The Armchair Empire has posted some weekend reading with a retrospective (http://www.armchairempire.com/Features/story-telling-games.htm) that looks back at Sir Tech's original Wizardry game. The article spends much of its time discussing how the general lack of a story in the game actually made for a pretty good story, since players had to use their imagination more while exploring the Proving Grounds.

Man, that game brings back memories. We sank hundreds of hours into that game on my old Apple ][e.

I remember painstakingly mapping out each level on graph paper. It was the only way to make it through some of those mazes.

Vorpal bunnies ftw.

Mapping was a challenge and a half in that game, especially if you walked over a rotating floor. I still get a chuckle from the little cartoons they put in the instruction manual for the game. :)

And walking into walls would break your potions. Oh, the memories!

Latumofic! I was just talking about this the other day. With the rotating doors and trap floors, this was a BITCH to map. I remember though, getting my characters up to the Ninja class and whipping Werdna's ass all over the place :)

I loved that the two guys, Robert and Andrew, reversed their names for the hero Trebor and villian Werdna. So many things about this game are responsible for my love of games and my desire to work on them.
