El Reg has an article (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/05/19/goldman_sachs_on_xbox_360_pricing/)stating that the initial price of the 360 might be a bit more than previously expected.
Goldman Sachs expects Microsoft will move approximately 3 million Xbox 360 units in the December quarter, "with demand exceeding supply". Goldman noted that the console could be sold at a retail price that is more than it had expected.
No supply? Here we go again...

I thought price jacking could only happen on ebay.

so does this mean $400 price tag?
as much as I enjoy buying systems on or near launch, that might be a bit too expensive for me

Here's something to consider, the original xbox sold for $299 and around $450 in Canada (Canadian dollars). If the xbox 360 sells for, say, $360 that works out to... around $454 in Canada, just a few dollars more than the xbox. The U.S. dollar has dropped in value that much over the past few years.

But those fucking bastards still mark up the prices as if the canadian dollar was still horrible. Games are still bank breaker.

Does this really suprise anyone? There is no way that either Sony or MS will be able to continue selling new hardware at that magical $299 price point with technology moving as fast as it is. I think we'll start seeing the new starting price AT LEAST $400, if not more. Nintendo will probably be able to keep theirs at a much lower price because they aren't going for an all in one type machine. But I think our days of $299 for new hardware is over, unless they all plan on continuing to eat the difference of selling their consoles for hundreds less than they cost to make.

Ya, and it's impossible to sell somthing like the PSP For under $300, if I remember correctly.

since this is an analyst with no information thats not already available on the web I'm inclined to be skeptical till microsoft tells us something. They also said the first xbox would be a 5-600$ console and look how wrong they were there.

I won't be getting the system at launch. Won't be getting one until modchips come out for it. I don't trust MS to put some nazi DRM rights management on it. I have my xbox setup as a media center and the xbox360 will be an upgraded form of that for me once modchips come out for it.

Where is everyone's cuttoff point? $300 $400 $500 ??? They will only get more expensive but sooner or later they will reach a point where people will just not pay that much money for something that only lasts 2-4 years.

I will not pay $400 or more for any console currently on the horizon, and I would feel cheated for paying more than $350.
I estimate the prices will be between $300 and $350.
umm, guys... they said it will be around 30$ more than they expected. Thats really not such a HUGE difference.

Didn't we pay around 400 bucks for the PS2 when it first came out? Or am I remembering that wrong? I remember using my tax return and my wife being

Computer technology has been moving at this pace for 60 years (i.e. since the first computer), and game technology has been moving at this pace for more than 25 years.
The "magic" price point has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with how much people are willing to spend for entertainment.
I definitely see price increases this generation. Adjusted for inflation (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/) the NES or PS1 would retail for around $380 today. That seems reasonable. Anything higher and I think gamers won't be buying.

I'd be surprised if the 360 has an MSRP higher than $300. That doesn't mean people won't be selling tham for $500 on eBay, and retailers may force you to buy "value packs" if you want the system, but there is always a lack of systems the first 4-6 months. I just can't see the system, as is, being successful if sold for more than $300

Nah, the PS2 was $300. We also used our tax return to buy one. Though my wife was cool with it, since we didn't have a dvd player at the time. And if they start releasing BD stuff, that may just be a way to leverage the PS3 into our place too. Though if it's much more than $300, that's gonna be a hard sell.

It's there way of say "look at me sony i'm close to makeing money on my console. :p "
With no one else haveing there next gen console out they can set the market price.
Then when they are ready to come out, they will drop the price.
Guess it's going to come down to who has deeper pockets. :D

I'm going to wait for the PS3 as well. But, while I'm waiting, I'll be playing my shiny new Xbox 360.

That price is just a place holder. It is normal for companies to post an early price that is definitely higher than what they believe the final price will be. That way, they can start to gather pre orders and no one will be pissed off if the price changes, as it will most certainly go down and not up.

Canadian dollars? Who cares? Ship all units to US stores first, include Canada later.

Like that would stop us. I could easily just cross the border and grab one then anyways.
BTW, you may have noticed EA has a high number of Canadians on here, hence why there's lots of posts mentioning our prices.

I would pay $500 for a system that will potentially be able to do everything potentially the 360 will be able to do. A $500 computer wouldn't be able to do this stuff.

Keep one thing in mind with all of these analysts. If you remember they said that the PSP would be at least $500, maybe as much as $700 whan it actuallr dropped for $250. Similar thing were said about the X-Box, PS2, GBA, etc. These analysts may be good in other fields, they have a very spotty record when it comes to video game consoles.
My predictions, (assuming there will be only one version of each console)
X-Box 360 - $300
PS3 - $350
Revolution - $200-$250
I have no inside info, these are just my guesses.
I'm guessing the Revolution will be under $200. If it's only twice as powerful as a gamecube then I don't know why it would cost more than two gamecubes.

Your numbers are pretty much what I'd guess as well. I just don't see MS pricing their console above $300 if they expect to even have a chance of becoming #1. It aslo makes sense that the PS3 should be more expensive with its Blu-Ray drive and apparently more powerful specs. It seems like Microsoft HAS to keep their system cheaper because of the Blue-Ray drive if nothing else.

Except that Microsoft has at least a 6 month window where there's no real competition, so they can price it however they want during that time frame, and then promptly drop the price when the PS3 launches. Maybe throw in Halo 3 as well? <hint> packing in games again would be awesome </hint>

My guess is MSRP of $300, but you won't find any that aren't part of a $400+ bundle until close to the PS3 launch.

Or they could keep it low that whole time and get a larger installment base.

I hope MS takes the same loss on the 360 hardware as they did on the Xbox. Because then H&E would continue losing money until the 720, whatever the install base.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If they price it "however they want" simply because they're first, they'll end up like the $400 Saturn launch and completely waste their head start.
