View Full Version : Weekend Gamer: What are you playing?

Christmas Weekend! For some lucky people, they will have the week off between Christmas and New Years. Lots of games to be played! Hopefully, new ones as well. This weekend is shot on game playing since there is many things to do with my family over the next four days. Which means - very little game playing. What games will you try to squeeze in between all the get togethers, or are you lucky that you have time to play?

And other Wii games.

Resistance online for now and Motorstorm if my copy ever gets here. I knew I should have paid extra for shipping. On the 360 I will probably crack open Viva Pinata and the PSP will get a little loving with Killzone

Also gonna download the Razor and play some Oblivion again. Oh, and Metalslug on the Wii, if I can get Gunnymo to come over for some hot, two-way Wii action!

A 360 for me finally! All I've got right now is Dead Rising, but that combined with checking out the new X-Box Live stuff should be plenty. Good timing too since I'm at the last boss with Neverwinter 2.

Well, after Sunday I'll probably be playing GoW, R6: Vegas, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Metal Slug Anthology, and DBZ (whatever the hell the Wii game is called). Until then... I'll be doing nothing, just like this whole week. I might pick up Summon Night: Swordcraft Story at Gamestop if I go by there for Christmas shopping, don't know if I will though. If not, I'll go get it and it's sequel sometime after Christmas.

I've been working on a blog with a friend, the link is in my sig: www.geekshideout.com Check it out sometime, see if you like it... we're making plans to attempt getting some exclusive content, but that will be later on.

Hey!

What do you think of Dragon Ball Z for Wii? I love playing it with friends, but didn't care for the single-player story mode. I downloaded a save file with all the characters unlocked from WiiSaves.com.

I loved the first Summon Night on the GBA. Is the sequel any good?

BTW: The Wii menu for Dragonball Z is hysterical.

I'll tell you sometime after Sunday, when I receive it :p

Dunno, gonna try to buy the first one today or tomorrow, and failing that I'll buy both sometime next week. Assuming the single copy they have of the first one is still at Gamestop, with my luck someone probably came by and bought it.

I'll be dinking around with my Wii intarweb and doing some drunken multiplayer Wii Sports with the guys.

I have to work Christmas and Boxing Day (boo) but I'm going to be getting in a lot of DS love this weekend while at the in-laws.

Very deep into FFV Advance, almost to the exclusion of everything else.

When I can tear myself away from FFV:A, I will be working on Phoenix Wright 2, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and maybe some Metroid Pinball.

When I'm back home (all alone :( ) for work, I'm likely going to be playing some Company of Heroes, WoW or Oblivion on the PC and either Splinter Cell: Double Agent or FFXII on the consoles.

And amongst all of this, I'll be fondling the Wiimote I picked up this week and dreaming of actually using it on a Wii. I figured I'd make sure I have a second Wiimote when I eventually get a Wii.

I'm tempted to take the Wiimote into the local EB and just play their demo unit with my own Wiimote, but I'm afraid they'll think I'm stealing the thing!

Going home for the holiday, not gaming at all. I might bring a book, but I doubt it. If I have to read or game when visiting my family, why even show up? I think that's pretty shallow of a son to plug himself into a different world when spending time with the family.

Anyway, probably no games this weekend. I don't have next week off, either. I also didn't ask for games for Xmas...it's hard to ask for things (i.e. waiting until Xmas to open them) when you're an adult and have a job and can buy them here and now.

Still, happy holidays everyone!

My family likes playing Wii Sports. Instead of using games to escape, you could try using gaming to bring people together.

Friends and family have been gaming together since before recorded history. Even today, people go bowling together, play poker, dominoes, Monopoly, etc.

Only recently has gaming turned into a solitary event.

My brand new, 50" Samsung DLP HDTV showed up right as the family was getting ready to head out of town for the holidays. I was told it was going to take 2-6 weeks to be delivered and in arrived 8 days after I ordered it! Arrgh!

So now I'm stuck with a whole week of the Gamecube on a 27", 20 year old Magnavox. Can't wait!

Well, I bring a pile of stuff with me when I go home to visit my folks. I guess if you are only going to be visiting for a night it is one thing, but my parents live over 600 miles away, so I tend to visit for around 5-6 days and they always have other things to do.

Plus, admittedly, my parents aren't exactly expert conversationalists. I'm lucky to get 5 minutes of discussion out of any topic with my father and if it isn't family gossip, my mom really isn't engaged by it. Also I need to cart around all my electronic toys to friends houses. Hell, I even borrow my brothers' DS systems when I go out bar hopping with my friends. That might sound pretty geeky, but I only get to see them a few times a year and it's the only time I really get any gaming with friends in.

I think I'll play a little Diablo 2 and maybe some Viva.

I definitely bring books and games home with me...I stay up much later than the rest of my family so it gives me something to do at night. Plus, my dad watches a lot of TV later in the day (and I watch basically no TV), so I'll just sit in the living room with him and play some computer games or surf EvAv on the laptop while bullshitting with him.

I understand. I live perhaps a half hour away from my parents, so I'm lucky. They still inhabit the town where I grew up, and it's pretty much the boonies. It's not like there's a lot of catching up to do with my folks, and there's certainly little to do in the area, but I find gaming to be the least of my thoughts while visiting them (unless I receive a system or a game for Xmas and want to rush back to my place to pop it in). And, I'm only there for a day or two.

Plus, I game too much in my own home...any outside gaming feels like overkill, like I'm a smoker that can't go a few hours without a cigarette. And, as if it's any surprise, I'm the entertainment when I go back to the boonies, so I have to keep the jokes, innuendo, and antics going strong or else people get bored. That's hard work!

Wait, you take your DS when you go bar-hopping!? Good God, if you ever tried to initiate a game of Children of Mana while we were slamming some Guinness back, I'd tell you to get your own ride home.

Well, in my defense, it is generally for after the bars when we land at someone's house/apartment. But there have been a few times when we were out at local bars on slow nights where we kicked back with some drunken Tetris competitions. One of the Irish pubs we go to frequently even has a Wifi connection to play online.

Also you'd be surprised how many girls come up and ask you what you are doing when you are playing Tetris DS at a bar. I cruely sometimes think it is because they know you aren't paying attention to them. I have even had a few ask me if they could play when they find out I have Tetris. If you dont' look or talk like a complete tool, you can get away with gaming in public and not look like a social reject. This isn't the 1980's anymore, man.

I always stay at the in-laws when I'm 'home' for Christmas/Thanksgiving/whatever random holiday I'm not at my own home for.

I bring my DS (or PS2 or whatever) to help kill the crushing boredom. I tend to hang out with my buddy the first night I'm home but afterwards I tend to have nothing to do except hang around the in-laws while my wife visits with her family. YAWN. I might swing over to my parents place for a bit during my stay, but for the most part it's just me, trapped at the in-laws. Now, my kid keeps me busy but whenever he's sleeping or out with mom, I need something to keep me awake.

Now, to help break me out of the selfish loner videogame funk I'm in right now, I'm going to go help my parents hand out Christmas hampers at the church tomorrow. That'll be different!

I hear ya on the Freezepop. I loved Less Talk More Rokk so much that I ordered the single from the band. It's got a funny little bonus track of the band playing Guitar Hero and trying to play their own song.

I was able to finish the "Buy all the Wii accessories" game last night. The EB near my in-laws' house had about 4-5 nunchucks and a classic controller, so now I'm all set for when I finally get my hands on a Wii. I almost picked up some of the component cables but I figured I'd wait. Should I wait for the official ones or are the cheapo MadCatz ones decent enough? I don't want to spend a zillion dollars on component cables if there's no reason to. I'm happy with the Madcatz ones I picked up for my PS2 and Xbox...

Viva Pinata (if I can get my girlfriend to stop).

How is that? I see Best Buy has it for $30 right now.

:( Damn. Yeah, those Dell LCD's are fucking amazing, especially the one you've got. How did you afford such a monster? You should pair it with an 8800 GTX so you can put on 8x AA without any hitches.

Dell had two stackable coupons available so I was able to knock the price down $400. I'm a software developer by trade and I do a lot of work out of the house so this is a business expense for me.

A couple of 8800's would be insane...I'd have to wait a while but something like that would kick ass. Finally get smooth frame rates in 3D Mark 06.

Buggy or not, I'll be playing Star Trek: Legacy. Yea, the bugs are really annoying, but I want to believe that the game has a chance.

I'll also be playing BF2142 -- I received a 'free trial' from EA that expires Christmas night -- but so far on the 4 servers I've played on (totaling 20 minutes of play time), I've had 3 CTDs, and a Master Server Disconnect (all titan mode servers).

I just picked up Enchanted Arms, so I'm going to see how much I suffer through it. Cheap used, and if I don't like it I'll just take it back and get a different game. Family owned game business, so purchasing mistakes are usually no biggie. Plus I've been in the mood for a JRPG lately. Blue Dragon being due in June is just too far away.

Phantasy Star II...I still haven't beat this game, but I'm feeling like this might be the time. I'll be splitting that between Zelda, Castlevania:PoR (this game is tight); SotN, perhaps start into some Final Fantasy XII...maybe some guitar heroes II, if only to listen to some Freezepop.

Despite trying many times, I've never beaten PS2 either. I keep getting fed up of the maze dungeons and stupidly high random encounter rate Last time I sat down with walkthroughs up the wazoo, but still put it down because every other 3 seconds was a monster fight.

Well, in my defense, it is generally for after the bars when we land at someone's house/apartment.

I have to back him up on this one. After many agrravating nights of standing in line to get into the bar/pub/club, for upwards of 3 hours, on occasion, I smartened up and bring my DS lite with me everywhere. I use it to quickly pass the time I would otherwise spend just waiting, (in line, waiting for dinner at a restaurant, in the car, etc). All my friends understand, especially becuase I have ADD, its tough for me to sit and do nothing.

Not to replace real human interaction, but to speed up waiting and downtime, portable gaming is a godsend.

Excite Truck for me. Been playing it all day and unlocking as much stuff as I can. Plus it's so addictive that I don't mind playing the same races over and over again :D

Aside from that... Wii Zelda, Enchanted Arms, Psychonauts (just to see what the fuss is about), Beyond Good & Evil (ditto), and Wii Trauma Center.

Lots of catching up to do :)

You bastard. You were suppose to be farming fudgehogs by now. Let me know how Enchanted Arms is, though. I might have to toss it on my Gamefly queue. Aren't you still in the middle of Final Fantasy XII too? It sounds like you have a bad case of gamer ADD. :p

I want to make good use of my 360. I've been trying to grab games I've missed over the past year, and I'm finding many of them fun even if they aren't top tier. That's the thing the 360 is missing, more uber caliber games. You have a bunch of good ones, though.

Enchanted Arms is...well, once I beat it I'm taking it back down to the store and trading it towards something else. The battles haven't been very involving right now, as I just hit "Auto Battle" and the game plays for me unless it's a boss fight. It's pretty ridiculous actually. I seem to remember Gabe from Penny Arcade talking about how great Enchanted Arms was, but then they went ahead and made fun of Final Fantasy XII as being a game that you watch, not play. I find it somewhat ironic; FFXII is 10x more playable than EA is thus far.

But yeah, I have Okami and FFXII still going--I do get sidetracked a bunch these days. I started Bully, which I found to be a fine game, but a bug happened and erased hours of progress. So I never picked it back up...I will though. This upcoming drought will allow me to catch up on games. I just wish more 360 titles that are nearly a year old would get down to the 19.99 mark. Then I'd be more willing to buy them.

And the funny thing is, I think the achievements in 360 games make me keep playing them. They seem to be more worth my time. I beat FEAR last weekend and I even went out of my way for a few achievements. It's not to increase my gamerscore or whatever, but more for my own personal accomplishments. When I pick up a 360 game, I damn well know I'm going to get my mileage out of it because those achievements are like a carrot before my eyes. They're a set of goals that are just plain fun to achieve. Like collecting all the stars in Mario 64, or killing the Weapons walking around in Final Fantasy VII. I've warmed up to achievements, even though I still think people that play bad games just to get easy achievements are foolish as all shit.

I have been giving Viva Pinata another chance. Dam time flys when plaing that game.
I sunk 8 hrs into it last night. I was only planning on playing a little bit.

I now see why so many people picked it as game of the year for the 360.
I think I would still pick ChromeHounds or Oblivion over it, but VP does kick a$$.

I don't care if it is a kids game I like it.
Their filled with fun Mother F...er!

Oh, man, so much good gaming going on over the holidays for everyone. :) Love to see that.

Me, I'll be hitting up a lot of Twilight Princess, some Bully, and hopefully some Final Fantasy XII also. I'll be purchasing Super Mario Bros when it's released on the VC tomorrow too.

In addition to the gaming, I'll be reading a ton of comics and Dave Eggers's new book, What is the What. What a great damned Christmas. Happy holidays, all!

Bah. I'm stuck in Phoenix Wright 2. Two days of trying to figure out what piece of evidence to present to proceed in this trial is pissing me off. Castlevania, here I come.

kelegacy, I agree with you. Normally I would not play a game again after I finished it. But achievements keep me playing. My gf and I just started up GOW again on hardcore today to get more achievements. She loves Viva Pinata also.

Excite Truck, Wii Sports with family, and Zelda TP. I also just got Elite Beat Agents for my birthday (today) and it rocks! May need to send my Santa Mii to a couple of people as well.

I can understand fully why someone would buy the 360 version over the PS3 version of a cross-platform title; all things equal, get the version that raises your overall score. Whoever thought up achievements at Microsoft should be given a freaking medal. It is such a brilliant and simple idea.
