Granted, Sony did incorporate motion sensor and wireless technology into SIXAXIS, but it's ultimately less of a controller revolution than evolution of the existing Dual Shock -- yet the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences decided SIXAXIS worthy of Technology and Engineering Emmy Award at CES this year. The actual event takes place later tonight in Las Vegas, [Nevada].

This is not true. It uses the tilt function well in a few games. Obviously in driving games you can use it as a steering wheel but Blast Factor uses it best.

You are pointing out one of the lamest uses for the sixaxis. Using the tilt function in driving games like MotorStorm is pretty much the same as using the Wii-mote for Excite Truck. Like I said above, Blast Factor uses it pretty well by allowing you to tilt it to one side and sending a wave across the playfield. It has a very natural feel to it when you use it.

Fucking finally someone agrees with me. I've been saying this for years. I've always hated where they put the analog sticks. It's uncomfortable, it's a poor design choice, and when you have to use both of them (IE, any game in 3D) at the same time, it fucking sucks! I'll still undoubtadly suffer through it when the PS3 is not raping me up the asshole with its price, but I can't say I really look forward to playing a first person shooter with a controller that has not even fucking changed a bit (and please, don't say "oh but they added" because it's almost identical). In fact, they TOOK OUT the only thing that was really redeeming about the controller in the first place, which was the rumble. It had great rumble. It was well balanced, it was usually well implemented, and I felt it added a lot to the experience. It's now something I so regularly equate with gaming, it really threw me off at first when I played Genji. When I got hit, I kept expecting the controller to rumble, but it didn't.

Plus, this is supposed to be the "next generation". Well, Microsoft came up with an ergonomic, comfortable design and actually learned from their mistakes. There is nothing wrong with the 360 controller. It's reasonably heavy, shaped to conform, and designed for ease of use. Hell, I even like the triggers better now (I didn't at first). Nintendo is off doing something crazy, but it just feels right when you hold it in your hands. It's light and it's small, but it's well designed. And then, there's Sony. So utterly arrogant and confident in their ability to butt fuck the consumer that they don't even bother to do anything remotely different with their controller. Oh well. Maybe their poor decisions will actually come back to bite them this time around.

I'm not a big zelda guy, but a 50 hour zelda game doesn't count? Sure, it's on GC too, but it's still a Wii launch title. You can't discount it as one. Plus, I'd say Trauma Center is by and large the best title on the system, and I'd consider it a pretty rich and full gaming experience. I had SO much fun with that freaking game. I spent 9 hours one day playing and replaying surgeries (my little brother got a Wii for christmas). Now, I'll agree, there ain't a whole lot else going on for the Wii. Need For Speed Carbon however, is pretty robust and it's there too. The controls seem to work well enough (not as fluid as Excite Truck) but it's a long game. Sure, it's on other systems, but if you need a reason to use the Wii controller for something other than a vibrator, there's fun to be had there.

If you have a few friends and a 24 pack of your favorite alcohol or prefer to abuse substances, Wii Sports offers some serious fun for many, many, many drunken hours. Then, most games are fun in this regard. Wii Sports becomes exponentially more fun as you imbibe more alcohol.

Plus, with Metroid on the way, along with Warioware, I'd say the system by and large had a far superior launch line up than the other two, and I own a 360! I still want a Wii, but with Nintendo, I'm willing to buy into potential for the system. A 50 hour zelda game for a guy who doesn't obsess over zelda will keep me busy for months, and everything else is simply icing on the cake.

I completely blanked out the d-pad because it sucks so much shit. That IS truly the only part of the controller that could have been much better implemented. I should have remembered to mention that is actually a huge complaint of mine. With a game like Superman Returns, trying to select your powers on the fly via the d-pad sucks so hard because half the time it selects the wrong one. Minor annoyance, but annoying as hell anyway. Plus, with all the great arcade games, you kind of want to play with the d-pad, but you can't, because it fucking sucks. I'd kill for the Playstation d-pad on the 360 controller.

I honestly have always preferred the PS controllers to every other one. I am sure that it is only because it has been my system of choice for quite a few years. I don't seem to have problems at all in resistance with the stick placement. I also love the weight, I can play for hours with no problems. I guess it's just me, but a lot of my friends feel the same. My roommates actually say they won't get a 360 because they like the PS2 controller more.

I agree that the DualShock is ass. I've been saying it since the PS1 era. Those sticks are horridly placed, and horridly designed. For years I didn't even use them. I'd turn off the analog and use the d-pad for everything, because the sticks were uncomfortable as hell.

The accuracy oc the sticks has been dismal since day one. I'm not even convinced they're true analog, given that the fashion in which they are implemented in most games seems to be more of a two-step switch than a smooth flow.

Then the PS2 came along, and all they did was paint it black, and put shitty attempts and pressure sensitivity in the buttons, the only result of which was to cause me to get continually frustrated in the GT games, because I'd dare to relax my fingers instead of grinding them into the pad, and be rewarded with bafflement as to why my car was going 65 on a high speed track.

The Xbox controller was definitely the best of the last generation, though it's sticks could've been a little better as well, and I never liked the awkward non-symettrical placement of them.

As for best controller of all time, I'd have to go with the N64. Yes it was an unusual design, but that stick was incredible. It was quite simply the best controller ever made for FPS games. I think I'd actually like present day console shooters a lot more if I could play them with that stick.

The dpad really should be fixed on the 360. A couple of my friends are casual gamers and only play sports game -- Madden and NCAA -- and use the dpad instead of the analog sticks. A large part of the reason they won't go 360 over PS3 is simply because of the dpad.

I've agreed with this all my life. DualShock is ass. That said, my favorite controller was the Duke right up until the 360 was released.

If the 360 had a better d-pad, it would hands down be the best controller of all time.

Well, without seeing the list of nominees for the category it won (I still haven't found it listed, btw. Help?) it's hard to say. It could be as pointed above that Nintendo never submitted the Wiimote for nomination. The 360's couldn't have since it's a 2005 product. Maybe the SIXAXIS was a shoe-in for "best controller of a next gen console" under those circumstances? ;)

At this point tho' I'm still calling shenanigans until I see an official release of nominees (or better, winners) that shows the SIXAXIS on it.

... or at least putting myself in the running for Numpty 2007 :D
