Continuing their crusade against t3h h4x0rs, Blizzard has closed a whopping 53,928 Warcraft III accounts on Battle.net (http://www.battle.net/).
In keeping with our aggressive stance against cheating, we have permanently closed 53,928 Warcraft III accounts. 8,168 of the Warcraft III CD keys used with the now-closed accounts have been banned from ladder play for one month, and 3,331 more have been banned from ladder play permanently.Usually Blizzard patches WCIII right after banning cheaters. Here's hoping for 1.19.

Now what would be really cool if all developers of online capable games (or at least the major ones like Valve and Blizzard) would share their lists and banninate all of the cheaters across the board, regardless if they only cheated in one or all games. That would scare off a crapload of cheaters.

How? By IP? The only way banning across widely different games is going to happen is everyone getting onboard one unified system like Steam or Punkbuster.

Makes me want to reinstall. Good for any company that does anything about hacking.

Drop in the bucket. How about banning all the cheaters cd codes permanently from all play. Not this one month crap.
I love this game but can't play it online because of the rampant cheating. Hurray for blizzard for doing *something*, but when you're closing off 54,000 accounts every few months...I mean Christ. How many people play online regularly?

So by your logic, i take it that you wanted them to do nothing then?....

Good for them. Now a days its hard to find rts games that are followed up by patches and constant support like blizzard.

This is why I play online games on Xbox Live, and one reason I am happy to pay for a subscription fee. Subscription fee = bans actually matter (you get banned, you lose $50).
Unlike on PS2 games, or most non-MMORPG PC games, where it's quite easy to pick another name and hop right back in.

Yes, oh supreme interpreter of logic, I wanted them to do nothing. Or more. Lots more. Either one really.

Well most popular games use CD-Keys nowadays don't they? Or are there ones I don't know about?

Well, part of the issue with a CD key is that once the algorithm has been cracked and a key generator made, that means if some jerkoff out there happens to generate your key and cheats, let's say you get banned. You've little recourse except to call the developer in question and beg/plead your case. Which thankfully Blizzard handles some some grace.
Xbox Live on the other hand, unless they know your username/password, you're secure in that someone else can't get you banned on your own account.
