Gamespot has posted a preview (http://www.gamespot.com/mobile/action/doomrpg/preview_6125669.html) of id Software's upcoming mobile handheld title, DOOM RPG.

id Software's Doom all but invented the PC first-person shooter genre. After posting on his blog, detailing his foray into J2ME programming, John Carmack has begun work on a Doom RPG. Just a few weeks into coding, the game is looking excellent. Carmack has repurposed the original Doom sprites and UI, crafting a sizable RPG, the plot of which expounds on those of the three FPS Dooms. Weapons and monsters from the entire trilogy have been included, and each monster is vulnerable to a specific weapon. Doom RPG plays a lot like its realtime predecessors, minus the fast-twitch gameplay. Set to launch in October, in conjunction with the film, Doom RPG should be playable by anyone who's bought a handset within the past year.

For a developer this is actually a good thing to do... there is a tendency for developers who only work on one type of project to think rather narrowly. No matter how good you are, after working on the same type of project over and over again you will get tunnel vision and ignore obvious solutions. Judging from Carmack's comments on the RPG in the past, I would say he's just taking a breather from doing desktop engines over and over and over and over and over and over again.

That's pretty much what he said in his Blog.

Yeah, going a bit off topic Pragmatic Programmer and the likes expouse the idea quite a great deal.

Carmack started programming on phones for fun, probably decided why not get paid for it?

Hah, I get to be the first one to make a joke about it being a RPG where every battle is a back attack.
