Boomtown (http://www.boomtown.net/en_uk/) has posted a preview (http://rpg.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=8357) of the upcoming PC RPG, Hellgate: London. The title is being developed by Flagship Studios which is made up of many former Blizzard employees including those behind Diablo.

Here's a bit from the preview...

This is a 3D RPG that easily lives up to the graphical standards of the very latest FPS games, and which is an entirely new hybrid between single-player RPGs and MMORPGs.

ut it’s not about having the best aim. The developer does not want you to be dominated by the kid next door each and every time, just because he has time for 50 hours of gaming every week. Hellgate: London does what most RPGs do: it aims for you. Twitch reactions are prioritised lower than your ability to actually play the game. When you run around shooting all the nasty critters that appear in the streets, you will realise that building your character’s skills and selecting the right weapons are the most important things in this world.

The game looks pretty damn sweet.

i had a quick go on it at E3, it was pretty good. Looks like there is a lot of Deus Ex qualities about it, but a lot more freeform. The only thing that worried me was the random generation of maps.... some people love it, but I hate it personnale. The only game that it worked well for was Diablo 2, which coincentally some of the D2 dev team are working on this....

Time will tell :)

FPS RPG in a non MMOG... outstanding! And from the people who made Diablo, it sounds like it really can't go wrong. Is it going to be open-ended though (ala Morrowind)? It sounds like it, but the article never really came out and said it (unless I missed it).

It sounds like it will have a mini-MMOG part as well? It sounds like servers will be maintained by the company, which is too bad. I would prefer to run my own server to be honest.

Pretty sure you'll still be dominated by the 14 year olds with 50 hours of gametime a week no matter what.

Still sounds like a good game though and I'll be picking it up.

I'm really looking forward to this. There will always be linear shooters, it's nice to see someone innovating.

I'll definitely be picking this up.

This game looks awesome! If they can capture half of what I saw in a trailer, I'm buying this DAY ONE!

As long as they don't take out the coop at the last minute, I'm in. Why so down on random generated 3d maps? Last time I saw a game do that was Daggerfall, and what they're talking about here is much better, not just switching between a few tilesets.

Do you suppose there's any chance we'll be able to turn the auto-aim thing off? I still haven't finished the first level of Halo 2; it just pisses me off too much, and I get the impression this is going to be even more intrusive.
