From The Revolution Lifestyle (http://theboard.zogdog.com/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=11&) :
The Wii Remote and its creation is a subject that interests many, and in the past we've been able to take a look at early prototypes and patent images, which have managed to shed a little light on exactly how Nintendo's killer controller came to be.

The Nikkei Business magazine in Japan has apparently published an image (http://www.aussie-nintendo.com/images/NEWS/wii_controller_prototypes.jpg) depicting four previously unseen controllers, and a couple of them are quite similar to the final product. One of them is downright crazy, though.

What bothers me the most about that Star controller is that it already looks beat up and worn around the edge. WTF.

Proof that Nintendo is a meth lab posing as a game developer.

With that star controller in the line-up, how could they possibly go with the final version?

I think having that controller in your apartment would pretty guarantee that you were never going to get laid.

All that star controller needs is a sign above the star reading "DON'T PUSH".

It looks all beat up because the paint on the Nerf(tm) foam surrounding it is starting to flake off. Nintendo foresaw the Wii injuries, and HAD taken steps to insure the safety of its gamers.. but in the end decided that having the chance to laugh at idiots that smash their TV's/walls/equipment/spouses was too good to pass up. Even if it did cost them millions, and a class action lawsuit. Personally.. I'm happy with he direction they went.

That twistable black one looks the business.

Shades of Namco's twisty PS1 controller (NegCon was it?)....

Still - I'm happy with what they brought out...

Presumably they all featured some kind of motion sensing. Fascinating really.

They forgot to show the motion sensing dildo-shaped one.

Hey, does the Wii controller have vibration?

Speaking of nerf, we decided at work the other day that if Nerf started to make Wii controllers ( similar to their PS2 controllers out on the market), this whole "my wrist strap broke and my wii remote broke my tv" nonsense would cease. It's genius! GENIUS!

What bothers me the most about that Star controller is that it already looks beat up and worn around the edge. WTF.

When controllers are usually first starting to be developed, they focus on the feel of the controller. And when they're doing this they'll come up with an idea, and have a mockup of the controller carved from an otherwise soft material, like hard foams or wood.

I do not believe this "controller" was functional in any way at all.

1997 called, they want their leet speak back.

How does one use the star controller

This particular controller also featured a three foot long wooden pole that you just shove up your ass. Then you'd sit on the star controller and spin yourself for hours.

I would'nt call it "leet speak" as much as i would call it "yahoo chat room speak".

And I don't think 1997 is capable of using a telephone... I think you're just making that one up and trying to fool me.

The star controller is clearly made in collaboration with Nerf - I bet the gameplay involved tossing the bad boy around the house! Maybe this would decrease the number of broken TVs?
