With the recent announcement of Metal Gear Solid it was exactly the right time to talk with Hideo Kojima. In this exclusive interview he talks about the future of Metal Gear Solid, and offers a rather unique gastronomic view of the next-generation of console wars.

If the game creators and the users want to have a great steak for their anniversary, they go maybe to PS3. But if they want great dinner, great steak with their family, a little bit more casual during the weekends, they might select Xbox 360. Or why not have a great steak at your house everyday, they might choose Revolution. So my impression of the battle between the consoles is, it’s not about what kind of dinner it is. It’s more about how much the dinner will be. Will it be worth the cost of being served? Or where can I have this dinner - number of restaurants, is it near my house or do I have to take a cab or train or bus? I think the battle amongst the next-gen platforms lies in that area.

That's certainly a unique take on the battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. For more wise words from the man himself, read the whole Boomtown interview (http://ps2.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=8293).

Let's say I want to take a cab over to 4th Avenue, and then catch the bus to Krystals, but I only order a large Coke, and walk down the street to Taco Bell.

Does this make me a DS or PSP guy?

(Good interview.)

A DS guy. If you ordered a Pepsi, you'd be PSP guy, I'm sure. ;P

All cola is the DS. The sugary lure of Nintendo's portable reputation is what lures you in, only to find no nutritional value whatsoever!

No I don't really believe that. Yes it was a lame reach for a pun. Shut up. It's early.

I think he's saying he likes steak.

I think he said MGS4 will have a third person controllable 3d camera and is finally following in step with Splinter Cell. Good job, Hideo. Its about time.

Re: the dinner analogy
I think what he's essentially saying is that the PS3 is going to be expensive to develope for, the X360 a bit less, and the Revolution a bit less than that. This isn't to say anything about the quality of the games on the systems, and he even admits that the hasn't actually developed anything on any of the systems yet. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, it seems to me that the dinner analogy is from the developer's perspective, not the gamer's. He's saying that as a developer he can choose the dinner (game) to do and that with the Revolution he can do lots of dinners frequently. With the X360 it's something that he can't quite do as often but might be more exciting/fulfilling and that with the PS3 he might not be able to a dinner often at all, but that it will be a really good dinner when he does.

1) Hideo isn't doing MGS4, or atleast that is what the video hinted at
2) He is rumored to be working on something new for the Rev
3) They poked fun at Splinter Cell in the MGS4 video (rightfully so, who wants to play a stealth game where one has to know exactly what the game designer wants you to do at any given time).

So this is how the man thinks. No wonder the plot of the Metal Gear titles are what they are.

I'm a huge fan of the MGS series, but I couldn't really get into MSG3. And I tried, and tried, and tried some more. Am I the only one who got bored of hding in the grass? I'm sure I'll try playing it again at some point...

umm...did you read this interview? The first couple of questions are about his involvement with MGS4.

It gets better towards the end, but it's true, there's a lot of grass-hiding. And silly things like instantly fixing broken bones and changing camo. But all warts aside, for whatever reason, it's still my favorite game in the series.

So I guess the part where it said "designed, produced, and directed by Hideo Kojima" was nothing eh.

HELLO FROM OPPOSITE WORLD.
(But I'd like to see those rumors on the second point though.)

that does explain things

but i think the analogy is that all 3 consoles can co-exist with different demographics and different costs. developers and users are going to develop for and buy the consoles in their demographic.

Think of Boktai and Metal Gear Acid. Kojima tries to play to the strength of each piece of hardware.

I think it will be good, but as he said, it would change the mgs too much for the 'trilogy' purpose. Funny you speak about him like that though, considering how much splinter cell took from him.

I was actually going to post exactly that last night, but figured I wouldn't bother.
