View Full Version : Star Trek to return in 2 or 3 years...?

The Internet Movie Database (http://us.imdb.com/) has this blurb (http://us.imdb.com/news/sb/2005-05-31/) from Star Trek producer Rick Berman regarding the return of Star Trek in 2 or 3 years...
Star Trek producer Rick Berman plans to revive the movie franchise in two or three years. "I think that timeframe for a new, fresh feature with a whole different outlook would be fine," he told the British Star Trek Magazine. He also suggested that the Star Trek television productions might be revived. "[It] certainly would be possible," he told the magazine. "And the answer is that the powers that be at Paramount seem to feel that the time has come to give things a rest.
What do you think? Good or bad?

I think Star Trek is going to really turn things up with other great sci-fi shows/franchises like the updated Battlestar Galactica or Firefly/Serenity.

I think Firefly needs to be brought back on the air.
Other than that, I wouldn't mind another Star Trek in a few years as long as it didn't blow chunks.

A new Star Trek movie featuring a wholly original concept and characters would be neat.

A new Trek would be great. A new Trek with Berman still attached would not. *sigh*

I think I watched maybe 3 or 4 whole episodes of Enterprise. From the rock music in the opening credits, to Archer's pet beagle, and technology in use that was no where to be seen on the NCC-1701, I knew they had done something IMO unholy with the franchise.
Perhaps I am not qualified to give an opinion having seen on 3 or 4 episodes of a show that was on the air for a few years (3? 4?), still it doesn't compare to other Sci-Fi available today. Battlestar Galactica harkens back to ye' olde Babylon 5 in terms of quality sci-fi writing. Something ST left behind a long time ago.
That said, I think it is still possible to rescue ST from where ever it is living now. With quality writing, a quality cast, and a quality story, I think ST could regain some of what it lost in the Voyager/Enterprise years (again IMO). I do hope they wait a few years though.

Personally, I don't want a -new- set of characters, on a new show. I want a new show, with the old character I know and love like Riker, Worf, Sisko, Quark, Odo, Kira... etc.

They need to look at where the series stands
see which direction would be the best steps.
P.S. Picard was the shit.

I think that the Star Wars series thats planned for 2007(?) could possibly be stiff competition. Who knows. I'm always up for some new Star Trek. I would rather see new Firefly, but I'll settle for Star Trek.

In the last movie. Didn't they pull some stupid nonsense stunt of putting his memories into his "ex-evil"-twin, Lore, before nuking Data?

Yep in the last film they gave a inferior version of him all of Data's memories.By the end of the film though he was just singing and was very thick.
I want Sisko back. He was fucking great. Sisko didn't take any shit and i admire that :D

No, the plot is much much worse (if you can imagine it). They put his memories into his "stupid"-twin, Beta, a pre-Lore model.
Which is a good example of why you never let some internet fanboy write the script for your multi-million dollar movie.

So, you are saying that it would be a runaway smash success, right? If the "fans" hate it, without a doubt the series would be super successfull with the mainstream tv viewing audience. Heh.
Don't worry, I doubt Paramount would have the balls to do anything so radical (and yet so painfully obvious).

Babylon 5 was better than them all, anyhow. JMS ruined me for strictly episodic TV. I want stuff that's intentionally going somewhere, and wishy-washy crap like Lost and Alias don't count.

Firefly is a great show. Anytime that much sarcasm and wit can be added to the dialog makes it more real for me. Sure the story may have some cliches in it but what story doesn't.
Star Trek needs a break and having it stew for a while is a good idea. Get some new ideas, build up some fan want, find out what they want to see, and build it.
Oh and cryofreeze Patrick Stewart because he will need to be the voice of the computer just to be on the safeside.

A series that captured the look and feel of the orignial would be the best. I thought enterprise was going to revive the 60's look but it went with the generic grey instead. I want colored set lights and dramatic eye lights, I want CG using the look of the original ships, I want cheesy over the top acting! Is anyone with me?

The only thing that's clear to me is that Berman and Braga must go. They even admit their shitiness on the Generations commentary- "We used technobabble way too much in the show", "Kirk should die on the bridge of a spaceship, not on a bridge", "I can't believe we had the two great starship captains meet in a log cabin while cooking breakfast", etc. etc. I loved TOS, liked TNG, but the piss-poor TNG movies soured me on Trek. I haven't really watched DS9 or Enterprise, but when Voyager was on late-night syndication I used to watch it until I fell asleep, and it was baaaaaaaaad.
I think Evil is hinting that an original crew with new actors might be the way to go. It is an intriguing possibility, but I think it would just look too blatantly commercial. But if you take the kernel of his idea- taking characters already widely known and loved- and put them in a high quality animated or CG show, and you really might have something.
I may just have to watch me some Firefly, given the comments here. I only saw the first episode, and I was like, eh, buffy on a spaceship. But I'm a sucker for a good sci-fi show.

Make a show about the Hazard Team. Recreate the game Voyager: Elite Force, as your first series. That game made more sense than most episodes in any of the series. The goddamn characters acted like soldiers and wore body armor into a fire fight! Jesus Christ, was that so hard to think up?
I personally think people are a bit tired of the pussy Federation. It was fine in TNG, when most of the Galaxy was still unexplored and there were no threats that were going to burn hot. After the Dominion War and Romulan incident, Star Fleet officers that act like the saviors of the universe instead of soldiers is often insulting. The 8 mile long ships with little weaponry per tonnage or maneuverability is ludecris. The Dominion War ONCE AGAIN ended with talking and gross leaps of faith on the part of the viewer. Seriously, if the borg ever decided to send more than a single Cube into the Alpha quadrant at a time Sector 001 would be vapor.

I loved DS9 shitloads but i was gutted the way it ended.
Do you remember all those Jem Hadar Super Cruisers in orbit over Cardassia? They should've been put to good use before finally being wiped out. I thought the story would've been far more satisfying not ending with a treaty :(
I mean look at this site for pics on the fleet which was left at Cardassia and how big these ships were.

Don't wish for that, the world might end.
Personally, I've had enough of Trek. I'm still waiting for someone to do a Space 1999 movie/remake. However, I will make due with the new Kolshak series coming out this fall on ABC (ROCK!).

I assume you mean Kojak? OK, I've seen the commercials and WTF?!? A Greek guy with a Greek name now is suddenly an african american?!? As Johnny Cochran would've said: "That does not make sense!"
Sorry to go off topic, but that really annoyed me. Why not just change the name of the show to Shaft?

His comment wasn't racist. Don't be an idiot. What he said is true, it'd be like remaking DS9 and suddenly turning Sisko into a white guy... odd.
Star Trek was always too sterile, it just lacked energy and conflict. This and somewhat slow character development really hurt it, IMO. Firefly for instance had more interesting character development in one short season than any 3 of ST:TNG. Battlestar is also real nice in the energy department, I just think that Star Trek really needs a boost in almost every department, it's generally solid, but really doesn't stand out in any real way. If it wasn't for it's pedigree, any one of the new series likely wouldn't have made it out of the first season.

The 'In A Mirror, Darkly' episodes of ST:Enterprise with the TOS Defiant in combat was fucking astonishing. It's amazing how good that ship looks with good lighting and good camera angles.
My thoughts are that they should allow some fan-based content. Something episodic like Red vs. Blue. Let the fans come up with some characters and situations and give them 'trial runs' on startrek.com to see if any of them resonate.
I always thought Molyneux's 'The Movies' would make a FANTASTIC platform for Star Trek. Give the fans the Star Trek sets, outfits, create your own characters, and ships and let them go to town creating their own episodes. If anything 'works' that has a good premise, then Paramount can see about fleshing it out into a movie/series.

The Star Trek universe is too pc, too contrived.
I'd rather have a space opera, naval space opera of some type, with or without hard science. Get Weber, Ringo, Drake, Banks, or Reynolds to provide you with a pre-built universe from any of their storylines, and run with that.
I'd love to see a series about Lt. Leary of the RCN and Signals Officer Mundy, THE Mundy of Chatsworth, that is. :-)

Data's memory is now in B-4, not Lore, and not Beta. Bow before me nerds!
I've mentioned this in other posts, but I think a Firefly influenced series of Trek (a series dealing with non-military members of the universe; traders and such) could be pretty interesting. They could have the series run the entire course of the known Trek universe and we could see many of the big moments of the Trek universe through the eyes of civilians. What was it like to be on Earth when the Xindi attacked? How about for someone on the opposite of side of the quadrant to hear about Wolf-359? Actually, I think it'd be really interesting for the series to start with the Xindi attack on Earth and end with Voyager coming home.
Seriously, they should hire my ass to save Trek.

I liked the idea of a series on the Hazard team. And make it a more edgyer (sp?) Star Trek and less of all the ST personnel being so prim and proper.

While I'm not against seeing a darker side of the Trek universe, I think to a certain extent Star Fleet is just a nice guy kind of organization and that's good for what it is. There are plenty of anti-hero organizations and characters in sci-fi, I like Star Fleet as the good guys. Sure, it can be interesting, and has been in past episodes, to explore the underbelly of the organization, I don't think I'd be down with a Trek series that was just war and fighting, not as an event within a story, but as a basis for a show. Besides, I tend to think, and this is really just a personal opinion, that stories about war tend to be more limited than shows about exploration mixed with occassional confrontation, but that's just me.

I prefer to exist in the future for the Next Gen crew presented in the television series, where Data wound up holding Newton and Stephen Hawkin's chair at Cambridge, I think it was. It's late and I forget. It was in the episode All Good Things, a good old Q vs. Piccard clash. That was a future offered by Q, though, so it was probably false. Too bad.
