Stay awhile for some grand news. Pro-G (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/02-03-2007-4909.html) sends word that System 3 is finally bringing back a game old farts like myself get misty eyed about. Yes, Impossible Mission is making a return to a number of systems with updated graphics (as well as original graphics/gameplay modes). The PSP version has a nice feature, being able to wirelessly send a full copy of the game to another PSP, so friends can try it out.

The original game was released 25 years ago for the Commodore 64 and was the first game to use real synthesised speech. It also included a random game-map system which ensured no two games were the same.

System 3 feels that the original still stands the test of time, but has chosen to remake the game with brand new graphics and sound to appeal to a new audience. The game has been re-written from the ground up but the gameplay remains loyal to the original, as does the random map generation.

Players will have three main characters to choose from and three game modes: new, original and purist - a hybrid mode with the original gameplay using the updated graphics.

In Impossible Mission players take on the role of a secret agent who must stop the evil genius Professor Elvin Atombender who has been tampering with National Security computers. It's now a race against time and you'll have to penetrate his base and recover parts of the system password, all while avoiding deadly robots.

Oh man. I *loved* this game on the c64, and played it for countless hours.

Staaaaay awhile... Staaaaaaaaaay forever!

Destroy him, my robots!

Hopefully this one won't live up to the title as well as its predecessor, which literally couldn't be beaten.

I linked to a story about this the other day in the Bruce Lee thread. :D

<sigh> So many happy memories from my C64... man, it seems like back then the games were so much more FUN and light-hearted than they are now. Playing most games nowadays, I always feel this crushing burden of expectations to succeed; even playing Phoenix Wright, I feel guilty (no pun intended) when I make the wrong choices and lose the case for my client. Playing Impossible Mission on the C64, I watched my little spy guy drop down an elevator shaft a hundred times just to hear his pathetic little scream, and never felt the least twinge of guilt. :)

I think only the 7800 (ntsc, pal was ok?) and Speccy versions were actually impossible, due to bugs (piece(s) hidden in computer terminals that weren't searchable)

I have seen it beaten once. My brother actually beat it. It showed the mad professor in his little room, and he screamed...no...noooo.nooooo.

I personally found this game to be the hardest game I have ever played. Playing it on emulation I still find it tough!

Ok, hands up everyone who clicked on this thread so they could post "Stay a while, staaaay forever!" only to realise that everyone else had already had the same idea?

Doh! A friend actually told me about this a little while ago. I could have made this my first news thread. I didn't have a c64 but I did play the game on my Apple II. It was well ported.

Right you are, mondain98. Time has clouded my memory. Or maybe it was my mad rush to get the "stay a while" quote in before everyone else :)

Hell yeah, Monetzuma's Revenge was awesome. Space Taxi was another favorite of mine.

I can't imagine how many times I played through this game on the C64. I actually think the jumping somersault was one of my favorite parts of the game. I'm hoping that they add some extra gameplay into the mix as well as having the classic mode. Some new robots and puzzles would be nice. As long as they don't try to expand the gameplay into 3D, I'll be looking forward to this one. <BUTTERFLY>

Space Taxi was another classic. "Hey Taxi! Pad 2 please." I still can't help saying that whenever I see a cab.

<raises hand> :o

BTW, the game might have been impossible on some systems, but not the C64 one. Once I figured out how to do it, I finished the game 9 times out of 10 from then on. Hope this plays well, I am stoked :)

I too loved this game (along with Space Taxi & M.U.L.E.) and will be interested in picking it up. I played this in emulation a while back and it didn't quite seem the same without the single joystick with the button on top cramping my hand to all hell.

The game gave you twenty four hours to beat it and every time you died I believe you lost ten minutes (I think) but you died ALOT! Each room had robots with different movement schemes and platforms that were different every game. Then once you found all of the clues (data?) you had to piece them together, 4 at a time, messing with orientation and color. Which also took awhile. Once you did all that, you beat the game! Seems to me it would take a good couple of hours to beat it which I must confess ( :D ) I did a couple of times.
