According to IGN's Matt (http://blogs.ign.com/matt-ign) :
Once upon a time, a very smart publisher came up with a brilliant idea. It contacted Microsoft and got the ball rolling on a very unlikely project: Halo for Nintendo DS. Needless to say, there were many egos involved and unfortunately because of some issues that I won't detail, the project was eventually cancelled. But not before it was completely up and running and fully playable. I know all this because I recently learned of the back-story and got a chance to play a leaked build of Halo on DS for myself.
Amazingly, the ill-fated DS version of the title plays remarkably well. Think Metroid Prime Hunters but with a Halo facelift. I had the opportunity to run through the beginning beach area and noted while playing that it looked like Xbox Halo except on DS, it was running fast, and the control was responsive. The trademark Halo music even played out of the tiny speakers of Nintendo's handheld. It is really, truly a damned shame that certain publishers couldn't make this happen because it would have undoubtedly been a huge hit and would have only furthered the popularity of DS and the Halo franchise.

Halo on a Nintendo console? Surely the final sign of the apocalypse...

The ONLY way this happens is if Microsoft's game division and Nintendo enter into some sort of huge, anti-Sony conglomerate with the sole purpose of wiping Sony off the map. (Which, by the way, wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.) ;)

Damnit. Someone needs to leak the .nds file for this. ;P
And yes, I would buy Halo on the DS, for sure. Listen up Microsoft Game Studios!

Well, MechAssault did make it out to the DS.

This would be awesome, though I don't think Microsoft would be willing to help the DS out so much, even if it did hurt Sony.

Goddamnit who at MSoft thought this would be a bad idea? They suck.

True, and I think Rare was doing some DS games, but let's be honest here - MechAssault isn't the 900-pound gorilla that Halo is. Would Mario or Metroid ever appear on the Xbox360/XBL?
Halo appearing on the DS basically means that Microsoft is officially out of the handheld business (which would indicate that Zune will be strictly a music/media player and not a gaming device), and that Microsoft and Nintendo would be aiming to completely obliterate Sony. Personally, I'm all for it, but there's absolutely no chance that this is happening.

Cancelled due to Microsofts upcoming Handheld console.......?

I would have found it surprising only if Microsoft did enter the handheld arena soon. Otherwise, I'm not shocked -- Microsoft has a good relationship with Nintendo from what I can tell.

Well, MechAssault did make it out to the DS.
And so did Age of Empires. I think Halo on the DS will only increase the popularity of the franchise. Maybe they canned the project because Microsoft might be planning its own handheld.

I'd really like to see this happen. It is as simple as that, I love Halo games, I own a DS, I would buy this without thinking.

Why would you want less competition? I DO NOT want to see Sony fail, EVER, same thing goes to Nintendo and MS. I think people are so blindly loyal to a company that sees you as a cold number, that they forget about common sense.

Matt is a compulsive liar and should've been sacked years ago.
Wasn't Matt the guy who argued that Nintendo making a profit from the Wii was somehow a bad thing? I think he's suffered a few too many blows to the head.

Huh? Why? Even if you dislike Sony, Microsoft needs the competition to keep them in check. Believe me, Microsoft will become just as big of a dumb asshole as Sony if given the opportunity.
I personally don't care for either company right now, but at least Microsoft is doing things right. Give them a few years of market dominance and that may change.
Nintendo isn't perfect either. Back in the day when they had market dominance, they pulled some asshole moves too, but at least they always produced great games.

No that was Vlad Cole... though come to think of it Matt may have joined in, he's that kind of guy.
Matt became infamous on the GameFAQs GC board back in the day, every month he'd say Rare was about to go 3rd party, Nintendo is teh doomed!1 This went on for a year.
Every time it happened we'd get a wave of trolls invading from the PS2 and Xbox forums (mostly from the PS2 forums) and it'd be suspensions all round. Finally, something was actually happening with Rare, a lot of sites stupidly followed Matt's lead with the 3rd party crap. When it came to light that MS had just bought them outright, we promptly pissed ourselves laughing.

i think Microsoft is still feeling around this relatively new industry. I'm not so sure Halo would be the best idea for them to put on the DS (or any other system for that matter), but they have used their other franchises (as mentioned above).
If anything, I think they are jsut trying to see what would make the most business sense. I'm not so sure the reason something like this would be canned is that MS is coming up with their own handheld. I think that their marketing team and accounting team got together and did some crazy calculation balancing sales and profits and brand dilusion and the importance of Halo to the 360... and decided it wouldn't be worth it.
That is, if the idea was ever actually being worked on.

I really wish I could believe this. I really, REALLY do. A Halo on DS would be amazing, too good to be true. Is the ZUNE really MS's handheld 'cause I was under the impression that it was a not-shitty iPod.

I'd snap up a copy, but does anyone else think part of what might make this a bad idea is diluting the franchise?
Seriously; two titles, and I'm SICK of hearing about Halo. I'm a HUGE fan; played over 4,000 multiplayer matches, after all. I'm also going to buy the next one. But damn am I sick of hearing about it.
Perhaps they just didn't want to dilute the franchise, if this is for real?

Well it is, its better for the consumer(us) when we pay less.

We are paying less, by far, for the Wii... but the point was that he berated them for making a profit. Which, the last time I checked, was the reason companies, you know.... sell stuff.

I'd guess there were several factors. For one thing, they'd be going toe-to-toe with Metroid on it's home court. Not exactly an ideal situation for them. They probably did some research to find out how many XBOX owners also owned a DS, and maybe that turned out to be too small (lets face it, this would be aimed specifically at people who own an XBOX and a DS). Or you could be right, they didn't want to oversaturate the Halo franchise, and wanted to extend it slowly with Halo Wars. Really, we can't do anything but dick around and guess unless one of the dev team shows up to give us the inside scoop.
Anyhow, if anyone at Microsoft is reading this, please reconsider.

That's a really good point. It sure wouldn't look good for Halo if it were to appear on the DS and sell miserably. That would really dilute the franchise right there!

Think Metroid Prime Hunters but with a Halo facelift.
I'm not sure 'shinier' counts as a facelift.
