The media monster IGN has an extremely detailed interview with the folks at Simutronics about their upcoming MMORPG, Hero's Journey. In it, they talk about why nearly two decades of game design experience will help make Hero's Journey truly different from other MMOs.

So, it's just Guild Wars, with more races. That makes me want to pay a subscription, really it does.

Yeah, its becoming an overload now. I'm not going to list them, because it would take so long, but there are so many out there, and so many the same.
The reality is, people will choose one or two, and stick with them. You have to really stand out to get attention. And the market is small, most people don't want to pay monthly to play a game. Why don't they focus on women and other people who don't traditionally play games? They would have an untapped market right there.

They tried that with Sims Online. People decided to make brothels, we can't trust commoners to play online properly, we have enough of that already. </elitest snob>

You can hardly compare the Sims Online to what Simutronics is doing and has done. They've been using the volunteer GM model in their games for years without problems. They will manage Hero's Journey in the same successful way I am sure.

I was explaining to Smith why tapping the untapped is probably a bad thing.
