Introversion Software confirmed rumors that it is working on a multiplayer version of Darwinia. Multiwinia will combine elements of Darwinia, with the addition of multiplayer support which will enable both co-operative and competitive battles between massive Darwinian armies.

"We've created a new formation mode which will let you organise your Darwinians into ranks to create massive armies. In formation they'll have greater firepower in the direction they're facing, but virtually none from either sides or behind. It's going to get pretty messy, requiring a whole new set of tactical skills from the gamer."More Multiwinia details (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=40988) over at WorthPlaying.

Scheduled for 2008, and probably not free, not even for Darwinia owners.

I may actually pick this one up, I buy Introversion games...but I have yet to like one that I have purchased.

I'm wondering what these new versions of darwinia mean to us whom have owned the game for a while. Are the Vista Darwinia "upgrades" going to be downloaded in an update from steam? Am I going to have to buy "multiwinia" even though I've owned darwinia since US launch?

I still rather like the idea; but i'm hoping it's not introversion finding a way to get more money out of me.

In a previous news (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25559), Introversion hinted they were moving to the console space.

Multiplayer is definitely a move in the right direction.

Yes to the former, but probably no to the latter. Darwinia retail came with no form of unique identification which isn't so good when it comes to MP.

Multiwinia should be interesting.
Also, does Darwinia sort of remind anyone else of Cannon Fodder?
