Arkane Studios (http://www.arkane-studios.com/en/index.php), makers of Dark Messiah, is currently working on The Crossing, a new FPS that combines singleplayer and multiplayer into CROSSPLAYER! There's a short teaser video available at Gamevideos (http://gamevideos.com/)

This could be cool. It sounds like it's going to be something like Guild Wars where you can do those missions alone or with buddies.

Wow, i'm amazed.

I would have figured that, by default, they would be working on Dark Messiah 2.

That said, the concept looks very, very interesting. Let's hope they can pull it off.

I'm glad they're not working on DM2, DM2 was a disappointment. Waste of a franchise is what it was.

Thinking back to it, I'm not even sure why it was so disappointing. I think maybe because it was sort of a jack of all trades game where it didn't ace any one of the other genres it pulled game mechanics from.

Crossplayer?
So you mean like Titan Quest, where you can start an online single player game and as you play other PEOPLE can come and go at will with the difficulty scaling automaticlaly?

Okay, yay. FPS with that? Interesting. "Redefining"? No.

So I get flashbacks of Diablo and Diablo II...the real classic online by-yourself or with-others online play.

May be interesting as an FPS, color me excited because I love FPSes :D

Edit: It's just too bad that trailer blows.

When I first heard of this I thought of something like your playing the single player and all of a sudden someone hops in as one of the bad guys somewhere in the level.

Is it just me or did that level look like Shibuya Station from Jet Set Radio?

Im not buying more games for Arkane, they dont care for the Dark Messiah users, no SDK for mod development, no multiplayer patches to fix the totally unbalanced classes.

They look like a small studio with no time to support their games after launch

So, expect the same in this new game.

Crossplayer? Is that a new term for people who cos-play as anime characters of the opposite gender? :D Hard to say where this is headed, from the teaser it looks a bit too much like an uber-counterstrike clone at this point.

Also, naming a game after a gameplay gimmick just seems like a bad idea. It's like making a game called "Nonlinearity," or "Ragdoll," or "The Emergence."

And Christ, fix the news link already. One of these days, somebody's going to link to goatse in a news post and the mods'll approve it without noticing.

Yeah? WTF ? I still don't get what the excitement or "never done before" aspect of it is...

I think the reason is that the trailer doesn't really explain what the "never done before" aspect is. Sure, you know it's some kind of single player/multiplayer hybrid but supposedly it's going to be featured in next week's 1up show in enough detail to explain what they're hinting at.

did anyone else read this with a slight faint hope that this would be about something the same as counter-op mode for perfect dark zero? Where one player plays the good guy, single player, but other players can warp in and play bad guys with really low health to make super smart AI?

:/

If you want an SDK for the source engine look Here (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SDK_Docs)

DMM wasn't a BAD game just a shitty use of a license.
I had mindless fun playing it.Not what I was looking for but it was fun.( very very lather, rinse, repeat fun but still)
This will be a wait and see for me.

I'm guessing that this game is going to connect to servers on certain levels and other players will help or hinder you in the game. Concept is ambitious, and already I have doubt they can pull it off because other people are notoriously uncooperative. (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/04/21)

a SDK for DM is to be released, and Arkane didn't do the multiplayer of DM, so no need to blame Arkane for that. Also Arkane cares for the players, you can trust that ;)

1up just posted an interview with the developers which explains how the game will work, but it all seems very complicated.

The story involves multiple dimensions colliding, which explains how players can take the place of AI enemies in the story mode. I think there's some kind of possession element too like agent smith in the matrix, the whole thing is really confusing to me right now.

From what I gather, you'll be playing the game like a normal FPS: deathmatch, CTF, etc. You get a messsage that someone is about to play a story mode mission and then people can queue up to play as the bad guys. It sort of sounds like the kinds of horde vs alliance stuff you get with raid bosses that don't spawn in instances.

You could always make a new thread or submit this as news, rather than bumping a month-old thread.

Thanks for the link, though.
