Straight from the horse's mouth at GamesIndustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=9054) :
The version of Square Enix' massively multiplayer title Final Fantasy XI which was announced with a fanfare for Xbox 360 earlier this week will not feature any major enhancements over the existing PS2 and PC versions of the game, representatives of the firm have confirmed.
Is it just me, or are all fans of the new consoles getting the shaft one way or another?

We're not talking about Valve here in case you didn't notice. Square isn't going to waste time scrambling to add new features to a game that's been out since October 2003. I mean, they didn't even bother to change very much when they ported it to the PC, so why would anyone think they'd be willing to change things aroud now given all of the titles that they're currently working on?

Just my 52 cents worth.

It's beyond me as to why anyone would want to play FFXI anyhow... Compared to other modern MMO's, it's just pure crap, undeniably.

Got to agree with that. FFXI can't compare to any of the 3 newer MMOs. Its a pretty crapy game and doesn't deserve a port here but if square wants to spend the money who is microsoft to turn them away? The question is though will it have voice chat or keyboard?

*Edited because I didn't read the post right*

I'd think that the Xbox Live network would support voice comm. channels for individual games even if they aren't fully supported by the developer. Surely Microsoft has addressed this already and I just managed to miss it.

Or maybe not.

My experience with FFXI went something like this

Yay! My new game is here!
-Three hours later-
Well that was a huge pain in the ass... anyway, lets play. I love MMOs! Mmm, this game rocks. It is too hard though. And the advancement sure is a grind. I wish someone could explain the whole multiclassing system to me. Hello clone number 96. Yeah I'm fine. Yawn... I'm gonna go explore a bit. Explore, ya know, the internet and read about EQII and WoW - because the bloom was off this rose an hour ago.

No enhancements? Why not just release it on Xbox 1, a platform with a huge installed base???

Idiotic. Looked like during their presentation that it had been given a once over to be on par graphically with the rest of the 360 stuff but I guess not. If that had been the case and they'd removed the monthly fees I would have gone for it and it could have been a really big hit. As is why would you buy it if you know anything about gaming and that you can get it for like $15 on PC.

While I think it's good Square are finally on board with the 360, I really hope we see more and better MMORGS. From what I saw of them, something like City of heroes and Guild Wars would port over to console MMORPGing quite well.

If only True Fantasy Online hadn't been cancelled.

SquareEnix putting out games on XB360 = Good.
Porting FFXI = WTF.

A sub-par, two year old MMO coming to XB360 contributes very little to the system, imho. That would be akin to saying SW Galaxies was coming to the PS3. Sheesh.

I imagine it will be like the everquest model where you will see new expansion packs that may include graphical and engine updates that will not run on lower specced platforms (eg. ps2, low-end pcs), and you will basically need a 360 or high end pc to play them. Obviously in this case you wouldn't actually see a ps2 version made. Ps2 players would still be able to play the game but they would be restricted to areas available in the original version.

Either way I think its a good start for 360.

Having played WoW and EQ2, I went back to FFXI (although I still play WoW). While WoW is good, it's got issues, and Square has made a lot of improvements to XI in the last 6 months.

I guess this is probably for the Japanese market. FFXI is pretty big there and more or less the only MMORPG that Japanese play (no WoW yet and of course some Korean games... but you know.. they are Korean :)

Well, FFXI is a pretty good game... for the PS2. Ok on PC but as soon as you start comparing the gameplay to other MMOs out on the market you find that there is NO comparison. FFXI is a Japanese-centric MMORPG that is fun until about Level 45-60 (Depends on the person really). But sooner or later you begin to realize the reality that hitting level 62 only means that your HALFWAY to the level cap of 75 =\. Not only that, try farming notorious monsters with Japanese players... you WILL NOT get the mob first. It's called LLAAAGGG, there are NO US servers and it will most likely not change when it hits Xbox 360. The packs of chinese gold farmers still love the game too much too, so getting any decent gil is very difficult.

I enjoyed the game for the most part when I played it, but releasing FFXI on Xbox 360 is really just stupid, it WILL bomb. Microsoft should have convinced SE to update it or something, at least graphically. Pretty sad that SE isn't do the same ol' same ol' and MS is just keeping their mouth shut because they will do anything to hop in bed with SE.

If only True Fantasy Online hadn't been cancelled.

Acctually a couple of months ago whoever has the rights to it announced that work had begun on it again, but it was going to be multiplatform with the slightest hint that they may not include XBox.
