View Full Version : Tekken 5 Released to Playstation Store in Japan

In what's likely to be a big step for future downloadable games on consoles, Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com) is reporting that Sony has officially released Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection on their online Playstation Store in Japan. From the full report (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12225):
First hinted at in a Weekly Famitsu report in early December without a release date or price point, the PS3 version of Dark Resurrection has quietly been added to both the Japan and Hong Kong local PlayStation Stores.
Running at full HD (in up to 720p or 1080p) at a promised 60 frames per second, the new version of the 7th iteration in the long-running Tekken series makes boss character Jinpachi Mishima playable for the first time.
New, fully HD version of a well-loved fighter for only just over $15? The 830 MB download is awfully heavy, sure, but once again Sony has shown that they're serious about offering compelling downloadable content at really nice pricing. Let's hope this makes it over to North America without a big boost in the price, and let's hope we keep seeing more of this.

That's pretty damn slick. Good to see they're looking to put that 60GB HDD to good use. Now they need to get Square-Enix on board and get some HD FFXII lovin'.

Well, shiver me timbers, Sony doing something right. Bravo, that price point is nice for a relatively new game with some HD goodness. Now if they can keep this up, maybe it will pressure MS and Nintendo to change their price model for classics, which is borderline ridiculous.

Might be a good start of a cascade of gaming goodness :) Who knows, the PS3 might be the console to rule them all!

Wait. So you can buy the PSP game on the online store and play it on your PS3?
Or you can transfer it to your PSP from your PS3?
I'm ignorant. Save me.

Is it really Tekken 5?
Kefkataran
12-27-2006, 01:07 PM
Dena, Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection, if I understand it correctly, was an arcade game first (like most fighters). It got ported to the PSP and now there's a PS3 version with some new content (new playable characters and such) and fully HD graphics.
Tyrant
12-27-2006, 01:15 PM
T5: DR contains 2 new characters and some new stages. The PS3 version doesn't have any new content, save for a playable Jinpachi(probably instabanned from tourneys...) and HD resolution. Given the download size, it probably doesn't have any of the CG videos from the PSP version. It may very well be a straight up arcade port with no extras(save for playable Jinpachi).
Now for clarification, the game was released by Bandai/Namco and I don't think Sony had much of a hand in the pricing or anything else, save for maybe agreeing to put it up on the store.

Color me impressed. Tekken 5 was a lot of fun.
Except that damned Jinpachi with his firebreathing nonsense and extreme damage potential.

Tyrant, whether or not Sony had a hand in pricing, it's still a much better, more reasonable price than a lot of "lesser" content that we're seeing on both Microsoft and Nintendo's download services that seem overpriced by comparison. And Sony's already had other downloadable content for really good pricing (Lemmings).

Is it true you can't play any VC games unless you have the classic controller (or GC controller)?
My cousin was talking about VC to me and I couldn't believe it when he told me that.

I don't think that's completely, BAP. Pretty sure I've heard that the Wiimote is the number one choice for many VC titles, but just won't work with others.
EDIT: That should read "completely true, BAP."

No, that's not true. NES and most TG16 titles (and some Sega ones, I think) can use the normal Wii remote turned on its side, so it looks sort of like an old NES controller. SNES, N64, and other more complex titles require using either a classic controller or a Gamecube controller simply because there's not enough buttons on the normal Wii controller for it to work otherwise. Nintendo's online shop tells you very clearly before every purchase which controllers work with the game you're purchasing.
Gorvi
12-27-2006, 01:42 PM
It should work fine for NES games, but I think you need a GC or classic controller for anything else. I'm pretty sure it's just a button issue.
Edit : Bah, Kef beat me to it.

Great, great deal. I still see the PSP version go for $40 in some spots. Say what you will about Sony, but their pricing on downloadables is very kickass. I mean you'd have to be a big sony hater to bitch about this.

Wait, so are you giving credit to Sony for something they may or may not have priced?
$15 is a good price and Lemmings is quite reasonably priced as well, but I think said pricing is purely up to the company providing the game. For instance, I don't think MS had any say in EA charging money for cheat codes on the Marketplace, and don't recall anyone subsequently smiting MS.

No, what I'm saying is that from the point of view of a consumer looking at the two different downloadable content providers, Sony's looking a lot better right now. Now obviously Sony also has a lot less stuff on the whole compared to Microsoft, so it's still WAAAAY too early to say "OMFG, SONY WINZ DOWNLOADZ" but right now they're on a path I'm much more interested in following (whether because of Sony themselves or just the devs putting stuff up on their service) than Microsoft.
Also, Microsoft obviously had some say in EA charging for cheats. That is to say, Microsoft let them do so on their service. They okay'd it, at the least.

I'm hoping the Sony marketplace puts up some nice competition to drive Live's prices down.
How much is Lemmings, anyway? Considering how old it is, I'd hope it wouldn't be very expensive.
But Frogger and Galaga have already proved me wrong on Live (being the same cost as other new titles).
Kefkataran

Dena, believe Lemmings was released for $5.99, but included online leaderboard and a bunch of new levels/features to differentiate it from the original.

That's cool that they added new levels.
Reminds me a lot, actually, of what's happening with the old Arcade titles on Live Arcade.
Oh, well. I've paid for Contra, Frogger, and Doom multiple times now.
But, the 360 versions are by far the best.

Thanks. That's what I figured...but he said he tried it and it didn't work for Gunstar Heroes.
Anyway...I'll get to know first hand in a few days when my Wii arrives. :D
Well, at the very least I think it's nice to know that, at least for now, Sony certainly isn't making it hard to sell online software at a low price. I mean, I agree that Sony almost assuredly doesn’t set the prices, but at the same time they could do things like having a minimum price per unit or high fees for download sizes, and the prices we’re seeing certainly suggest that this isn’t the case. Being the most expensive console and so close to it’s launch nobody would have batted an eye if such a title was $30 or even $40, so it’s nice to see such competitively priced software, even if there's currently little of it. It also seems that a pretty significant precedent is being set with this pricing, it will be difficult to raise the prices substantially on online releases if they keep this up, and if Sony wanted the prices higher there’s clearly a number of ways they could force it. Anyway, this isn’t enough to ensure low prices for the future, but it seems a good sign to me.
Dena, believe Lemmings was released for $5.99, but included online leaderboard and a bunch of new levels/features to differentiate it from the original.
You are incorrect, Lemming was $2.99. Very frigging cool price and I believe it is 40 all new levels. :)
Do you have your PS3 yet? I finally got my copy of Motorstorm in today. The vehicles are much faster and the frame rate is smoother than either demo. The best way to expain it is my best time in the demo is something like 4:56. I just did my first race on the demo track and beat that time with a wreck that slowed me down. I will not get a lot of time to play it before the weekend but I like what I have seen so far. I have read it lacks features though.
Edit: I tried to download Tekken 5 from the Hong Kong store. I got as far as entering the credit card info and thinking it was going to work. Unfortunately at the last step it told me it could not authorize the CC. I read on a messge board a guy was able to do it because it does not check the address but I think he may have fibbed.

Imported a copy of Motorstorm? I'm definitely waiting for the US version so I get multiplayer. I've heard there's basically nothing but a straight racing mode in the Japan release. Hopefully the US one will get a bit more (in addition to multi), but even just multi will be nice if it's implemented well.
And, no, my buddy's got the PS3, I'll be picking it up when I'm back in my hometown next week. I'll let you know so we can fight noobz on Resistance.

It is as easy as setting up another region login for the Xbox360 pre media downloads. I am not sure how billing would work though, that is if you have a Japanese account you might have to have Japanese billing information. I've been stuck trying to figure out how to get flash 9 to work on the PPC version of YDL 5.0 once (if?) I figure that out I'll reboot into the game os and see if my Visa works and if not maybe a Diners International since it is tied to a Govt. account and no physical address.
As far as the region lock goes it unfortunantly exists but like the Xbox360 it is at the software level rather than some silly easily removed bios check for the optical media, or easily sandpapered/removable rails for the old cartridges. NCSX has notes on the software regarding where or if it is region locked.
Kefkataran
12-27-2006, 08:44 PM
Really? I could've sworn Sony had said no region locking at all, but I guess it make senses that it exists at the software level and is up to the devs, since that seems to be a theme Sony's trying to go for.
Let us know if you figure out if the download works.

Really good to see some good, decently priced games coming out on PS3. I hope Tekken 5: DR comes out in the US; I'll get that one right away.
Just want to point that I think, and am pretty sure its the case, that while the games these downloads come from are not from the console makers all the time, does not mean that they don't have a hand in the pricing of said content. I bet Microsoft has a standard price structure for live an arcade titles, as well as providing standard to developers on what kinds and what prices it suggests for other game content. Nintendo has standard prices for each kind of console a game comes from on VC (SNES - 800 points [$8], N64 - 1000 points [$10]).

The link above's directions work perfectly, and I am downloading it as I type. However, I am very disturbed at the lack of verification done on the CC through the Sony HK store. You put in a make believe address and yet the CC charges go right through no questions asked. So make sure if you do this method to delete any personal info and format your drive if you swap out the harddrive or return it to the store. Especially with all the linux builds out it is only a matter of time before the game-os is exposed and that info is equally exposed.
When it is done downloading I'll post what audio modes it supports since we allready know the video supported.

Yes, I do believe Sony does not have a direct hand in pricing of 3rd party goods in their store. If there is any involvement at all, it likely has more to do with the prices of their own downloads, which may influence the decision of a publisher's price. I doubt Sony or any other company for that matter would be against the idea of potentially making more money if people are willing to pay higher prices for goods. Assuming that they get a percentage of the sale anyway. Someone needs to test the waters as it were with this gosh darned new fangled console game digital download business.

Played it for about an hour with Jin, and it has a nice smooth framerate, 5.1 and tons of unlockable content. You seem to get 3k gold every victory and most purchasable stuff (original arcade intro, concept art, etc) seems to be in the 50k plus range. The demo won't impress the jaded or the synical since it isn't that much of a leap from Tekken 5/4/Tag, but for someone who has never played the PSP version due to not wanting to update the firmware this is a great deal for $16.09.
