GameSpot is reporting (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/02/news_6126883.html) that the next card in the GeForce family will be introduced to the press on June 21.
According to VR-Zone, the new chip (codenamed G70) will be called GeForce 7800 GTX and boast some rather impressive (http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=2206) specs.

It's only an 8 pipe solution? Am I missing something?
Yes you are, thats vertex pipes, Geforce 6800 Ultra only has 6 vertex pipes. I think your thinking of pixel pipelines.

Excellent, every time a new top of the line card comes out the regular cards go down in price.

I wonder what price point these will come out at. Seems like every new generation of GPUs we see the price ceiling raised.

graphics cards have the dumbest naming convention ever.. i mean what happens when they go to another digit?
its like the console bit wars.. mario 128 etc but much worse
prefix prefix name acronym number suffix suffix

It will also, undoubtable, boast an impressively large pricepoint to boot!

yeah i've been waiting patiently for the current gen to drop in price too. unfortunately their prices are so high currently that many other people are doing the same thing i fear and their prices won't really drop much.
I'd be interested in getting a "value" current gen card like a 6600 gt but i'd really like to get some actual performance numbers and spec comparison and anadtech and co seem to be only interested in comparing the very top of the line cards against each other. anybody know of any sites that give a breakdown of all cards?

I'll probably go for a midrange option for my next computer, making sure it has the ability to add a second card for SLI-style gaming down the road. I haven't decided on NVIDIA or ATI yet. I tend to get whatever's best at the price point I'm looking for at the time.

100% agree. They desperately need to fucking simplify the naming of these things. I'm not a totally gonzo hardware nut, but I'd like to think I know my way around, but keeping track of all the different video card names within a single generation is just insane. It doesn't have to be this complicated, folks! >=[

The naming isn't for the hardcore (such as those who care about naming heh) but for the idiots in the store who are buying a card without even opening a web browser. The same people who are buying cards based on the crazy box art.

That's correct, things are given fancy names because fancy names sell better than mundane names. For example, a local news channel here in Raleigh has the "Doppler 5000" weather radar. When asked what the 5000 means, they said it meant nothing, but that it sounded "cooler" with the number at the end.
Companies have done the marketing research. "Sal's 9901-FX Ultra eXtreme GTS Turbographic Videoboard" is going to sell way better than "Joe's Video Card Version 5".

Unless, like apple, part of your company's schtick is simple and clean generational naming conventions, like ipod, imac, G5, etc. As sad as it sounds, it's one reason I like apple (I use a toshiba/Winxp, though).
