Team Xbox (http://www.teamxbox.com) is reporting that Vogster Entertainment is working on an MMO called CrimeCraft for PC, 360 and PS3.
You can read more here (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12515/CrimeCraft-Announced/).
The game is set in a modern world. Players will take part in the political, economical and social life of a big city. They will run businesses, engage in commerce, and suffer the consequences of confrontations with criminal groups and shadowy law enforcement figures. Powerful AI will support the constantly changing atmosphere of the streets and enable players to feel the live pulse of the Megapolis.
The key game features include:
* Ownership of real-estate and cars
* Possibility to run shops, warehouses, banks, productions
* Fight over territories and clan wars
* Combat system unique for MMO
* Developed social system. Possibility to solve conflicts without a single shot
* or possibility to choose law-obeying, criminal or financial professions and changing of those throughout the game.
CrimeCraft? Really? You had literally millions of possibilities to choose from and that's what you came up with?

I love their Vague press release. I would just replace it all with "Highly polished, and expertly developed game that will appeal to both the hardcore and casual player."
Seriously, it's like they know that MMOs need to be good, but not what makes them good. How will these things work and affect the game? HOW is the combat unique for an MMO? HOW is it socially developed? What do you get from owning boats, homes, etc? You can't just have a bunch of textured models and avatars walking around in it, we are getting beyond that in MMOs(sloooowly), this isn't Korea.

Having an MMO with a population larger than that of Ireland doesn't mean they own the suffix -craft. (Though I wonder how much the rights to that cost)

Vogster has three things working against their chance of success with this game.
1) They are making a MMOG.
2) They are going to develop it for the PC, 360, and the PS3 for some reason.
3) The game is called CrimeCraft.

Saints Row went head-to-head with GTA and I think it is far superior to the GTA franchise. Physics, no load times (even pauses), and the awesome waypoint line you get in your mini-map instead of just a dot on the edge of the mini-map "compass" just make it a great deal more fun to play.
I think everyone seems to be calling this crap too early.
I keep fantasizing about an "modern day/alternate universe" MMO that lets you play as an occult creature of some sort. Vampires, werewolves, fae tricksters, and mortal psychics (telekinesis, empathy, telepath (think mezzer/illusionist for this), and mortal magic users would make up the character classes. Give it two sides that sort of follow the X-men theme - one side wants to live peacefully with humanity and the other feels that occult figures should hold dominance over humanity. This creates the backdrop for RvR as you work to gain control over zones in a gigantic city.
Instances could take place in interesting locales with their own themes like a haunted house, theme park (actually make this a quest hub/town as well), and other worldly areas (spirit plane, world of the Fae both darkly beatuiful Unseeli and perfectly beautiful, Seeli, etc.)
Could go on and on. . . anyway, basically I want something like a Nightwatch MMO, but without the license as I would want more freedom with the IP.

Hmmm....since it's called Crimecraft, I wonder what kind of crafting system the game will have? Surely a game with craft in it's name will have crafting. Perhaps one of the pieces of real estate will be a meth lab where people can go up to a workbench and increase their skillz.

Here's what I don't get. Why just criminals?
Here's a tip to game designers: The wheel is awesome, please do not fix. It's called "cops and robbers" and we've been playing it for centuries as children because it's TONS OF FUN.
I just don't get why any game with a crime theme has to have you be either the cops (SWAT/R6) or the robbers (GTA/MAFIA/Saints Row) but none of them let you pick a side and duke it out in the big city.
I'd love to try and get my crackhouses set up in a new neighborhood knowing full well there are human minds behind the ATF/SWAT/police/DEA trying to stop me. Or vice versa, go out there and bust criminals that are real human players.

For a game that's based around (from the description) being able to choose good or evil... why is the name based around pure evil? Crime? Wait a second, couldn't you theoretically have a perfectly good-natured RPG if everyone chose to play the side of good? But then you'd sitll be playing "CrimeCraft".. wtf?

GrinR, I have also loooong envisioned a similar game, and I would easily pay $15/month for it.
I know WoW is good. I acknowledge that. But despite being a big fat nerd I would rather not play at all than choose between trolls, orcs, humans, or elves (especially- especially multiple kinds of elves). Just typing that makes me think of the Summoner Geeks video.
I also don't like the "roll of the dice" based gameplay. I know that is RPG tradition. But I hate having no control over the attacks (I realize I am simplifying things a bit). I played City of Heroes and after a while I got bored with waiting for my guy to attack instead of doing it myself.
I would LOVE a crime game....here would be my blueprint:
Two main "factions"- the mob or the g-men. From there it's broken up into different families or precincts, and further into classes.
Combat is real-time, but then, so is the whole game world. This allows for missions such as: After breaking into a player-controlled hideout to steal their haul from a bank job, you have to get the money back to your hideout. Should players from that family be online they might be able to chase you to initiate combat to get the money back.
The familiar classes in RPGs would be there- just changed. Weaponsmiths would be gunsmiths...or kind of like "that guy who can get you whatever you need...for a price". People who train mounts would become wheelmen. Archers into hitmen, etc etc.
Obviously there would be huge character customization, maybe even including permanent scars from fights (that could be removed for enough money). RPG stats would obviously be included but since combat is skill-based (meaning YOU have to aim the gun and click the mouse) they would influence other things...a more powerful character working for a very influential family may not even need to shoot at lower level CPU characters. They may run away on sight.
Obviously the theme would allow for very intricate betrayals and double agents, mob informers, rats, moles, etc.
All you WoW players are thinking, "I don't wanna! I don't want real-time, non-chance based combat!" That is the point. There is an audience of game players who would invest time into a game if it wasn't WoW, and I think an idea like the above could get its fingers into their wallets. I don't think it would invite "the GTA crowd" (I prefer to call them asshats, because let's face it, asshats come from all kinds of games) if it was made intelligently and encouraged sneaky team play and sophisticated strategies (what about pulling a bank job to distract the cops when your real mission is to assassinate the police chief?)
Oh well. Maybe someday...

A single player game putting you in the shoes of an undercover FBI/DEA/whatever agent having to decide just how far down the rabbit hole they wish to go could make a really, really compelling concept for an open ended game.

Well, I don't think they are making one because I haven't heard about it and I think I would. . . Plus, if they did do it, I hope they would interpret the White Wolf rules EXTREMELY loosely because I don't think tabletop rules translate well into MMORPG rules. . . especially ones that are so focused on story-telling like the White Wolf rules (great for tabletop gaming though).

There's the one I mentioned previously, "Dark Worlds" from the team behind Horizons that features "Werewolves, Vampires and 'Slayers'", which is why I called it on the unoriginal name - it's not affiliated with WoD at all despite being an obvious rip-off.
White Wolf Publishing recently (November?) merged with the developers of EVE Online, which has lead to a lot of speculation about there being a WoD Online, but there hasn't even been a sniff of an official announcement as far as I know.

It's great that everyone here had to announce their disdain for the name. Even though the name chosen might be a little foolish - which seems to be the case here - it will have little to nothing to do with the gameplay value. Something you can only speculate wildly. I'd keep my eye on this.. Id certainly love to hear more.

The problem with games that have realtime gameplay like that (as I experienced by being unfortunate enough to think that planetside would be good), is that it only works when lots of people are online.
Example: in planetside, gameplay was based around taking bases (or something, it's been a while). This could actually be kinda fun at times, if there were lots of people on. You'd fight for a while to take a base, and then you'd have to sit on that base to keep it being taken back from the people that were defending it before you ousted them. Sometimes one side would get on a roll and you'd take a bunch of bases, and you felt like you made some progress. The problem is, what happens late at night, when there aren't many people on? It boils down to going around capping bases with no real difficulty (I think there might have been some kind of AI defenses, but it was negligable), only to have other people take the base right when you moved on. This makes it so that whatever people have done during the busy hours doesn't matter, as it's all reset by what happens by the few playing late at night.
Granted, Planetside was a shitty game all around, and I'm sure it could be done better. That being said, it isn't fun to have your work completely undone when you're not around. I wouldn't like to complete a mission for a reward, only to have someone steal that reward away at 2 AM, when I'm asleep.

Wrong. The only reason they're playing the MMO you play is because it has a crop of people like you that they can daily abuse.
Case in point: The rise of Halo/Halo2 did not decrease in any way the amount of asshats in the CS community. I fear that asshats, like data, tend to expand to match whatever available volume there is.
