Looks like a groups of hackers are claiming to have a ripped and playable version of the downloadable PS3 game, Gripshift. MaxConsole.net has the scoop (http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=14679).The well known hacking group "PDX" has released the first ever Playstation store game rip to the web, the name of the game is Gripshift. The readme file states it is playable on the PS3 by using "ps3.proxyserver." In another readme file the same group also stated that the PS3 is MORE buggy than the Xbox 360...How much does security help or hurt a console's chances at being #1?

How much does security help or hurt a console's chances at being #1?
It has no effect, unless the security is obtrusive or offensive (Starforce), in which case it actually becomes a problem. On the whole, piracy isn't even a relavent issue in the major markets (USA, western Europe, Japan); and in minor markets (Hong Kong, China, Russia, Thailand... etc) you aren't going to sell enough games to make a (inevitably failed) protection system worth while.
And before anyone says it: Piracy didn't kill the Dreamcast; Sega did and Sony helped them along.

I agree with this statement 100%

If anything, piracy helps consoles, just like piracy built Microsoft's global PC empire.
Might help the console a bit but it sure as hell aint helping the game developers.

Also, piracy was very easy on the original XBOX, very hard on the Gamecube, but the XBOX had a higher rate of games per console sold. I don't think this is going to effect things much.

They did it to themself. The only ones to blame for negative sony news is sony.
As for a hacked system? They will just DRM/rootkit it with firmware and the norms will never know.

A lot of my friends bought modded xboxes to play all the retro games and eventually started buying xbox games when the xbox started to come out with good games. So in my select group, lack of security helped MS.

When he said retro, I think he meant SNES,SEGA,MAME and stuff like that on his xbox.

I think that's right, but it sure seems like a waste of effort, as all of that can easily be done on a PC. Why mess with a modded Xbox for that? Emulation via PC is easier.
As for Gripshift, I personally am of the opinion, backed by scads of hard evidence at this link...hee hee (http://www.friends.hosted.pl/redrim/Reading_Test.jpg), that piracy doesn't result in overall net losses, and may even succeed in growing the industry (though it can hurt particular developers, unfortunately).

XB and GC attach was pretty close. last time i checked they were both between 9 and 10, with a slight lead for MS. i'm sure they gained a bit of ground in attatch rate in 2007, since they stopped selling XB but continued to release a few software titles, but it was pretty close. in fact, even the PS2 was in the high 9 range last time i checked.

I know several people who bought modded xboxes with hundreds, if not thousands of roms pre-installed on the hard drive. So actually, it was much easier than the PC as it was ready to go. Plus, many people would prefer to play console games on their tv's rather than on the PC..
As to what effect piracy has on a console, I'd say probably not much. But like someone else pointed out, it can definitely be bad for developers (especially the smaller ones).

Piracy can be good for consoles, SOMETIMES.
In this case, no, it's quite bad. As it means the online store is not secure, and may lead to some companies not supporting it.

As an employee of Sidhe Interactive, the developer behind GripShift, any piracy will certainly affect us negatively. Having tracked piracy of our own and other developers games in the past, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it has a negative impact on sales. Its disappointing to see some people choose not to support the team of a game they play and enjoy by engaging in piracy.
As it happens, we can track online access by all users and reconcile that against legitimately authorised users of the game, so there will certainly be ramifications for those who decide to go down that path.

That's very true, PC emulation was always easier (anyone remember Bleem!), but I guess people like doing things like that @ the comfort of their couch, you also gotta remember people was also watching Divx movies on there regular xbox, so if you can do that why not do everything :D

Damm dude :/
This game is worth every penny (and lets face it it's not exactly a fortune) it costs to buy. Chin up fella, launch date coming up hopefully equals the home crowd giving you the treatment you deserve :)

Yeah, emulation is just icing on the cake for me. My Xbox makes a pretty damn nice Media Center (Obviously it can never even begin to compare against a real high end one), and I also did it so I could play my Xbox games while keeping the disks in their cases and out of harms way (The fact that my first Psychonauts copy got ruined only enforced that desire).
Plus, I have a delicious controller which works well for almost all systems (I use the Xbox controller for Arcade the 5-6 N64 games that run fine and are worth while, and a Dual Shock for the PS1 games on the same token). So yeah, I can't stand emulation on the PC, I needs me a TV, a good seat, and a controller that's well made.
...What, you say this thread was about a hacking? Uhhh, oh right.
Well, I certainly hope this doesn't harm the makers of the game too much (Seriously, people who go and try to make good games deserve reimbercement for their hard work), but I don't think this is all that bad news for Sony.

I agree, any hard work should be rewarding accordingly, but we all know eventually hackers (thats all they do) find away with anything. it just sucks Gripshift had to be the first

If I ever modded an xbox, it would be to play classics emulated on my widescreen tv. The original xbox was awesome, but once modded it was heavenly....or so I have heard. Music, movies (with a larger hd) and emulation made it a great system to play on. The same thing with the Dreamcast.

Ehm, they've never been playable until now (if these reports are true, I haven't investigated this).

Damn it! I was going to make a sarcastic dreamcast comment but the first dang reply beat me.
Console success? Eh, not much. Xbox was hacked pretty bad last gen but didn't seem to hurt it in any significant way. PC games, now that's a horse of a different color.

That's unfortunate, GripShift is actually a pretty fun game, and very much worth the $10 download price. It's pathetic what some people will do to avoid a rather trivial price like that.

Nope. Not yet. So far, the 360 marketplace & Live seem to be fairly safe from hackers. Hell, I don't even think there is a way to load unapproved icons or themes yet.

It wasn't the only issue, but piracy was a big factor in the death of the DC. It weighed on alot of other issues the DC had....like the EA decision not to support it.
A big factor is ease of the hack - someone said the original XBOX was easy to hack...which I disagree with. It required a mod chip & a DVD burner. The DC was hackable out of the box and pirated disks could be burned on any CD burner.
This is the reason Microsoft locked down the 360's internet access - piracy. IMO, it was reckless for Sony & Nintendo to open their consoles to the wild wild internet. If either of these consoles get 'one click' internet hacks - as easy as going to a site and downloading pirated games - it's going to kill developer support, real fast, in a big way.

Actually, you don't need a mod chip or DVD burner, you just need to turn a controller cord into a usb cord. I soft modded my Xbox to become my Media Center in my living room. Its very easy to send videos to it and play them there, away from my pc. Best move I ever made, as I stopped really using it for games before that.
