Our friends over at Popular Mechanics (http://www.popularmechanics.com/) decided to take a closer look into tech problems regarding the PS3, HDMI input, and the HDCP leaving many fans with blinking screens and sound cutting out when trying to play certian games.
You can read the article here. (http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/technology_news/4212161.html)
We asked Patrick Seybold, a senior PR manager for Sony Entertainment about the problem. He said he hadn’t heard of any issues with the HDMI connection, but he did suggest we try a video output reset. “That should be the first and foremost attempt at fixing the problem,” Seybold says. The reset—instructions are available on the PS3 troubleshooting page—requires that you turn off the PS3 with the manual switch on the back, turn it on and then hold the front power button down for about five to eight seconds until it beeps twice. Then you re-select the 1080p resolution when prompted. Thanks, Patrick, we tried your fix... but after a couple of rounds of Resistance, we were back to the blinking screen.
Editor's Note: Thanks to BlackPete for a similar submission.

From that article it seems it's more Westinghouse's fault than Sony's. That's almost surprising ;)

This is a very strange issue. Odd for Popular Mechanics to run with it too. I don't see many game articles in their mag either.

That would suck having to send your TV in. I wonder how long it takes to get it all fixed and updated?

They made it sound like it would be in-home service.

It's because Sony doesn't consider the PS3 a "gaming" platform, so I'm not surprised Popular Mechanics picked it up. I believe it's referred to as the "Ultimate-super-shruy-ru-ken-Universal-Media-device". Sony would make it play 8-tracks if they became popular again, with only a firmware upgrade to boot. :)

This also happens to my brother inlaw's brand new 60" Sony SXRD rear projection tv... heh..... HDCP and other DRM need to die.

Gotta agree this one isn't Sony's fault. HDMI is cool technology, but like Bluetooth, has growing pains. I just picked up a new Pioneer Elite HDMI switching receiver and my DirecTV box can't sync through it - have to direct connect it to the TV. And you guys want HDMI... ;)

Basically the Westinghouse TV needs a firmware update -- you can thank HDCP for that.
One thing pisses me off about this industry though: If they'd just take all that money they spent on developing DRM and used it to improve the overall technology instead, imagine how much further ahead we'd be on the technological landscape?

HDCP is a bad idea with worse implementation for which consumers suffer.

I'm pretty sure most places have field techs that can come to your house.

What about "The mystery of the PS3 that has no display if you are powered down and hit eject for the disc on your remote".
Nothing happens. No eject, no video display. I have to power off the machine and reboot it, let the disc load/play before I eject it.
Kind of lame.

I know I'm going to upset some people, but if you go on internet forums and say "if you blah blah blah IMO you fail" without backing up the reason why they fail, then IMO, you fail.
I think that means I fail too. ;_;

sweet then me and you fail!
I say the originating post because there quality are horrible and for the amount of money you spend and maybe (depending on where you go and coupons) you can get a more functional and better quality HDTV. IMO they suck but then that us my opinion. so i still fail?

You all fail...for the PS3...is doomed.
Sorry, I pictured that being said by Master Shake. I mean, no disrespect to PS3 enjoyers...I will one day enjoy something on there, but I'm in no hurry.
Westinghouse makes a good TV for the money

The important thing is that the HDCP worked as intended and no piracy was possible of the precious, precious signal.

He's right. No one was able to copy the output signal with it being black with a blinking light and what not. :)

As another poster has since stated, Westinghouse monitors are a good value for the price. I mean yeah, you won't get top of the line picture quality, but from what I've read, some calibration can go a long way in giving a respectable picture.
While you've provided a reasonable argument to support your statement, you still fail though because I said so. F- for you! ;)

This really has nothing to do with the PS3 though. This is a HDCP/HDMI issue with Westinghouse TVs.... and DRM in general.
In short, DRM sucks ass.
I have this with mine when outputting 1080p. If I turn the tv off and back on, or cycle to a different input then back to HDMI, takes 1 second and it is fixed. Annoying yes, but I am fine with it as long as it will be addressed in a future patch.
And anyone who slams Westinghouse has obviously not seen the picture on a 1080p. Unbelievable picture for a little over a grand. Educate yourself on avsforums about different displays before commenting on them, that way you won't sound like an ignorant slut.

Don't bother posting if you're just going to drop the same anecdotal tripe. We're all aware of the PS3's growing pains, and we don't need your stupid single-minded ass to constantly repeat this nonsense.

it is not just the westys, a ton of tvs have issues with the hdmi signal. could be tv, could be the signal, could be anything.
