Atari has announced the development of Godzilla: Unleashed, the ultimate giant fighting monsters are set to be featured on the Wii, DS and PSP in autumn 2007.

Godzilla: Unleashed is a fighting game on a giant scale. The game stars the legendary Godzilla and a slew of the most renowned monsters of all-time. Gamers are challenged to ultimately save the planet from mayhem and destruction. Set in urban arenas, Godzilla: Unleashed’s interactive 3D cityscapes, big destructible buildings, soaring skyscrapers and towering alien formations provide the backdrop to epic worldwide destruction.
The first screenshots for the Wii version can be found here (http://www.strategyinformer.com/wii/godzillaunleashed/screenshots.html).

IGN has up a beefy article (http://wii.ign.com/articles/759/759955p2.html)about the game.

The remote handles attacks, and the nunchuk handles movement, jumping, and so forth. Because of the new controller, monsters can now execute any or all of their primary actions independently - which means that you can charge while jumping in the air - fire your weapon during attacks, and move freely at all times. This totally turns the "canned" animation system of past fighting games on its head. Godzilla can be walking in one direction, attacking with his claws in another, firing his weapon in a third direction, and swinging his tail at a rear target all at the same time. We're just focused on putting the maximum amount of control into the player's hands at all times.

I'm really excited about the prospect of breaking away from 'canned' animations for characters. We should much more free-flowing control if we are allowed to mix and match actions dynamically, rather than triggering the appropriate animation keyframes.

Those screens conjure memories of that old Neo Geo game King of the Monsters. :)

Yeah, but my first thought on reading the description: "Save the world from mayhem and destruction by causing even more mayhem and destruction. Go monsters, go!"

Just come out and say it: You're a monster - now, go destroy stuff!

I think this game has upside, I enjoyed it's counterpart on the Cube. Another 3rd party game can't hurt Nintendo.

I like the Cube godzilla game as well, tho it was considered crap by many. I've got hopes for this game as long as they load it full of extra goodies.

Count me in. I freaking love Godzilla, and having full control instead of feeling like you are stuck in a jar animation wise definitley is a bonus. The controls should definitley add a new element of skill to the game.

I enjoyed the first game. Not terribly deep, but fun. This could end up being awesome.

Sounds cool.

By the way, it's being published by Atari, not Midway.

I'm in. I loved both the last two Godzilla games on the Xbox. Still irks me they haven't gotten backward compatibility on the 360 yet.

I got bored with Destroy All Monsters pretty quickly when I played it a few years ago. I have to admit that the idea of decoupling the direction you walk and attack in is an appealing idea; I'm glad that the Wii's control scheme will help facilitate that. But really, I felt there was so much more they could do with these games. I mean, come on. Look at this (http://www.strategyinformer.com/wii/godzillaunleashed/screenshot-viewer.html?id=143848). That doesn't look like a living city at all. Where are the roads? Why are the buildings bunched together like that? Where are the horrified inhabitants, reporters, and militia?

I would have so much more fun throwing my weight around in a city that was reactive, or even seemed to have some indication that they noticed the impromptu fights by several-story-tall fire-breathing monsters. I want the badly dubbed japanese men pointing and yelling at me, I want to hear car alarms going off from the quakes my enormous feet make. I want a game featuring Godzilla to be like the movies that made him famous.

Sorry if that seems a bit too negative. I think this game could be fun multiplayer, and if it is going to be online, that is certainly a plus. Also, the screens look pretty nice. Definitely a big improvement over Destroy All Monsters.

Edit: In fact, after reading the article, one will learn that this game is in no way a port. It is built from the ground up specifically for the Wii.

How can that be classified as a half-ass port?

Yes. Yes, yes, and yes. I grew up on the big G and he is my childhood hero (even if he usually murdered thousands of people). I've always wanted a game focused on the interaction between the humans and this massive, living force of nature. An RTS would be fanTASTIC from the viewpoint of controlling the JSDF. Or even a game in the role of a sole human trying to get things done in an involving Gojira story. Just something to really give the effect of the size of the experience and not take the whole thing so light-heartedly.

Oh well, I know I'm in the minority so it's cool. Maybe Sandlot, the makers of Robot Alchemic Drive and Earth Defense Force X will be put in charge of a Gojira game. Hey, I can dream.

Covered by huge amounts of snow?

There seems to be a good reason for this...

The city designs in the original game were fairly realistic representations and, (some would say) were a little bland and lacked a unique theme. For Unleashed, we're creating uniquely themed city levels that reflect the post-apocalyptic storyline. Each city has been transformed by cataclysmic events brought about by giant alien crystals growing out of the earth. Unleashed features an amazing new dynamic building destruction system that is light years ahead of what was in the original game. Striking buildings now produce massive gouges, cracks, and realistic rubble. Players will be able to rampage through buildings leaving an impressive swath of destruction in their wake. Full-screen effects such as bloom and heat haze enhance the ambience of each scene with blinding explosions, glaring sunsets. You'll actually see the heat coming off Godzilla atomic breath as it blasts through everything in sight.

Kamalot, where are you getting that from? I've looked around on the link in the story and on Atari's website and haven't been able to find the text you're apparently reading. Would you mind providing a link to it?

Don't know how I missed that. I guess it would make sense why the citizens let snow cover the roads and there are too few of them to even notice if it was right after an apocalypse. Still, I think a populous Godzilla game would be fucking fantastic, regardless of the story.
