On the official forum, Epic (http://epicgames.com/)'s Mark Rein has posted a response (http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?p=24755435#post24755435) to the broken 1280x1024 since the patch.
Many users spoke up and said they favored playing the game at higher resolution in a letterbox rather than playing it in full-screen mode. To achieve the proper aspect ratio in full screen mode we had to render at 900x720 (the next usable 5:4 resolution below our maximum of 1280x720) and then let the Xbox 360 scale to fit.The support for this game has been amazing even when they break it.

I hadn't really noticed it broke. I had fun on the new maps last night.

I'm sure I would notice eventually, but I haven't yet...

It isn't "broken", it simply isn't as high res as people expected. The recent update corrected the previously-broken stretched aspect ratio on 4:3 and 5:4 monitors. But to do full screen at a 1280x1024 (which is over 40% more pixels per frame than Gears' maximum mode of 720p) we had to scale up from the highest usable 5:4 resolution (which is 900x720) which meant reduced quality over what users expected when they set their Xbox 360 to use their monitor's 1280x1024 resolution. The users spoke up and said they'd rather have 1280x720 (720p) unscaled but in letterbox (which is true HD) and we decided it was the right thing and that's what will happen when they get the next update. Users of lower resolutions won't be affected as they're fine as they are now. Users of widescreen monitors were never affected by this as we always rendered in 720p and let the Xbox scale them as appropriate and it always looked amazing.

How did no one catch that?

Dear interwebs: stop screwing up words that sound similar. Your treatment of the various forms of 'your' and 'their' are already grievous infractions. Further action cannot be ignored.

Ah... thanks for the explanation Mark. I was a bit fuzzy on exactly what was supposedly "broken" but that cleared it up completely.

I <3 Epic, makes me warm inside that I have GoW sitting on top of my 360 right now. I just need to finish VP first ;-)

I was going to say something snarky, but Mark Rein posted in here so I will not, out of respect.

I was looking for the quotes and a link from that statement by Mark linking to the source statement, but to my surprise it was Mark.

Excellent...so perhaps this means that people from the XBLA camp might see my comments harping on the need for simple2x filtering for their classic arcade titles. It's what makes classic games super sharp on my 1080p DLP.

How did no one catch that?

Easy...as Mark Rein pointed out, it's something which apparently only happens when using a computer monitor, something which is not the norm for a console game (yet). I wouldn't blame Q&A if they never even thought of testing the game on a pc monitor.

My 4th copy hasn't been eaten by my 360 yet. I played the new maps last night and am digging it. Best multiplayer experience on a console yet (aside from Xband+SNES+Killer Instinct).

I have a different problem with GoW right now. From the moment the patch hit Live, I haven't been able to join multiplayer games. When I go into the Custom Games listing, the ping bars are all gray, on every host. When I try to connect to them, it just immediately tells me that my connection to the host was lost.

This happened on the day of the patch, because I had actually been playing fine up through the day before. I can still play co-op as well, which is odd, because me and my friend played it last night without suffering any noticeable latency. But joining in any kind of versus match seems impossible. I don't seem to be the only one with the problem either. That is something you guys need to look into.

I know it's not "technically" broken. But going from looking great to looking like ass sure constitutes as "not fixed" to many.

As you can see, from the last patch and the response to this issue, Epic is listening.
