Dark Corners of the Earth is based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, one of the most influential writers in the horror genre, and yet somehow one of the most obscure. Lovecraft’s stories deal with what’s since been labeled the Cthulhu Mythos. He wrote about men who were driven to destruction or madness by meddling with forces that they couldn’t begin to comprehend, in a universe populated by horrible dark gods and incomprehensible aliens. These weren’t the monsters and ghouls of 19th-century horror, which could be dispatched by a wooden stake or silver bullet; these were creatures that a human could not encounter without going insane.
From the word “go,” this isn’t the kind of FPS you may be used to. Dark Corners of the Earth is more immersive and less action-oriented than a lot of shooters, with no HUD, no crosshairs, and a heavy focus on puzzle-solving and investigation. You’ll need to unravel mysteries, outthink your enemies, and collect clues for Jack’s detective work. Particularly thorough gamers can hunt down hidden Mythos Points, the collection of which will unlock extra information and items.Check the full Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth preview (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=25663) over at WorthPlaying.

I pray to those dark gods that this game doesn't suck. I think the first time I heard about this game was 5+ years ago. That makes me a little nervous, but I'm crossing my fingers.

Hey, if this game is anywhere close to Undying, I'm already stoked.

pistol, shotgun, machinegun, chaingun, rocketlauncher.
Mark my words.
Cthulhu Mythos rules. I hope the game does it justice.

Heh, I just re-read 'The Dunwich Horror' yesterday. If the game is true to its roots, those types of weapons will be ineffectual against the horrors of the unknown.
Puzzle-solving, arcane knowledge and a dash of magic, all while cultivating a fine selection of phobias, chain-smoking, and stool obsession -- now that's what I call gaming! :D

I saw the video's, and the insanity meter thing looks pretty cool.

Neither machine guns, chain guns or rocket launchers existed when Lovecraft wrote. The game is set in the beginning of the XXth century so I do hope the developers are not that stupid to include modern weaponry.
There was a time I wouldn't believe this game will actually be released. As Cupelix said, it has been in developement for years.

Arcane rod, Elder Skull, Staff of Tyllitdhy, Old One's Skull, and Thorn of Cthulu then.
Is a machinegun by any other name still as deadly? We'll see.

Anyway, I'm *really* looking forward to this game. If its even close to Eternal Darkness I'll be satisfied. Damn that game was good.

The last preview I read about this said it had been pushed back to 2006. I really hope not, I want this game to come out and I want it to be excellent. I don't even care if it looks dated on its release, if this game can present an excellent or even a good Lovecraft-esque experience it'll rock me 15 ways to next Thursday week.

I want this game to come out as much as KamaItachi, however if it has been pushed back, there are reasons. I don't want another Vampire: Bloodlines.
No offence but there are a lot of instrumenal pieces like Call of Ktulu [sic]. It's far from unique or memorable.

It looks OK, but I love that screenshot of that gigantic freak splashing over the boat.

Um, in the first screenshot it looks like the player is reloading a freaking glock. So modern weaponry doesn't look too unlikely. :/

I remember talking to kathode about it. The delays are definitely for a good reason.

Agreed. Eternal Darkness really hit it on the head for me. This game looks to even surprass it assuming there's no glaring problems. I can't wait.

The Semi-Automatic Pistol was invented in the late 1800s. I've had this game reserved for more than a year, and it looks like it's finally getting close to completion.

Does anyone here remember the first videos that came out for this? They weren't even game engine videos as far as I know, just concept stuff. But goddamn did they look cool, especially one where a the first-person dude walked down into a cave-like area and found a hanged man, his body swaying to and fro with a great creaking rope noise, and a lantern around his neck that's throwing a cone of light around the cave. The hero goes up to procure the lamp, and the hanged man starts thrashing a bit. Super spooky. The best part was the FPS hands that actually went out to grab the lamp, close doors, push cabinets, etc. Unfortunately, they cut this sort of interaction.

Didn't they do that sort of stuff in Breakdown for the Xbox? I thought it seemed like a cool concept but apparently it just wasn't excecuted that well.

Yeah, I guess the fear is it ends up like Tresspasser or something...just awkward and hard to use. But it sure looked cool.
