An interesting article at Bit-tech.net (http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/05/25/rsx_still_in_development/) has Marv Burket, Nvidia’s CFO, releasing some interesting information:
[…]RSX is still in development and that no actual silicon is available yet. In other words, the silicon is not even taped out thus far...
Is it me or isn’t it a bad thing that the GPU isn’t done yet? There is no way they could have enough chips for global release. I think this assures a Japan first, US second, Europe last release schedule.

Since they are not planning a release for another year methinks they still have time for production. What this says to me is that they have no idea how effective or ineffective their chip will be when combined with their other hardware in rendering games.

Does this mean that the videos they showed at E3 weren't really representing what the PS3 hardware can do?

Isn't that the release schedule usually though? Both Sony and Nintendo distribute in that manner.

I would have been surprised if they had taped it out already. And I imagine they're still on schedule for their stated release, but it wouldn't take very large problems to set things back.
I'm really hoping all companies can deliver what they promised, when they promised it.

Is there actual silicon of Cell yet?

So they may as well have claimed the ps3 was powered by voodoo, that would have been just as likely as they specs they gave us.

There were a lot of rumors (and hope) that Sony would do a global release to battle Microsofts earlier release.

Those videos were to 'specs' so basiclly all you have to to is claim your system can replace reality and make a few videos to impress the sheep and you have a hit console on your hands. Maybe all the Phantom needs to do is the samething. The more I hear about Sony and the PS3 the more I am impressed with the 360.

The ps3 can render 49327563 polygons at once and can fool the human eye. And I'm not talkin about fooling it into believeing a rendered image is real, I mean fool the eye into thinking its a golf ball or something. Its that fucking powerfull.
I should be a sony exec.

Ok, first of all, does the 360 have any units out there? As far as I know they are still handing out Alpha kits that are 30-40% the power of the final system. So, any demo games are still "built to spec". So, I think everyone needs to lighten up on all the PS3 bashing.
Honestly, I'm not really impressed by either system. Why? What 360 games are going to be released when the 360 is? Anything good? As of right now, if I get a 360 all I'll be playing on the first day is Halo 2.
That goes the same with the PS3. Killzone looks pretty awesome but with the increadable shittyness of the first game I seriously doubt that the second can be that good.
What will be awesome? The revolution. Because at least I know I can play Chrono Trigger.

Just like to comment -- The stuff you see for 360 right now is actually a "game" in "development" running on "development kits" that are created to allow "developers" to build these "games" and actually run them on a real, physical system, so that then they can be tested and produced prior to the actual hardware being available. They are not "built-to-spec" per se, since they are actually functioning and in many cases, playable on alpha hardware. Later, they will be optimized for the actual hardware, once that becomes available.
This is a far cry from what might as well be a DVD of "footage" masquerading as a game in development.

I guess you don't do much readings do you? A little google search, really not complicated one.
Xbox 360 will unleash the greatest game lineup in the history of video games when it launches in North America, Europe and Japan this Christmas holiday. The games that captured the color, drama and fun of high-definition gameplay at the MTV unveiling included 2K Sports' "NBA 2K6"; Activision Publishing Inc.'s "Call of Duty 2" and "Tony Hawk's American Wasteland", along with id Software's "QUAKE 4"; Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL 06," "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" and "Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06"; Majesco Entertainment's "The Darkness"; Microsoft Game Studios' "Perfect Dark: Zero," "Kameo: Elements of Power" "Project Gotham Racing 3" and "Gears of War"; THQ Inc.'s "Saint's Row"; and Ubisoft Entertainment's "Ghost Recon 3."

14 launch games... neat.
The European PSP launch is more impressive though - 29 games.

I'm not surprised either that the GPU isn't complete yet. I think they still have enough time to get things ironed out. Microsoft was running Mac G5's with ATI radeon x800's for their "demo" systems, so in reality neither company had actual silicon running any of their games/demos. It's entirely possible that Sony has some similar alpha hardware out there too no?
Oh, does anybody else find it kind of ironic that Microsoft is using Apple hardware to showcase their new product? Xbox360....run's great on a Mac!

There are not launch game. The PSP was supposed to be lunched couple of months ago. And was launch a while ago in Japan and then in the US. 14 launch titles is a lot. The DS had what? 3? :)

Accorinding to MS the "real" dev kits where going out right after E3.

6 months ago the final silicon for the GPU in the Xbox2 wasn't taped out yet either. Whats the big deal? Hell, they are just now getting the final silicon out for Xbox2 (if what MS said is infact true -- final dev kits shipping soon)
You guys need to stop with the insanity. These consoles aren't being released at the same time. One is nearly done and the other still has 6 months before they should be nearing completion.

I just hope this doesn't set things back too far for good ol' Sony.

It is easier (and cheaper) to develop games for PSP than develop games for Next Gen Consoles..... It is obvious.....
It is like comparing it with the 2600 ... on launch, the atari 2600 had 100* games! WHOA!
Note the *- I don't know the real number....

How would it? They aren't behind...
They have a release date ~6 months after Xbox2, and thats about where they are. As I said prevously, 6 months ago the Xbox2 GPU wasn't finished yet either; no surprise there, it wasn't expected to be... why the PS3 is supposed to be finished when its got nearly a year before release is mind boggling.
Some of you guys need to stop looking so hard to justify your like/hate for a given company.

I think Sony is teh d00m3d!1! needs to become the new catch phrase on message boards. When people say it about nintendo it's always ironic but I think some people truly believe sony is teh doomed.

Sigh. Why do you have to be a voice of reason, bobbler? People justify hate because the console companies are synonymous with how someone related to their parents. I see it like this:
You love Microsoft but hate Sony: You have hate towards your father (he might have kicked the shit out of you or was a total dick)
Love Sony but hate Microsoft: You have hate towards your mother (she may have been a whore or something)
Hate Both Companies: You were an orphan and had no parents
Love Both Companies: You had great parents
The above comes from years of mandatory college psychology classes. Freud who?
(for fun you could throw Nintendo into the mix, but that would create a conundrum that I dont think many of you are ready for)

So since I like both systems, and plan to buy both, I guess that makes me some communist mutant Rosicrucian that plans to destroy society, as we know it huh?
Seriously I can't understand why more gamers aren't just jazzed all to hell that two excellent (Maybe three I haven't read that much about the revolution.) Consoles are being released in the next year. Stop the hate, were all gamers here.

Let me try, if you love nintendo you were raised by homosexual male parents who loved you in a purely platonic sense; and would choose all your school clothes for you so you could be the best dressed in class.
Right?

People hate Nintendo because finding out that the tough manly hero of Metroid is a woman caused them to be attracted to men, but they can't come to grips with their sexuality.
It's true. All you "gaycube" haters need to come out of the closet.

Before the Gamecube really started packing on the 1st party games I might have been labled a fiery critic. That was over 2 years ago, in college and nothing really appealled to me then. Nowadays, I'm a staunch Nintendo defender that sees them as the last pure "gaming company" that is truly interested in entertaining you rather than the all-mighty dollar. (though of course, they want money just as bad as the next guys, but they dont appear as slimy or greedy)
The DS didnt wow me and I still have quite a few qualms with Nintendo (as i do MS and Sony), but if they could get that 3rd party support back, they'd be pure gold. They could potentially slip Sony onto one foot and Microsoft onto the other and skate around the floor wiping both their asses into the linoleum.
Eh, I just hope Nintendo does great this round. I hope all the systems do great because it only means better incentives to be a gamer! Don't system hate--appreciate, brotha!

I just want good games. And by games, I do not mean shiny movies or FPS V6.7. Games.
