In Quake 4 the Strogg are quickly regrouping, however the Strogg’s planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time, you're not alone. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, and part of Earth’s next invasion wave. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal in this heroic and epic battle between worlds.

I dunno, I kind of would like them to change the whole "Rhino Squad" thing.
I can't help but think of the movie Death to Smoochie when I read that.

I wanna see a sci-fi game with a marine, tough-guy main character who goes by the name Squinty McMoisty.
That's a pretty cool looking Doom 3 mod, being done by one person!
...
What?
It's supposed to be a new/different game?!?
Oh...
Coulda fool'd me. :p

I was just gonna say, "I'm Matthew Kane? Man, my folks are gonna be pissed." :p
Why does it matter who the main character is in these 3D shooters? With all this technology, is it beyond us to be able to create our own characters? If you're toting all sorts of ridiculous hardware anyway, why not allow us to choose male or female leads? What suits we might actually choose to outfit in? How about some options with regards to armor (it can be simple, some makes you slower, others make you jump higher, etc.)?
I know, I know, the pendantic, ego-driven project leads can't conceive that gamers might actually be able to be creative and choose names other than 'BudKing420'.

Old-school story telling rule. Telling the story from a specific person's point of view.

Jumper: old-school story telling was old ten years ago. Unless the title of the game is the character's name (ala' "Max Payne" or "Duke Nukem"), it doesn't really matter who the protagonist is behind the trigger of said rocket launcher.

The trailer covers my doubts.
It's a very well done trailer.
I also like the idea of letting you become a Strogg later on. To me, Quake 4 looks good now, even though less than a month ago I was doubting with everyone else, it now looks diffrent enough from Prey and Doom 3 to have me intersted.

Some of us like a story, and character, behind our Shooter Du Jour.
"Old school" storytelling does not die.
Are you seriously suggesting Gordon Freeman doesn't matter because the game was named Half Life?

I too am very skeptical of this game. I can't believe they have outdoor scenes. As far as the site goes, yeah its a decent trailer.
However, the marine on their site looks like nerdy asshat. I hope that titanium nut-cup he's wearing will protect him from the strogos-nut-mashing machine.

Funny, I was just going to say I'm impressed they finally gave the Quake lead a name for once.
Also, they don't bother with the customization in the single player campaign because that's not a feature probably in high demand in focus groups. It's not an RPG, this is the heir to the granddaddy of true 3D FPS (and the breakthrough internet deathmatch game), they're going to stay fairly standard with regards to content I'd imagine.
Sides', customization is always done in multiplayer in the FPS genre anyways. With regards to single player, considering the game is first person, it's kind of pointless to make yourself a chick and dress yourself up. You'll never see anything and it's doubtful your character has many lines anyways.

Huh? There are plenty of "old-school" stories that don't follow this "rule."

nice plastic looking textures in a Doom 3-esque environment (drabby grey hallways, etc).

Being able to choose your character and name it is pretty damn far from turning the Doom III engine into an RPG. Don't be afraid of change.
Gordon Freeman in Half-Life is fine as a character. Alternately, the same story could have been told if you were able to choose your sex and/or name.
I'm surprised that those that have posted are against customization of something so minor as the player model and name in a genre that typically slaps the story on as a one-page liner note...

After the Quake Wars announcement, I find it very hard to get excited for this game.

Your guy in Quake 2 is named Bitterman. It's written on the drop-pod you start the games standing next to, even.
