With the day nearing a close, I figure it would be best to announce the games that were released for the biggest Holiday of the year (In America, at least.).
Today, Nintendo brings us a total of 5 games this morning:
Super Mario Bros. (500 points, NES)
ToeJam & Earl (800 points, Genesis)
R-Type (800 points, TurboGrafx-16)
Super Castlevania IV (800 points, SNES)
Street Fighter II (800 points, SNES)

I've surprisingly had a lot of fun playing the original Mario Bros. on the Virtual Console with my cousins over break. I can't remember the last time I'd laughed so hard while playing an NES game.
I fucking hate those pink crabs though. Somehow, I always have this idea that I can outrun them, but that's definitely never the case. :(

Wiirtual??
Yeah, the whole "replacing prefixes with Wii" is getting real old, real fast. "Wiimote" has been the only one that actually works.

Pink??? This is why I hate that they don't have the arcade versions of these games....they are supposed to be red.
Sorry...this is one of my favorite games growing up...the arcade version. Glad you are enjoying it...it's an awesome game.

Also, Mario's mustache is supposed to be a slightly different shade of black. I mean c'mon, do they think we won't notice?!?!?!

A buddy of mine came over last night. We downloaded Toejam and Earl in under a few minutes and played that for little over an hour. Just as goofy as I remember it, a good coop exploration game.Actually pretty surprissed how well it translated on a WS HD tv.

Is the Space Pope reptillian?
I picked up Super Castlevania IV and it's pretty freakin' sweet. My personal favorite, Castlevania 3 is still out there (pirates!), but soon enough, I hope. I've never checked out Toejam & Earl -- maybe I'll pick that up before too long.

No N64 party games even over the holidays....
Quite disappointing.

I hadn't played R-Type before, and I read a review before I did that explained just how brutal it really is. Now that I own it, the sheer evilness of its design even in the first level is incredible.
Before you go into the very first little pathway a little walker-bot appears on the left side of the screen. You can't kill it because it's behind you, and its sole purpose is to fire a single shot as you move through the tunnel. That's evil.
I hope I can get good at it!

The thing to remember about RType is that stuff from behind is able to be dealt with, this is more apparent in RType Final than anywhere. Your bit or whatever can protect your ass and shoot behind you as well.

So, is preferring the arcade version over console too hardcore for a hardcore gaming site? Too hardcore for "hardscore"?

You are tripping out, man. I'm sure they actually are red and his TV was just too bright, or something.
And, yes, we are way too hardcore for "hardscore."
EDIT: The later levels were cooler in the Arcade version (Vs. Super Mario Bros), I give you that.

Her. Her TV was too bright. :p
And, yes, the TV was pretty freakin' bright.

I can't justify the mario games because I still have my SNES readily available at my home. When I'm up at college, I'll probably be picking a few up, definently World.
Is Gunstar Heroes a good solo game? It's the one I'm REALLY interested in right now...

SO GOOD.
It's Treasure, so expect relentless action and insane moments and set pieces. It's the kind of game where they give you to start the kind of gun that other games would give you at level 5 and then they set you loose on the world and the world is set loose on you. The boss battles are crazy and the whole game is hilarious and frenetic and so much fun.

I remember playing Mario Bros. on Atari with my brothers, then again in the mini-battle in SMB 3. Now I get to do it yet again, and you're right. The laughter just never stops. :D

Nintendo got this part right. They release Classic arcade/console games...not just old ones. I was hoping the 360 would release more of these type of games (I'm looking at you Strider/ classic Genesis Shadowrun) for its Live offerings. Price them at $5 a pop and rake in the dough! Offer up leaderboards and resurrct that true Arcade feeling again.
...but who can argue with Feeding Frenzy on Live. >cough<
