I enjoyed that freedom. The problem was/is - I had no clue where to go and what to do. If you like to explore and do your own things, this game is for you. Otherwise if you like lots of quests and stuff - well, forget it. Lots of good stuff here, but I like a little more direction. Zombosis is right, level grinding is painful after awhile.

I played this for the 14 day demo they offered. It was the second MMO I played, fresh off the open-beta for WoW. I wasn't sure what the hell to do, but I figured out how to craft and farm pretty easily. Months later, and after a few other MMO beta-tests, I tried the free trial again (I switched banks) and absolutely loved it. I still didn't know where the hell to go, and I never really saw much more than desert, but I really liked how all of the armor and swords and creatures looked; a perfect blend of sci-fi and fantasy IMO. And the crafting was awesome. I don't know, if I was willing to sink the time and money in to an MMO, I would probably try this out. But I can't because I'm a full-time student and have a copy of Guild Wars staring me in the face. Oh, this weekend is going to hell on my comp.
