Found this side by side picture (http://cgi.rbentley.plus.com/txb/Xbox360_vs_Xbox.jpg) of the XBox 360 and the XBox.
That's some serious chrome on the drive there. Overall, I like it. It's grown on me since it was first revealed.

Definitely slicker looking than the old one.
Revolution is still the slickest looking next gen box.
I kinda like the look of all three. Its not that important to me though, I'd have a lump of crap in my lounge if it played good enough games.

Boy...if I had some free time this weekend, I'd shit on my XBox, cover it in ceran wrap, ship it to your house, and make you play KOTOR II in your lounge, as I gleefully watched from a webcam. :D
Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy as it is.

Isn't putting KOTOR II in a XBox paramount to shitting on it in the first place?

The more I see of the 360, the more its design grows on me. I still cringe every time MS mentions the 'inhale' concept, but I am feeling better and better about having this box sitting by my TV. The only doubts I still have is whether or not MS will be able to keep the damn thing cool enough. I mean, that thing is tiny considering the hardware that is crammed into it.
I also hope that the chrome is actually chrome, and not that shitty plastic coating that is all too common throughout the hardware world these days.

What drives me nuts is the harping on and on about the RING OF FRICKIN' LIGHT aka the power button. Sure, it looks nice and green and shiny when it's on, but the amount of time they devoted to it in the Our Colony video and the MTV crapfest just got under my skin for some reason. Like having a green light that is slightly nicer looking than the one on your current system is somehow a selling point for a game system.

Don't hold your breath. I'm sure it'll end up being that crappy plastic stuff.

Looks much nicer than in all those overlighted and bright photos/renders. Nice to see it in a normally lighted environment for once.
I still don't like the look of it all that much, and I hate the whole Xbox rebranding. The new logo sucks so much compared to the old stuff... bleh. Still, it's cooler than the crapfest that is the PS3 design... argh.

I can't wait to sit in front of the ring light!!!!!!!!!!!! woot!
The front is kinda busy looking. They should hid the memory card slots under a flap or something. Make the dvd players a slot loading one. Get rid of that other button or that other weird panel.
Anyway it will look good next to the toaster and blender.

haha, thing is I probably would... I haven't played KOTOR II yet, despite loving the first one. I'll be picking it up for my PC sometime soonish though, so on second though I might pass...

Ehh. It looks like a 5 1/4" CD drive removed from a PC.

Don't blame MS - product design people and such really think like that. Go to your local university and hang out around some art & design majors. Sure it's awfully silly to hear, but they conceptualize designs with thought processes like that.
Bigger than I thought...
I'll still get one, though...

fat ass big it is...the 360 looks absolutely horrendous. it has no design continuity. chrome drive, 2 memory slots that are blandly labeled, and an oversized power button that takes 1/3 space of the front bezel. Add to all this a shape that looks deformed - squeezed on both sides. typical look of a low grade oem electronics product sold at Walmart.
Fuckin ugly.

Why is this thing standing on its end whenever it is shown? Is this the age when consoles learned to stand upright and walk from the primordeal ooze? I didn't even know a console lying down was a problem.
I bet it is a potentcy thing.

Goddamn! You are RIGHT!
And it is still 15x better looking than the abomination that is the PS3!
Me? I’m interested in what it will put on my screen, not how it looks under my projector.

Yep. You are spot on. It is amazing that Microsoft and Sony couldn't design something that looks better than a black CD drive with a blue light. I'm downright shocked.

It's really hard to make a clean, elegant looking white design. Look at the PSP. It looks pretty good in black, but a white material would bring out the number of buttons spread all over it. It's difficult to balance the space that white reveals.

The PS3 has the worst design, by far, this coming generation. Waffles should go in that machine. The Revolution is definitely the best looking. The 360 is somewhere in between. It still amazes me just how much the machine looks like the dell entry-level internet boxes.
No one has talked about the size of the PS3. To me that thing looks freaking huge. I wonder if the japanese are gonna bitch about a sony product being too big to fit in their house or whatever.

Yep, the PS3 is huge - bigger than the original Xbox in some dimensions.
No, the Japanese are not going to ignore the product because of its size. That was always a BS argument.

No shit. It was a rumour spread by people as an excuse to explain why the XBOX was not selling in Japan. Well guess what - the XBOX did not sell in Japan because it has next to no games that would even slightly appeal to the average Japanese gamer. MS is certainly making considerable efforts to remedy that in the coming generation, and they do stand to grab a noticeably larger chunk of the market. However, considering they only managed 0.5 percent of the Japanese market this time around, I do not expect them to blow us away. I highly doubt that MS will capture more than 10 percent.

To be fair, I think black CD drives look really spiffy.

you mean tantamount

I like the white, but having it stand on end? I don't get that. It's as frivolous as the face plates. Completely irrelevant, just to try and make it seem so different from the old one. And I hate having to try and put dvds in sideways.

No, they'll probably build a shrine around it in their home.
And I can't wait to hear Sony fanboys talking about how the XBOX 360 is too small. Can't friggin wait.

On this size argument, big isn't bad, but really small and easy to carry around is great(cube with the built-in handle). Taking the cube somewhere was easy, and there was no fear about damaging the hard drive, etc. I think the big N made a few sales based on that design. Best looking one of this generation, imho, except if you're trying to put it in a standard rack. :-) Fits in a stand rack right along side of a ps2 just fine, though.
360 looks like a wannabe apple design, kind of sad. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I suppose.

According to MS flacks, Japanese consumers surveyed thought that only two companies could have designed the 360, Apple or Sony. I'd like to know why Sony isn't selling any of these apparently well-designed products in the US.
