Voodoo Extreme slapped up a new feature called Generation XP: Top 20 Games of the Last Generation (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/760/760755p1.html) where they count down the top-20 PC games released during the Windows XP era.

While the next generation of PC gaming seemingly lies with DirectX 10 and Vista, Microsoft's previous OS, Windows XP was no slouch when it came to gaming. Here are our top 20 PC games released during the Windows XP era, from Oct 25, 2001, to today.

Wierd choices.

Yeah, and Halo? What are they thinking? It's a port, and it isn't even that good a port!

It's hard to argue with their top 10 other than Doom 3. I think we can all agree that BF2 was vastly more popular than Doom 3 and probably deserves a spot in the top 20 of the past 6 years. Any other suggestions for that #9 spot in place of Doom 3?

Half-Life 2 should be the top game...WoW is too weak-sauce.

Yeah... extremely weird choices. Pretty much shoved to either RTS or FPS; except for WoW.

Guild Wars over Everquest? My EQ days are long gone, but I played that a lot longer than WoW. Heh 3rd ranger in my guild to get both epic swords those were the days fighting in a place called Hate hoping a god of Hate drops a corrupted emerald.

They had 2 RPGs plus WoW in there. Including Doom3 though?

I agree with Neverwinter Nights...that's just a terrifically fun game. I enjoyed it immensely. Still do, in fact, with some of the modules I've purchased and other user-created ones as well.

Great stuff.

I really enjoyed Doom 3 -- more than Half-Life 2 most of the time.

Guild Wars over Everquest? My EQ days are long gone, but I played that a lot longer than WoW.

EverQuest wasn't released during the Windows XP generation.

What's with one fucking game per page? Oh and it was a decent list, I'd probably have tossed in Battlefield 2 or 2142 instead of 1942 since the squad communications was greatly improved.

And I thought FEAR was actually a pretty weak game, the levels were horrid and repetitive, the only thing supposed to be scary was the few seconds of seeing a little girl walking around, I just never got scared at all. Maybe System Shock 2 spoiled me for scary games, nothing has come close since that.

Maybe System Shock 2 spoiled me for scary games, nothing has come close since that.FEAR had a really neat concept and the combat engine was awesome but you're right. Aside from a couple bits that were moderately creepy (usually with the Ninjas) it wasn't terribly scary.

Plus the monotonous office block of cubicles that occupied the majority of the game didn't help keep the fear level very high.

Until I can't buy games that run under XP, it's going to remain the current OS for me. It's at least $299 for me to upgrade to Vista (I pretty much require remote desktop so that I can connect to work) and I don't see any new feature that's going to overcome the drop in performance (not to mention the price of a new video card to be DX10 compliant).

This list is about 2 years too early.

This list is about 2 years too early.I hear ya. For now, Vista basically looks like a shiny graphical upgrade for XP. The reason I made the leap from 98SE to XP was because XP was actually, well, stable. That and I got a free copy of the full version of Home from my friend in Seattle who worked for MS at the time.

Unless I get a free copy of Vista (legitimately) I'm not going to jump on this OS till I can't get a game to run on it.

Knowing my upgrade cycle, it'll probably be the next Elder Scrolls game :)
