View Full Version : Realtime Worlds and Crackdown

After spending about three hours with the Realtime Worlds developers Billy Thompson and Phil Wilson, I walked away wishing I had better dexterity, more time and well, older kids:Billy began my tour of Pacifica City by jumping on the top of an SUV his partner was driving, crouching down and occasionally shooting at gang members (and a civilian or six) as they drove to a new area of town.

"There's a lot of tongue in cheek humor in this game. You'll never have the same experience twice. And, we designed it so it's fully destructible, you're not limited to only using weaponry or limited to Agency vehicles to accomplish your goals...oh you ****!"

It was at this point that the car drove through a tunnel that wasn't high enough to handle both the SUV and Billy on top. Billy's character was knocked off, battered bloody and respawned "through the magic of genetic cloning" to the last save point.More to be found here (http://www.gamersinfo.net/index.php?art/id:1542) at GamersInfo.net.

I know alot of people didn't like the demo. But after playing it for a couple hours I was really hooked. It's not perfect but for me it was hella fun. I will buy it for sure

The demo is actually pretty entertaining. I'm unwilling to pay full price for this one though. Give it to me for 30~40 and we'll talk.

I've played the demo for more hours than I've played some full games.

Crackdown is an awesome game, it really does not need Halo 3 beta invites.

They should have stuffed those with Fusion Frenzy 2.

I didn't enjoy the demo. What most GTA competitors don't seem to realize is that the fun is in being evil. If I can't be an evil bastard then the sandbox style games just bore me. I like nothing better then chasing down and running over pedestrians or using a rocket launcher on a virtual crowd. I'm not saying I won't get it though, just that it didn't thrill me the way GTA did.

OXM gave it a 7.0 in this months magazine. Main complaint was that it gets boring rather quickly.

No way, this is one of the funnest games in forever. I can't wait to play some online co-op with my friends.

And why can't you do that in Crackdown again? I could have sworn I was just doing all of that last night. I had my radar painted red with cops coming after me.

And when your grenades look like smal nukes, tossing those into a crowd is even more fun.

Man, I loved the demo....I've played through it a ton, and I feel like a kid at a candy store.

You can be evil. The quote I posted said he was shooting pedestrians. And, if you read the preview, you'll have read that he was stealing cars from pedestrians, mowing them down, etc.

You just bring down the Peacekeepers by doing so.

"Let me first say that the missions and story are just an excuse to play the game. There is so much to do in this game and it's so full of classic "gamer" moments..."

I like this quote, it sums up a lot of the feel I had from the game. In another interview I read they mentioned that they just wanted to make a toy, like a lego set, where the fun came form using your imagination and seeing what you could build, not just what you should build.

Strange, the more hours I played it the more I liked it.

Did you really play the demo? If you had, you would've noticed that killing civilians DE-LEVELS your abilities.

I don't have a problem with that, my sole complaint was that I was bored to tears about 5 minutes after I fired it up. Mindless fun just isn't my bag, unless it occurs in the bedroom.

Sleeper hit of the year. I don't know how I'm going to have any fun with GTA4 after playing Crackdown... it's going to feel so horizontal.

This is a rental for me. I can see having a good time with it but only for a short amount of time. Definitely not $60 no matter what game's beta comes with it.

Everybody wants to tell Kwan that you CAN be evil, but my argument is different. I don't WANT to be evil. You can do that in OTHER GTA knock offs. I'm glad I have a game where I'm busting up gang members and making my city better.

I personally enjoyed the crap out of the demo and I haven't played any good city-sandbox games since Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, so I'm do for another. Especially in beautiful X360 graphics.

After playing the demo over and over for hours, I can safely say that i'm all about playing this one.

The Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta is just icing on the delicious cake :D.

OXM is stupid and I hate their stinky opinions. WAAAAAAA! BTW they are very wrong.

That's the thing, if they didn't punish me for being evil then I wouldn't feel that way.

I enjoyed the demo, but I was really just collecting agility orbs. I completely ignored the man trying to tell me about gangs. I wish I could have just climbed all over the city without all the shooting bastards. Not $60 worth of fun, but I'll probably pick it up sometime in the future.

I never got into the GTA series almost gave Saint's Row a try, but couldn't find time. This is the first sandbox game I'm interested in...

Not sure why. Maybe, I'm more comfortable playing the good cop, than a punk. Maybe it's the draw distance. I like the art style. I like the lockon targeting system, although, I should try free targeting too. I like the leveling. Love jumping.

My girlfriend and I played it for an hour this weekend and she even liked it. She's not into the thug style of Saint's Row, so she wouldn't even give that a second look, but being a good cop worked for her. Plus she liked the driving and jumping.

Anyway, to each his own.

The de-leveling, at least in the demo, is so slow as to be practically pointless. Multiple times I've built up my explosives ability to 4* by getting the grenade launcher, sticking close to a supply point, and firing away without the slightest concern for civilians. By the time I hit 4*s the cops and gang are both pissed as hell.

I'm actually a person who doesn't typically like sandbox games - I hate GTA, Saints Row, the lot of 'em. I typically want to have goals in a game. But I'm enjoying just messing around in Crackdown. The 10+ hours I've put into the demo attest to that. The demo sold me on the game. Pre-paid for a copy today.

I didn't realize killing civilians could delevel you, I noticed it drained the little bars, but I thought those were more like percentage bars, where it means you can't go up, but your not going down in skill.

I found Saint's Row to be an enjoyable game. I didn't get into Crackdown like I thought I would. Maybe I should give it another shot...

That was because they significantly sped up how quickly you level abilities in the demo. Unless they also significantly increased the penalty for civdeaths in the demo, you're working with a balance(or lack thereof) that will not be the same in the full game.

After playing the demo countless number of hours, the missions are the last thing on my mind. I have too much fun just exploring the city, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, trying out the agency vehicles, etc. My sole purpose last night was to use the big rig and plow through the streets, watching cars i ran into go flying into the air and then explode. Gang members? Civilians? Peacekeepers? My front bumper didn't discriminate:)

It was ok, nothing to write home about though. Though, I must at least get in a co-op game before I completely abandon any thought of a purchase.
